Year 5 attitude - what happened?

DS is in year 5 but in a mixed year 5/6 class. Up until this year he has always been so polite at school, well behaved, got on with the work, was eager to do well.

Since starting in this new year 5/6 class his attitude has completely changed. He's happy to do the bare minimum, says it doesn't matter if he tries hard or not as long as he is average. His behaviour has declined, he is messing around in the class, being silly at playtime. They have started talking about swear words and using them regularly at school.

I have the feeling it's with being the older boys, as he is very much influenced by others. I absolutely hate it though. I hate this attitude - does something just change at year 5? Up until now all the children have been so lovely.

Is this what it's going to be like from now on?

I think it's just there age, growing up. I don't think it's an older boy influence because at this age the age difference isn't that noticeable anymore. You need to remind him not to swear and encourage good behaviour. They do come out the other side
