If there is someone in the public eye whom, for whatever reason, I find mildly dislikable or unappealing*, am I being unreasonable to experience schadenfreude.

*maybe someone who gives me a prince harry feeling

Shaudenfreude is an unworthy emotion.

I'm sure you don't do this but some people seemingly rub their hands in glee at the slightest whiff of scandal. It's awful.

ReneBumsWombats · 18/01/2023 16:35

Schadenfreude - making the world a better place to be!

Two threads? Seriously? Seems more than a case of 'mild dislike'. Are you bored? (And before you call the kettle black, yes, I am bored. Very bored).

Choconut · 18/01/2023 16:40

I don't feel like this, I'm not a fan of Prince Harry by any stretch of the imagination but I'm not glad if bad things happen to him. I just hope he sees/realises what an idiot he's being at some point. I don't want people to face misfortune, I want them to learn from their mistakes.

VincaBlue · 18/01/2023 16:47

My friend's husband is like this. He loves watching programmes about people with severe weight problems or having their homes repossessed. I don't think it shows him in a good light at all

Fullsomefrenchie · 18/01/2023 16:50

Do you get jealous of other peoples success, that was my first thought on the Emma thread.

for me, I feel sad for you, the only people I know who behave like this are really unhappy in their lives so they want to see others having it worse or successful people fail so they feel better about their miserable lives

Cronkywonkycrinkywinky · 18/01/2023 16:51

It's just the same question without the Emma-Rad diversion. I thought I'd see if the answers differ

:-)

I think that you are way to caught up in shit that doesn't concern you at all. Get a life.

No, but you’re revealing more about your own unhappiness than I guess you intended.

if it makes you feel better about your life to see successful people fail in some way then so be it, whatever helps you sleep at night, but I’d advise trying to fix your life so you feel good about it naturally and don’t need to see successful people fail

Sorry to disappoint Frenchie, but I'm a happy, cheerful and optimistic person.

I’m hard pushed to think of a more unpleasant character trait, to be honest.

He sounds awful tbh I’d never watch anything like that.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/01/2023 16:59

Mildly disliking someone is fine. Mildly disliking someone and attempting to instigate a social media pile on, not fine.
Actively deriving pleasure from said person’s misfortune, makes the person deriving the pleasure, a bit of a cunt.
(disclaimer - assuming the object of the schadenfreude isn’t a murderer, rapist or paedophile I suppose)

I wonder what you understand unworthy to mean?

I sincerely don’t think you are. Genuinely happy people don’t look to take pleasure in successful people failing. So I understand why you don’t wish to discuss it, but that’d what I mean by you’ve revealed more than you’d like.

It’s pretty sad you’re all worked up over a young tennis player whose probably half your age.

There is almost an element of goading to your writing as well. Like you want to goad people and fight. Or gleeful that people disagree with you.

as said, it’s not now happh people behave, I hope you find happiness at some point and don’t feel the need to do this.

IncompleteSenten · 18/01/2023 17:02

I do.

I was bullied so badly in school I tried to kill myself.

I am always pleased to learn about the latest awful things that have happened to them.

I refuse to feel bad about feeling that way either.

nutherwun · 18/01/2023 17:02

It is a bit weird to feel that @Cronkywonkycrinkywinky unless that person has done some serious damage to your own life.

zinch · 18/01/2023 17:03

God, the answers on here! Everyone is so po-faced and perfect.

I love a bit of a scandal.

I note that you are trying to persuade me that I am unhappy.

Does this give you a feeling of superiority?

Do you really think it's weird nutherwun.

Imagine your gob-shite colleague dropped their (cold) lunch down their jumper, wouldn't you smile (inside)
