Was thinking about this today and was thinking, yes it would go a long way towards solving it. For example, I could get effective, regular treatment for my chronic back pain, I could get sunshine, an excellent psychotherapist, a life coach, live where I wanted to, create a purpose for my life, stop worrying about the future, help others, not feel inadequate anymore. And just feel in control of my life.

Is it just as simple as that? Had a v dark weekend, where every little thing sends me into a spiral of sadness and hopelessness, and thought how much better I would feel if I just had some more choices in life and could escape how I feel, which money does give you?

No. Don’t get me wrong, I would be over the moon, but depression is a complex amalgamation of causes. It’s rarely a case of it disappearing when one problem resolves. I should know, I’ve been working on my life for years to try and alleviate it and it doesn’t work for long.

InBerlin · 15/01/2023 21:01

Not £37 million or anythingtoo big, I think it would be stressful. But I would love to win the thunderball. Half a million would be manageable

and Flowers for you OP

Even some millionaire’s are depressed. That’s proof if ever there was any that money doesn’t buy happiness or immunity to mental illness.

ScreamingInfidelities · 15/01/2023 21:09

I’m fairly certain it would, yes. The main thing stressing me out it is my job, it pays well but I hate it. I can’t carry on with the ridiculous workload, stressful environment and lack of support/follow-through from above. Winning enough to pay off our mortgage would allow me to retrain to do something else.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 15/01/2023 21:13

To be honest when people say "money isn't everything" it certainly takes a lot of the stress away from things.
Not worrying about money to pay for essentials and having a bit more disposable income for luxuries does make life a lot nicer

MrsMorrisey · 15/01/2023 20:52

It matters to a certain extent.
I think having a lot of money can actually cause stress in itself.
Be hard to see what's real.

I agree, I think the richer you are, the less sure you can be about your friends being genuine

BertaHoon · 15/01/2023 21:17

No. I'm offended you had to ask. No clue.

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/01/2023 21:19

As depression and a a medical condition- money won't 'cure' it.

autienotnaughty · 15/01/2023 22:00

If your depression is situational then yes of course.

I guess it would depend on what was the cause of your depression and if money issues were a precipitating factor.

I live with depression. Sometimes I am totally content and happy with my life; other times, I am not. I do not have any money worries, so I do not think winning the lottery would cure it.

I do find buying random shit when I am feeling depressed gives me some temporary fulfilment, like a kind of excitement that I am getting this new 'thing', But it's relatively short-lived excitement.

I have a low boredom threshold, which I am sure contributes to my depression. I am not convinced that having lots of money would resolve that.

JaceLancs · 15/01/2023 22:17

As all my stress anxiety and depression is either work or financially related then yes definitely

Cuppasoupmonster · 15/01/2023 22:19

It would certainly make me much less depressed, but a few more ‘existential’ worries would remain.

Karmakamelion · 15/01/2023 22:19

Yes as the I could leave the man child I live with without compromising my standard of life or more importantly my kids

pawprintseverywhere · 15/01/2023 22:20

I'm not depressed but starting to feel frustrated and stuck in a rut ... so yep a lottery win would help that for sure lol

Heatherbell1978 · 15/01/2023 22:25

Yes! I suffer anxiety and have bouts of depression. A lot of my anxiety is hinged around my kids future and ours to a lesser extent. If I could buy that security I'd have a few less things to worry about. It may not cure me completely but I'd love to tick off all those things that keep me awake at night.

Cherrysoup · 15/01/2023 22:27

Doubtful, but it could make your life more comfortable.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 15/01/2023 22:30

No, but it would alleviate the problems caused by not having enough money. New roof, sort out the damp in the wall, turn the heating up above 17.5. Be able to pay for help for DS. Could just pay someone to take away the boxes of stuff in the garage rather than have to try and sell things.

Wouldn't fix my life but would help make things less of a struggle.

Wolfiefan · 15/01/2023 22:32

Absolutely not. When I was deep in depression I could hardly get out of bed or manage a conversation. Money wouldn’t have cured that.

SlaveToTheVibe · 15/01/2023 22:32

My only problem is that my mums dead.
so…. No.

a lottery win would still be welcome however.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 15/01/2023 22:34

Is there a way you could earn more money now? New job? Over time? Evening job?

youshouldnthaveasked · 15/01/2023 22:34

I’m not depressed but life would be easier in lots of way with a lottery win

GinoVino · 15/01/2023 22:38

No. I'm not depressed because I'm poor.

MotherofBingo · 15/01/2023 22:51

It wouldn't cure my depression because money can't take away the horrific childhood I had that led to my very shaky mental health today. It would however get me out of my current situation that is certainly not helping my depression. I dream about winning the lottery all the time, I don't want a mansion or luxury holidays - I just want a safe home for me and my children and to get a decent qualification.

GlowingBear · 15/01/2023 22:51

There has been a study done on this OP. Basically winning money did improve people’s happiness levels for the first couple of years. They then all slowly returned to their previous levels of happiness. a lot of it had to do with getting used to the new standard of living, then beginning to take it for granted as it became their new normal.

I imagine most winners were in average circumstances though. Things like being cold or in pain are miserable and I think I’m that regard it would make an ongoing difference
