To go to A&E with hemerroids

I am 37 weeks pregnant and have hemerroids, I can't get a proper look I think there's 3 and they are swollen and angry and agonising. I can barely walk or sit. I phoned GP and got scheriproct ointment and suppositories which I'm using but I have never been in so much pain in my life and nothing is giving me relief. I've been lying in bed with ice on them for an hour just tried to stand up and it's still agony. I'm weeing a million times a day and night and when I sit on the toilet and then stand up they sort of contract every single time and it brings tears to my eyes how much it hurts. The gp never looked just prescribed over the phone. I'm worried something is wrong I've had piles before but this pain is something I've never experienced 😭😭😭

Knew the midwife would sort you out. Let us know how you get on

Northernsoul72 · 18/01/2023 10:14

Glad you're going to be seen. Bloody awful things, that unless you have had them I don'tthink you have any idea how horrific they are.

Patineur · 18/01/2023 14:07

I do hope this gets sorted out.

Honestly, if a man was in this sort of pain I strongly suspect the GP wouldn't be telling him to take a paracetamol and put up with it.

BornBlonde · 18/01/2023 14:13

That's great your MW is getting you seen. I hope you are much more comfortable now

stopbeeping · 18/01/2023 14:17

Ring maternity day care go in and have them check you over for uti and blood pressure etc
Then stronger pain relief like oramorph IM morphine codeine dihydrocodeine or tramadol are all used in pregnancy
CTG to monitor baby is standard like a previous poster said, when you have stronger pain relief the first few times to check baby is ok

So sorry you're in this mess

Codiene.

I have been given pethadine and fentanyl whilst pregnant.

Mars27 · 18/01/2023 15:28

Happy to hear you're being seen, @bumproblems . Let us know how you get on x

StellaAndCrow · 18/01/2023 15:31

How can OP best get hold of Instillagel (sp? the local anaesthetic gel). Will the GP be able to prescribe it? I feel for you OP and hope you can get relief ASAP, the gel sounds good.

StellaAndCrow · 18/01/2023 15:33

Oh that's good that you're being seen - I hope you get some magic gel! :)

xogossipgirlxo · 18/01/2023 15:35

Fingers crossed OP for successful treatment. A&E seemed like terrible idea, waiting there for few hours in pain when they can't do much anyway. Hopefully OB will sort it out X

Boopeedoop · 18/01/2023 15:47

Hope you're doing better today and your appointment went well xx

determinedtomakethiswork · 18/01/2023 15:50

That sounds so incredibly painful. I hope you got some relief today.

Newnamefornewyear2023 · 18/01/2023 16:31

Good luck, OP. Hope the obs can do something…

Newnamefornewyear2023 · 18/01/2023 16:32

If you take codeine don’t forget to take gentle laxatives like fybogel combined with lactulose so you don’t get constipated

Blowyourowntrumpet · 18/01/2023 16:36

I think 111 would be the right thing to do. I'm sorry you're in so much pain. It sounds awful

A&E is not appropriate.

After a night of absolute agony and no sleep I text my midwife who has said one of the obstetricians on the ward will see me so I'm on my way in. I don't know what they can do but even just something stronger than paracetamol will be a start Sad

Hope they were able to sort something for you. They are horrific.

All this talk of frozen peas has been remembering when I had hideous piles after having one of the kids and the midwife sent my husband out to buy plastic gloves and told him to fill each finger with peas and for him to give me a new one every 30 mins. The excitement as I approached 30 mins to be getting a new cold freezing cold compress! Ooohhhhhh.

bumproblems · 18/01/2023 19:16

Unfortunately not much help Sad they took one look and said yes those are some very angry, thrombosed haemorrhoids. They recommended I put sugar on them to shrink them?! To keep up with the schiroproct as it's good stuff and gave me some lidocaine syringes to try and numb it more. Sigh!

Pinkbananas01 · 18/01/2023 19:21

Sounds bizarre but the sugar can work, used to try it on the colorectal unit I worked in yrs ago & did avoid surgery for some people

Roundabout78 · 18/01/2023 19:29

Has the lidocaine helped op? I hope you’ve had some relief

QuestionableMouse · 18/01/2023 23:11

Sugar can reduce the swelling which may make them less angry.

mrssunshinexxx · 15/10/2023 20:29

@bumproblems what happened after you gave birth op? I'm on a wait list for an operation on mine they are hidous. I also got thromboses ones at 37 weeks pregnant, agony! Worse than contractions !

MollyMarples · 15/10/2023 21:02

You poor poor woman. Surely there is more that can be done. How have you been?

I went to the midwife with piles in late pregnancy, not as bad as yours, but so bad that I couldn’t walk further than absolutely necessary. I didn’t poo for three weeks, and the constipation is what caused it, I think. The midwife sarcastically said ‘ew lovely!’ And told me to google which medication might be okay during pregnancy. Really disappointed. I just used anusol and tried to push them in. Luckily the piles went away just before ELCS.

Pregnant again now and I’m going to start having lots and lots of fruit! My baby has two fruit pouches a day and she is regular as clockwork 🤣 I’m going to have two of her prune and pear pouches every day too!
