To want to sit my own living room of an evening?

FiloPastri · 18/01/2023 19:15

I wfh, in the bedroom, as DH and I live in a small flat.
He goes out to work 4 days a week and when he comes home he likes to sit in the (small) living room on his laptop listening to YouTube videos.
I want to watch tv in the living room, however, I can't hear it over his bloody videos on his laptop.

He thinks this is perfectly reasonable and I should go and watch tv in the bedroom (which I've been working in all day.)

We do have other hobbies and things we do in the evening but it would be nice to be able to watch tv in my own living room in the evening every now and then. Aibu?

He has no excuse for not wearing headphones. There are plenty of options to choose from and he is what’s annoying.

Benjispruce4 · 18/01/2023 21:17

How can headphones be annoying? You can get lovely cushioned ones with great sound. Or if wireless if that’s what’s bothering him. I totally get why you want a change of scenery.

Love how the BF is selfish, when the OP is at home all day and he comes in and can’t even watch his pissing laptop in peace.

YABU

OP your boyfriends here!

OwwwMuuuum · 18/01/2023 21:20

Second thread I’ve clicked on tonight which is essentially “selfish man is eyewateringly selfish. AIBU for not attending to his every whim?”

FiloPastri · 18/01/2023 21:39

Sorry, yes, English is not my first language, so maybe "of an evening" is old fashioned or wrong 🤣 I should have said "in the evening."

Are you both just watching screens at home separately every single night? One easy solution would be for one of you to get a social life or some hobbies.

As I said in the OP, we both have other hobbies and interests, however, sometimes it is nice to relax in front of the TV at night.

We have 3 teens and out general rule is anything in the living room needs to be for everyone’s benefit so something on the tv or radio. If watching on phone etc then headphones or go elsewhere.

DulcetTones · 18/01/2023 21:50

TV is louder than a laptop, usually. If it came to that, I'd just increase the volume.

He should be allowed to watch the laptop in the living room sometimes, too, if it's more comfortable, but he should be open to sharing or alternating who gets the room, since he's such a baby about wearing headphones or earbuds.

Fullyhuman · 18/01/2023 21:52

I’d hide his laptop.

’of an evening’ isn’t dated imo, and I do think it’s regional - I am from NW England and now live in the SE and hear it more when back home.

Abba123 · 18/01/2023 21:52

Turn the TV up really loudly.

You both should be able to sit in your own lounge of the evening but he’s the one with all the choices.

Headphones or another room… or a very loud tv.

autienotnaughty · 18/01/2023 21:58

Take it in turns?

Mine will be a pointless post of no help whatsoever, as I'm sure there are plenty of things you love about your dh, but this is one of the many many reasons I adore being single. Do what you want, when you want, every single day. Utter bliss.

Yep, absolutely!

Again, no help to the OP, but you really couldn't pay me to live with a man again.

PrinceHaz · 18/01/2023 22:12

He’s selfish and inconsiderate. Might be better not to live with him.

English is my first language and I have a degree in the subject, and I say 'of an evening'. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I wear these ear buds, often wear one only so I can hear TV and OH. BUY him these.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 18/01/2023 22:16

I he wants to watch without headphones he needs to watch elsewhere. Asshole.

Where are you from, by the way, hope you don't mind me asking, but you say "of an evening" rather than "in the evening".

Oops sorry, I just read OP's posts and thought she was getting grief for saying 'of an evening'.

MarmaladeCrumpets · 18/01/2023 22:17

People normally learn to take turns when they are 3 years old. Is he potty trained?

bonzaitree · 18/01/2023 22:17

Urgh what a racket with 2 things on that would drive me nuts!

When my OH has the footy on, I put an audiobook on my headphones and sit next to him doing craft/ hobby/ journal/ playing on phone.

Then the next match we swap- he watches on lapper with headphones and I get the remote.

Suits us just fine!

BeachesDiary · 18/01/2023 22:17

He's very selfish OP. It must be awful to be cooped up in one room all day and all evening (and all night). Like being in solitary confinement! He doesn't sound very considerate.

"Of an evening" is a perfectly normal phrase, it's quite common in the Midlands. A local post office has a sign up that states; "This post office is closed of a lunchtime." It's just a colloquialism.

Dodie66 · 18/01/2023 22:24

Get some headphones and plug them in to the TV. You can get wireless ones.
just did a search on amazon for wireless headphones for TVand there are loads

DifficultBloodyWoman · 18/01/2023 22:25

Passive aggressive use of the pause button.

I use it almost every evening when DH plays around on his phone and it always results in a ‘sorry’ and muted phone.

Copperoliverbear · 18/01/2023 22:28

Tell him he hasn't got a choice he either wears headphones or he goes in a different room.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 18/01/2023 22:30

The living room is a communal space for everyone to enjoy. Nobody should be doing any activities in it that prevent other people using it.

So he should piss off to the bedroom with his YouTube or grow the fuck up and get some headphones.

Bowbellsx · 18/01/2023 22:32
