If there is someone in the public eye whom, for whatever reason, I find mildly dislikable or unappealing*, am I being unreasonable to experience schadenfreude.

*maybe someone who gives me a prince harry feeling

He sounds awful tbh I’d never watch anything like that.

He is. He's racist too

God, the answers on here! Everyone is so po-faced and perfect.

I love a bit of a scandal.

Op has already posted a thread saying she dislikes a certain sportsperson and takes delight in their misfortune.

said sportsperson has done nothing wrong and the only misfortune they suffer appears to be losing.

op is delighting in someone they don’t know, losing. Not at someone getting their “just desserts”, which is what I think you’re talking about.

I do.

I was bullied so badly in school I tried to kill myself.

I am always pleased to learn about the latest awful things that have happened to them.

I refuse to feel bad about feeling that way either.

Good for you. I think it's a perfectly normal and healthy emotion.

And essentially harmless.

I'm really suprised by how sententious some mumsnetters are.

Delights is overstating it. Takes mild pleasure would be more like it.

Interesting to see where you draw the line :-)

Well- I just preempting someone invoking Godwin’s Law 😉

nutherwun · 18/01/2023 17:13

I don't take pleasure in the misfortune of others unless they've done serious damage to my life.

If someone dropped their (cold) lunch down their jumper, I'd have a laugh with them if they laughed about it but wouldn't take any notice if not.

Are you getting mixed up with taking pleasure and finding stuff funny @Cronkywonkycrinkywinky ?!

You've disregarded the gobshite bit.

Assuming that you didn't like this lunch dropper, are you sure you wouldn't take a bit of pleasure in their splodged top?

I wish Harry & Megan would shut up and go away bc I find them irritating- however I would never wish bad things to happen to them.

So for instance, on a more personal level - I have some very rude/annoying neighbours. I’d be quite happy if they moved away but I wouldn’t wish them any harm.

So I guess it depends on the level of Shaudenfreude.

But thinking about it - if Putin had an unfortunate accident and fell off a cliff I wouldn’t feel sad. But Emma whatserface is hardly Putin.

I don't think you should feel bad. It's different if the person has caused you or others to suffer than just enjoying others unhappiness as a personality trait

Noonesperfect · 18/01/2023 17:19

If someone appears to be full of themselves and think they're better than others. I confess I do find it mildly pleasing if they get brought down a peg or two. I'm not particularly proud of this trait though. Isn't it just human in cases like that?

Noonesperfect · 18/01/2023 17:19

Would not wish any harm to them though.

Cronkywonkycrinkywinky · 18/01/2023 17:23

Imagine that you read in the news that Piers Morgan had permanently lost his sense of taste* and smell.

Can you really say that you wouldn't get a tiny amount of gratification from that.

*Olfactory taste, that is.

This is very different tnough, the op even feels happy when she sees a w0 year old tennis player Fail. I’m fairly sure Emma has not bullied the op. So the ops just jealous of her and feels happy if she fails.

op no I don’t take pleasure in my colleagues mishaps, you sound like a very unpleasant person.

No, why would I be so invested in piers Morgan having a health issue. How odd.

Piers Morgan is an odious individual. I wouldn’t take pleasure from him having a health issue, but I would if he lost a job due to whatever bile he says. In my mind that’s just getting what you deserve.

your version of schadenfreude seems to be being happy that someone who has done nothing wrong is now less successful than they were at first. It’s weird, and not nice at all.

Tekkentime · 18/01/2023 17:28

There is a proper phrase for it but i can't remember what it is 😞

No, I meant for taking pleasure in other's misery. Thanks though 🙂

StressedToTheMaxxx · 18/01/2023 17:33

I take pleasure in specific peoples misfortunes ie the workplace bully when her shit attitude finally caught up with her after years of making peoples lives a misery and she got fired. My cheating abusive ex when he was left single lonely and miserable after I dumped him for treating me like utter shit and cheating numerous times. Couldn't find himself anyone to put up with his shit despite him thinking he would be living the life of riley and I am now happily moved on and healed from the relationship.

As for Harry, as much as I'm not a fan of how he's going about things, I would be sad to hear that any major misfortune had befallen him.

Puffin87 · 18/01/2023 17:35

Fullsomefrenchie · 18/01/2023 16:50

Do you get jealous of other peoples success, that was my first thought on the Emma thread.

for me, I feel sad for you, the only people I know who behave like this are really unhappy in their lives so they want to see others having it worse or successful people fail so they feel better about their miserable lives

I think it's only something only miserable people with no sense of agency in their own lives do.

Fullsomefrenchie · 18/01/2023 17:36

Cronkywonkycrinkywinky · 18/01/2023 17:32

So much perfection!

Not finding joy in others misery or seeing successful people fail foesnt make us perfect op. It makes us normal well adjusted people
