Can't get any job

Desperatetime · 17/01/2023 09:36

I'm so upset with everything please go easy on me.
My dp has been in the county 12 years with no work permission and has recently obtained his leave to remain so now as the right to work we have been together 6 years and I have been struggling along to support us both and I have also been using a inheritance to get by as well but now money has run out and we have nothing. I'm not in the best health either and we dont have enough money to cover house expenses currently we haven't a penny until the 30th of this month when I get paid low income by the way.
Since dp got his right to work he has applied for job after job only to suffer rejection after rejection this is most likely due to no work trail here in the uk so massive gap in cv which is impossible to produce. He didn't really have any skill back in his home country either. He can't get references nothing so we are stuck.
We are both in deep depression with no money I have left messages with training providers and nobody ever responds and we don't have money to pay for training he has signed on with agencies and they are not forthcoming with anything I'm not sure what to do but has anybody got any suggestions because we are heading into poverty.

I second (third?) hospitality.

Even kitchen porters are in short supply. That’s basically washing up. I would have offered almost anyone who applied that job. The sector is DESPERATE.

Tohaveandtohold · 17/01/2023 10:13

I’m surprised he can’t get a warehouse job. There are lots of immigrants I know and that’s always their first port of call. Even those with work experience in their home countries are unable to get work reference so there’s always a character reference and maybe some charity he knew when he was seeking asylum who can provide a professional reference. For many of those jobs, they don’t even do interviews, just some tests to be sure you can do some simple maths for packing orders and that’s it.
He needs to be proactive and walk into those agencies physically, not just sit and do it online.

Yoyooo · 17/01/2023 10:14

OP you have been posting similar for quite possibly years.

Do you think your DP actually wants a job?

There are so many no-skill jobs where companies are desperate for staff - packing, warehouse work etc.

PifandHercule · 17/01/2023 10:17

You might want to apply for hospitality jobs as the training is provided and generally references are not required. As long as you go into an interview with a positive atittude and a genuine desire to work, the rest will be fairly straightforward.
You also get part of the uniform for free and a free meal whilst working so that is an extra saving. Good luck!

"We are both in deep depression with no money"

This may be the issue. No matter how many jobs are out there, he will struggle to summon up the energy and willpower to get a job (and keep it) if he is in deep depression.

Have you each been to the GP to ask about anti-depressants? That might be the first step.

If he hasn't worked for 12 years, has depression, and doesn't have transport except a bicycle, then he will struggle.

You have my sympathy.

littleburn · 17/01/2023 10:21

I used to work with asylum seekers and refugees OP, so I completely get how tough this is. The reality is until you get your leave to remain in the country (which can take years) and transition from 'asylum seeker' to 'refugee' status, you are simply not allowed to work and nor can you claim benefits like a U.K. citizen would be able to. Both were deemed to be 'pull factors' by successive governments and so the right to either has been denied to asylum seekers.

That said, there is now an absolute dearth of EU labour to fill jobs in warehouses, hospitality, fruit picking etc etc as previous posters have pointed out, so it's unusual that your DH is struggling so much. The Refugee Council provide specialist support for refugees in the transition to employment, also please make sure that you are your DH are receiving any benefits you are entitled to now that his status has changed:

He has been on indeed mostly and applied for loads of packing type jobs some are advertised by agencies but he isn't getting any calls and there are hundreds going after the jobs.

The job market across the board and in all fields isn’t one where 100’s are chasing jobs. Employers are desperate. I would question his assertion that he can’t get anything even in the West Midlands.

SecretVictoria · 17/01/2023 10:31

Would he have been allowed to volunteer as an asylum seeker? I work close to an airport and a lot of the Afghan people who were evacuated are living in hotels, they aren’t allowed to do any work at all.

I imagine the problem is the 12 year gap, lots of employers will be put off. Working in care etc you need a DBS and that’s a huge gap to account for. Likewise, most jobs require some formal qualifications.

knittingaddict · 17/01/2023 10:31

I thought this sounded familiar.

Bobshhh · 17/01/2023 10:33

Warehouse or security work?

LosingMyPancakes · 17/01/2023 10:33

caringcarer · 17/01/2023 09:53

Whereabouts in country are you OP? I am in West Midlands and agencies will take anyone who can breathe for warehouse, picking and packing roles. They are always advertising. Full time permanent roles for warehouse picking and packing too available. I know in West Midlands due to linking to lots of different motorways we have far more warehouse, pick and pack as West Midlands is the UK hub for type of work.

This. My uncle (with limited English) picked up a factory job after singing up with a couple of temp agencies in a week. We're over in the Black Country - lots of factories, always looking for staff!

Mirabai · 17/01/2023 10:34

Can he drive? If so he can courier. Otherwise warehouse work packing etc.

Apairofsparklingeyes · 17/01/2023 10:34

Has he tried getting cleaning jobs? An advert in a shop window would get him work almost immediately!

EezyOozy · 17/01/2023 10:35

Has he tried going to an agency? Or a supermarket? Or perhaps McDonald’s? I don’t mean to offend, but these are organisations that take on young people with no prior experience.

Hankunamatata · 17/01/2023 10:35

Agency work to build up some work experience. Nights in warehouses usually crying out for people. Dh used to bike to work.

CrimsonPostBox · 17/01/2023 10:36

What about fruit and vegetable picking? There's a huge shortage so it's actually not that badly paid.

CrimsonPostBox · 17/01/2023 10:39

Average pay of a fruit and veg picker in the UK is about £11 an hour.

Desperatetime · 17/01/2023 10:40

Thanks for the suggestions we will keep trying

He can ride a bike but don't you need a motorbike for uber

The students near to me do it using electric scooters. They work in the evenings mostly, and seem to think it's OK.

whoamI00 · 17/01/2023 10:42

I think it'd faster for you to find a decent wage job. Would this be a possible option?

You mean you'll keep posting about the situation, while your partner will continue to pretend to look for work and take money from you.

Honestly Op you should apologise to the countless posters (over the years) who have taken time to offer advice, when you know full well they're wasting their time as your partner doesn't actually want to get a job.

fairgame84 · 17/01/2023 10:44

DH is a foreign national with no qualifications and easily got a warehouse job once he was eligible to work. They take on anyone with a pulse so if your DH isn't getting call backs there must be something wrong with his application form or cv.
Once they've got a job, any job, it's easier to move to a better job.
DHs first job was at Next warehouse via an agency.
He bikes to work.

WitchDancer · 17/01/2023 10:44

Has he tried the Telford area? They're always on the lookout for staff as it is a high employment area
