People that Say they don't watch TV

OMG so annoying. Esp those that lie.
You do watch TV so stop making out you spend all evening not looking at a screen!
Or those that say they never watch movies or go cinema. You then find out they go twice a year.
Watching sport or netflix counts as watching tv regardless if you watch it on your laptop or not.

I was taken a back by someone a while ago saying they don't watch TV or on their laptop or phone in evenings or watch films. Didn't find it relaxing. Due to being on computer all day at work.
Yet a couple of months later starting talking about amazon netflix and some movies they had seen.
I was thinking but you said you don't watch tv/ movies to relax in evenings.
Obviously they do sometimes or more than sometimes.
Why say you never do something..

I used to say I didn't watch TV because I genuinely didn't. I preferred to read instead and didn't find TV relaxing.

But now my eyesight is shit so I don't read as much and have started watching TV and found I do quite like it after all!

I don’t watch TV.

It is not something I do of an evening regularly.

I watch the odd film on occasion, maybe one a month!

Why is that so hard to believe?

Wintercurrentbun · 14/01/2023 22:25

I’m guessing there isn’t much on TV tonight then..😂

DoNotIron · 14/01/2023 22:25

Pendantic!!!

Eh?

Bubblebubblebah · 14/01/2023 22:25

I know what you mean!

My family member
"oh we don't have tv, we don't want to spend evenings infront of it (judgy look at my tv). We don't watch it"
"Didn't you just talk about netflix and Bake off?"
"Yeah but we watch it on pc monitor. We just wouldn't want to spend time in front of tv wasting time"

lifeturnsonadime · 14/01/2023 22:26

we went away for a week at new year and didn’t switch the holiday let tv on once! Our teen used it for gaming !

i have no idea why people are so insecure at the concept of others not watching tv! Bizarre !

Shock horror I know people who don't own a tv

Some people don't watch TV why is that hard to understand?

Are you trying to justify something to yourself?

I've already said the ones that say they don't watch TV. But yet have every netflix amazon. Brit box. Sky. Etc.
Either they watch on phone or laptop. And probably TV sometimes too. Makes no difference its just watching tv on different device. Hence device s.

Is @XenoBitch your family member Grin

I rarely watch TV. We don't live in the UK so have an outdoors lifestyle mainly

Tonight is the first time I have watched TV in months. So much better things to be doing

IntentionalError · 14/01/2023 22:26

I know someone who doesn’t own a television & never has. He genuinely doesn’t watch TV, and it’s interesting to see how some people react to this. They seem to find it very challenging and then try to justify their own viewing habits, eg “I only really watch nature documentaries” (So how come you have been talking about Love Island all afternoon?)

It’s really very odd indeed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I also know someone without a television, but she watches things on her tablet on and phone. TV = television.

But do you go around telling people you never watch TV?
If not then this post isn’t about you

WetLettuce2 · 14/01/2023 22:28

I don’t have access to any screens. I don’t have a phone, or wifi.

I read, and think deeply.

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:29

I used to watch so many bbc and itv drama and esp live. There doesn't seem to be as many in last couple or years. I still watch lots of TV. Just not always when it airs live as there is less to choose from.
But a screen is watching TV. Bit like listening to the radio. Doesn't matter where the sound comes from. Radio..car. phone. Alexa .

I don’t watch much tv. I could definitely live without it. Some days our tv isn’t on at all. I do like 24hours in A&E but That’s only if I remember it’s on.. Rarely watch movies unless it’s Christmas movies, that’s our tradition in December with dd and I. As for the cinema The greatest showman was probably the last movie I saw. In the cinema.

I'd much rather read a book.

BettyOBarley · 14/01/2023 22:30

I don't really watch TV.

It's on every night and I sit Infront of it while DH watches it but I just have this weird thing where I can't concentrate on it at all. DH is watching a film now that we both agreed upon and I haven't watched a minute of it. I swear Mumsnet / phone scrolling has killed my attention span!!

SandyLanez · 14/01/2023 22:30

I think it’s interesting to see how pedantic people get when trying to make themselves feel better.

Yes TV stands for television but colloquially most understand it to now mean more than that. It’s like saying you never call people because you only use FaceTime.

Bubblebubblebah · 14/01/2023 22:31

I think it's the technological development.
Aome people move from TVs to tablets. They still watch same shite like me, but my blind arse requires it on 50inch screen. I would miss so much with just tablet!
We are the same, just with different screens🤷🏻

Maybe the language will evolve and we will love from tv (which doesn't mean to most of us the physical box only) to some other saying like "watching stuff"

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:31

I feel like so many men say they don't watch TV.. yeh right..
And women thar wanna make out they are being creative instead.

Some people don’t watch tv though, my mum doesn’t...she never replaced her tv when it broke about 15 years ago because she didn’t use it and she doesn’t have a computer.

She does have a smartphone, but, no WiFi, so she doesn’t stream anything either.

I’m pretty sure the last time she went to the cinema was because she took my kids about 10 years ago.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 14/01/2023 22:31

I didn’t see your issue until people started demonstrating it in the replies. I never realised people say they don’t watch TV when they mainly watch streaming services etc. That’s what I do but wouldn’t think that it counts as not watching TV 😂. Also a screen is a screen.

RobertaFirmino · 14/01/2023 22:31

I can't abide TV snobbery. I don't watch a lot of it but I DO watch it. Including Coronation Street and Eastenders. Soap snobbery is laughable too - of course it's fine not to enjoy them but the smugness exhibited by some on here is laughable. If it was called Kroning Gade, based in a district of Aarhus and featured characters like Sven Barlow, Hildur Ogden and a factory where they made those chunky Nordic jumpers, they'd be all over it like a rash!

arcencielpoisson · 14/01/2023 22:32

YABVVU. Why do you care?

Some people are just not into tv. I was called a liar by someone else for not knowing what Stranger Things was. (I do now, because I googled it but I have still never watched it). I don't have Netflix, and we do watch some tv sometimes, but it's certainly not weekly.

My bugbear are social smokers but I would never start a thread about it as I am not so invested in other peoples life choices that don't affect me.

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:32

I don't when they watching TV was seen as negative in recent times ??
