Was thinking about this today and was thinking, yes it would go a long way towards solving it. For example, I could get effective, regular treatment for my chronic back pain, I could get sunshine, an excellent psychotherapist, a life coach, live where I wanted to, create a purpose for my life, stop worrying about the future, help others, not feel inadequate anymore. And just feel in control of my life.

Is it just as simple as that? Had a v dark weekend, where every little thing sends me into a spiral of sadness and hopelessness, and thought how much better I would feel if I just had some more choices in life and could escape how I feel, which money does give you?

There are different types of depression

If money would cure your depression you’re not depressed.

I would be able to pay for the best therapists and live a healthier life, which would help to manage the depression, but no, it wouldn't cure it. I love my life, but I still get horrendous depressive episodes and have done since I was a child. People who have circumstancial depression may disagree as the money could solve the problem that is causing the depression. In my case it's brain chemicals/how my brain is wired, there is no other cause.

How would a lottery win solve that?

I am on NHS waiting list for 5 joint replacements

DismantledKing · 16/01/2023 14:12

No. Of course not.

OrdinaryAva · 16/01/2023 14:15

It would come with a different set of problems.

JeanBodel · 16/01/2023 14:34

It would cure Shit Life Syndrome, which sadly is what a lot of people have.

I’d rather be depressed in a 5 star hotel in Bali than a run down council flat with damp and no heating.

If you had depression, you wouldn’t even have the energy to book that holiday, never mind go on it.

Idk why people who have absolutely no experience of depression are answering this question?

Private healthcare?

MilkyYay · 16/01/2023 14:39

Based on my understanding that clinical depression isn't caused by bad shit happening in your life etc, I'd guess that money might alleviate some symptoms, often temporarily, but it wouldn't "cure" it.

If it would then no rich people would get depression and lots do.

Depression isn't black and white is it. People do very well at hiding their depression.

It could help but it still requires action on the part of the winner to be helpful.

E.g. it could pay for a membership at a fancy gym, but the winner would still have to muster up the energy to get out of the house and go there in order to benefit from the endorphins.

It could pay for all manner of activities and trips, but it still requires effort on the part of the winner to arrange them / contact others to come with them / schedule them in and get up out of bed to go to them etc.

It could mean you could jack in your job and not have to worry about money, but it would require the winner to ensure they replace the daily routine with some kind of meaningful, purposeful activity.

And then you realise that a lot of the things that make us / keep us happy (exercise / things planned in the diary with friends / contact with others / sunshine / sense of purpose / healthy meals / routines etc) can actually be achieved for little cost. And whilst money of course helps, it is our own attitude to our lives and our daily habits that keep us happy.

terriblyangryattimes · 16/01/2023 16:44

It would for me. I could fix my teeth, either pay off the mortgage or upgrade to a house with a drive, buy a second car and be able to take my kids on holidays rather than camping trips.
I'd still work I think.

holierthanthou73 · 16/01/2023 16:51

It won’t cure my depression but it will certainly make life easier and access to treatment affordable.

icanwearwhatiwant · 16/01/2023 16:58

For me, yes.
I wouldn't have to work, I could take trips somewhere sunny in the winter, since I'm not working I'd have time to exercise and cook properly.
I wouldn't have to worry about how the hell to pay for my bathroom to be fixed.
I'd get private medical treatment for my skin and my thyroid issues.

But all those things mean that I'm miserable about certain situations in my life rather than clinically depressed.
Not sure money can buy good mental health.

CeriB82 · 16/01/2023 16:59

Blimey YES!!

Mimilamore · 16/01/2023 17:23

Choices.... that would be the difference. Choices and options. Would not cure clinical depression no but would remove the huge energy sapping, anxiety being poor brings, giving time to address your mental health and pay for what helps ease the crippling condition.
You can have an awareness of what would improve your mental health and some of these things are free but boy what having the option to choose would make, taking a whole area of worry and misery away in one fell swoop.
