To go to A&E with hemerroids

bumproblems · 17/01/2023 17:18

I am 37 weeks pregnant and have hemerroids, I can't get a proper look I think there's 3 and they are swollen and angry and agonising. I can barely walk or sit. I phoned GP and got scheriproct ointment and suppositories which I'm using but I have never been in so much pain in my life and nothing is giving me relief. I've been lying in bed with ice on them for an hour just tried to stand up and it's still agony. I'm weeing a million times a day and night and when I sit on the toilet and then stand up they sort of contract every single time and it brings tears to my eyes how much it hurts. The gp never looked just prescribed over the phone. I'm worried something is wrong I've had piles before but this pain is something I've never experienced 😭😭😭

Have you spoken to your midwife , I'd think twice before having to stand/sit and wait in A &E for hours.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 17/01/2023 17:22

You don’t need A&E but you do need painkillers. Call 111 and ask to see an out of hours doctors

I’ve been in your position and the pain is sickening. And I got good painkillers. You have my sympathies OP.

Hangupsrus · 17/01/2023 17:22

I would op, sometimes they can become strangulated and also you can develop blood clots in them, both of which need seeing to. Sounds to me like you can't carry on like that either way and someone needs to take a look and see what else can be done.

Blort · 17/01/2023 17:23

Yanbu, you've experienced piles before so this pain worse than ever could be something else (eg strangulation).

I would call 111 or go to A&E and expect a wait.

CakeCrumbs44 · 17/01/2023 17:24

Call 111, you'll be waiting a very long time at A&E

Myotherpetisamouse · 17/01/2023 17:25

The pharmacy can sometimes dispense cream with local anaesthetic in which might help

IDontDrinkTea · 17/01/2023 17:27

Call your maternity triage and ask if you can be seen there. A&E will keep you waiting hours

bumproblems · 17/01/2023 17:27

I finally managed to get a clear photo 2 of them are blue which I think means they're thrombosed

OP posts:
Bamboozle123 · 17/01/2023 17:28

Is it an accident or emergency?

Go back to the GP/ midwife and say that the treatment isn't helping, see what they suggest.

Tonsiltrouble · 17/01/2023 17:29

Probably thrombosed - more likely to be an ooh issue than an ED one, but you have my sympathy, it is utterly excruciating

LavenderfortheBees · 17/01/2023 17:34

Eesh. Are you able to get to the maternity unit? Or minor injuries?

you can only say you don't need to go to A&E for hemorrhoids if you never had them. Mine started to get seriously bad when I was pregnant and when I was breastfeeding all hell broke loose with 3 fissures on top of the hemorrhoids, it was absolute agony! I was offered an operation then but didn't want to stop breastfeeding. They eventually they got better when I stopped taking iron (which makes you very constipated) but I suffered on and off for years and finally had them operated on a year and a half ago, the relief was immense!

Yes, you should go, if they trombose it can be dangerous. I don't think they will do anything more invasive at A&E but you will get a direct referral for gastroenterology with a view to operate. I'd take an operation with both hands, it's been a relief for me.

AlwaysAReason · 17/01/2023 17:53

Ah, OP it sounds agonising! You do need to be seen by someone. I think you'd have a long wait in A+E, but don't let that stop you if you really think you need to go there.

BurtonsRevenge · 17/01/2023 17:56

I wouldn't go to A ans E , no. There is no extra intervention they can give you, especially since you are 37 weeks pregnant, and you will simply wait a long time for someone to tell you this. Get an ice compress (covered in cloth) and put it on them to help reduce the swelling, paracetamol, plenty of fibre.

This.

NewHopeNow · 17/01/2023 17:57

There is no point in going to a and e. They will not even consider any interventions while you are pregnant. It's painkillers, ointment and ice, all of which you can get without 8 hours in a and e.

This is really misleading post.

  1. Gastroenterology don't deal with haemorrhoids (surgeons do after GP has tried Conservative management
  2. Operating would not be planned in pregnancy
  3. Best option is to get GP to refer you to colorectal for after you give birth
In the meantime ice compress, paracetamol and make sure you aren't constipated
BHRK · 17/01/2023 17:59

Don’t go to A&E, it’s not life threatening. Phone 111 and say you need to see an OOh GP tonight. Then get your partner to drive you

Yesthatismychildsigh · 17/01/2023 18:00

I’ve been there. I was referred immediately to A&E, admitted and operated on first thing next morning. The pain is unbelievable, isn’t it. Please just go. 💐

Endersduffduff · 17/01/2023 18:02

I’m sorry to hear about this, OP.

If pain is severe, it does suggest A&E (although the wait there may not be ideal at 37 weeks!).

NHS description of severe pain (along with moderate and mild too so you can compare it) below. It is taken from the haemorrhoids page of the website.

Agree with this. It isn't about them being 'just piles', it's about you being in an insufferable amount of pain. I really hope you can get some relief. X

A&E isn’t just for life threatening situations though.

I was just about to post a screenshot of the above page advising to go to A&E if you are in severe pain. Hopefully you’re not at that point though. You have my sympathy, I know haemorrhoids can be absolutely awful.

PotterLottery · 17/01/2023 18:14

I don't have any advice but just wanted to say how sorry I am you're going through h this it must be so bloody awful. As if being heavily pregnant wasnt bad enough! I got piles when pregnant and still suffer now. They're the most terrible thing. Hope you can get some help x

No, not misleading.

She is 37 weeks pregnant, of course they wouldn't operate now,. However, she will give birth soon. She'd better starting the referral process now, better sooner than later.

Colorectal is part of Gastroenterology, which is the bigger umbrella dept. Like Audiology is considered part of Ear, Nose and Throat (I am deaf and I get to see the audiologist AND the ENT Consultant as both are part of the same bigger dept).

If she is really thrombosed it can put her in danger that close to birth. At A&E she can get a fast track referral to Gastro/Colorectal (whichever you prefer) for an operation as soon as she gives birth.

Like I said, unless you have suffered from really nasty hemorrhoids you can't possibly imagine how agonising it is. Everyone saying "Don't go to A&E", "Go to your GP" or "Put some cream and take paracetamol" have zero idea how intense is the pain. The anus is one the places in the human body with most nerve endings. The pain there is horrific.

Anyway, hope that helps.

CohenTree · 17/01/2023 18:21

Don’t go to A&E, it’s not life threatening. I went to A&E recently as I had an ear plug stuck in my ear!
Go OP.
