Shocked in relation to manga books being read at school

I am really hacked off about this.

A couple of days ago ds11 comes home from school and says a friend is reading One Punch Man (number 22 for those familiar) in the "free reading" class – title is bad enough as it relates to killing someone with one punch – ds says that it is very, very violent and explicit and in particular the drawings of the females are weird. He draws one for me. I look at it dumbfounded as it looked like a woman wearing S&M from ds' drawing. I say I will find the book online and have a look. Didn't have time that evening and yesterday he comes home and says he has looked again and he really wants me to look it up on the computer as he saw other women which were disturbing and he wanted to know what I thought.

I have a look and find “mosquito girl” - a young slim woman with huge breasts with cut outs where the nipples are, showing the nipples and the material cut out all the way down so basically the character is no wearing knickers or anything there at all, so a very sexily drawn naked young woman with bits of material down the sides and around the breasts but no other covering and nipples showing – in all sorts of positions – in youtube videos shown fighting etc.

Then I find “Do-S” - a curvy blonde, very slim, huge breasts wearing a leather bondage S&M costume – tiny bits of leather covering nipples, costume basically bits of black leather held together with leather cords or metal, wearing thigh length costume with stiletto heels, leather dog collar with metal diamonds around neck, a muzzle on her face. (FOR F-S SAKE). (NOT THAT I AM REALLY HACKED OFF ABOUT THIS OR ANYTHING).

Ds says most of the kids in the class including girls are reading these books, or other mangas, which are marketed to children. The front cover is a young sweet looking normal boy and the blurb on the back is “boy hero fights for good” or something.

I am guessing parents and teachers see it is a cartoon and think nothing else of it.

The write up for these female characters is how powerful and strong they are – so this is the narrative girls are absorbing, that dressing like this is “powerful”. Goodness only knows what narratives the boys are absorbing.

This is basically child abuse, isn't it? Porn and grooming in plain sight?

I remember a comment on here where a mother said that books are not as bad as films but in fact clever writing paints a picture in the mind and can have a profound affect – positive or negative – and when I looked at the drawings I felt the same emotions and responses I would have to watching live porn.

This is also in video form on youtube. Apparently these books are in the town library and given to children without question.

I do not mind what other adults do, I am liberal as long as no one is being abused and that the adults are making choices, and as an adult I can decide not to look again, I was utterly disgusted and woke in the night feeling stressed about it, but I know that the effect on me will be minimal. Children do not have the same judgement, cannot handle the feelings related to adult sex stuff, cannot make choices, cannot foresee the sort of harm it could do them, without adult help. and I am assuming most of the adults are not aware of what they are looking at half the time and so children keep looking.

I really just cannot imagine the effect this is going to be having on all the children reading this sort of things regularly, the effect on how they treat each other in the future and what they would find “normal” and acceptable.
Children can't handle the feelings related to adult sex stuff, they can't put it in context or make choices or value judgements for themselves.

What with this and violent video games it is not surprising that mental health problems are spiralling, teens are filming each other in degrading ways and posting it online, violence against women and children ever increasing,is it?

Do people agree? It seems it is all over the place, this and similar things, and children feel that if they don't join in they will get left out.

The thing is that you have to understand Japanese Culture..... Comics (Manga) are incredibly popular over there and are produced on such volume that they are basically 'pulp'.
Regarding the visuals... What you complain about seems to be quite a common thing amongst the fantasy genre's in whatever form it takes. There is a lot of sexualisation of seemingly very young characters of indeterminate age.
This escapist fantasy stuff is EXTREMELY popular in Japan.
I've never got my head around the attraction of Japanese Comics, other than the artists ability to convey dynamism in a way that Western comics don't, but, it does have a popular following in the West. Regardless of your own personal feelings, you have to realize these aren't the Beano or Dandy ... Yes, the comics have some really strange and questionable titles, as well as some odd characters, but their comic culture is something that your child has embraced - You only have to goto a London Comic Convention to see how huge Japanese fandom is, and strangely it seems to be embraced an awful lot by those on the Autistic Spectrum.
Remember, they are growing up in a world that doesn't mirror yours. The forms of entertainment that they crave will be completely different to your own tastes.
Why not ask them why they like that particular comic?

IkaBaar · 09/11/2023 14:23

Is this a book provided by the school or the child themselves? Either way a good starting point would be to discuss it with the teacher?

Needmorelego · 09/11/2023 14:30

Most manga has age ratings printed on the cover.
Usually "All Ages", "13+", "Older Teen" and "Mature".
What is the rating on One Piece?
Secondary school libraries though have to cover age 11 -18 so some will be 13+ and Older Teen.

Do you as parents not sign something to say the children can have 'free reader' status?

My 14 yo is a free reader and because of the adult themes of the books in that section (she likes crime fiction) I had to sign a disclaimer.

If not - speak to school? Raise your concerns?

Needmorelego · 09/11/2023 14:39

I just checked. That volume of One Piece is rated "Teen" so your son isn't old enough to read it.
You should discuss with the school if they have any restrictions in the library to what books the Year 7s and 8s can read.
Tell your son he can't read the teen rated ones as he isn't old enough.
There 1000s of manga that are suitable for his age ("All Ages" on the cover)

Drayne · 09/11/2023 14:40

It sounds semi-pornographic and I agree with you about the grooming. It’s like saying your kid’s a free-reader therefore he’s allowed to look at top-shelf mags in the school library. Um, no!

Needmorelego · 09/11/2023 14:41

@Drayne what school library has "top shelf magazines" though?

Drayne · 09/11/2023 14:41

And school libraries should not be stocking pornographic imagery for anyone. You can’t just blindly go along with the age rating on the cover.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 09/11/2023 14:42

My niece is into this and has encouraged me to read OPM! But she is 26.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2023 14:43

@Drayne if it was "porn" it would be rated "Mature" or "Adult".

starborne · 09/11/2023 14:43

Not sure one punch man is marketed to children. It has an age rating, and if parents don't follow that then it's their fault not the creators of the Manga.

Drayne · 09/11/2023 14:44

The key thing I expect of a school library is some discernment around quality. If my kid wants to read DH Lawrence, fine. If he wants to read 50 shades of grey, no! Have some standards fgs. Manga is the lowest of the low imo and not suitable for school in any form.

Drayne · 09/11/2023 14:45

I’m saying the type of imagery is equivalent to a top-shelf magazine, therefore school should not stock it

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 09/11/2023 14:45

Jesus Christ. Just googled it. You are right OP. No way it this appropriate. Especially the Do-S character.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's porn or abusive but to me it is extremely inappropriate. So what if it's part of Japanese culture, you are not Japanese or in Japan. Every culture has its own ways, in Western culture this IS sexual and adult and should not be allowed in school.

FannyBawz · 09/11/2023 14:45

No use why any of that crap is in schools irrespective of age OP.

Id be firing an email off pronto

Drayne · 09/11/2023 14:47

@Drayne if it was "porn" it would be rated "Mature" or "Adult".

I would use my own judgment on this instead of waiting for the publisher to tell me what to think

BoohooWoohoo · 09/11/2023 14:52

https://www.viz.com/ratings

The rating seems to be a voluntary system created by the publisher and very vague compared to computer game or film ratings that are judged by an independent organisation.

The manga that you describe is definitely not ok for a year 7 imo- I would say that it shouldn't be available to year 11s either and doesn't belong in a school library. It is worrying that your local library have this book available to everyone too. I don't know if a message to your local councillor might help?

I think a lot of manga is ending up in the kids graphic novels section in public libraries at the moment because people see bright colours and cartoon pictures and assume comic books, which means it's being checked out by teens without any checks because as far as the library is concerned it's no different to things like the Amulet graphic novels or the Lumberjanes.

Definitely contact the school so the teachers can keep an eye on what is being read during free reading lessons, but it sounds like the material itself is being brought in from outside rather than picked up off the shelf in the classroom / school library. The teachers should hopefully be able to point them in the direction of some more age appropriate manga and brilliant graphic novels.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2023 15:12

@Drayne so you are ok with Lady Chatterley because it's a "classic" 🙄
There are 1000s of excellent, award winning and age appropriate manga books out there.
It's not "crap".

HorribleNecktie · 09/11/2023 15:21

I was looking at secondaries recently for DD and all of the libraries had a section for graphic novels and manga. I understand the reason as some kids simply will not read a conventional novel and comics are a way to get them reading. Manga and anime are also hugely popular (the live action series of One Piece on Netflix has also been very successful and brought that particular saga to a whole new audience).

But the content and artwork can be far too mature for kids, especially pre-teens, so the library should be carefully checking what is available. It is a delicate balance to strike as older kids often do like darker themes and more graphic stories.

JazbayGrapes · 09/11/2023 15:39

I'm in two minds about this. My oldest DS detested reading anything - he'd only pick up comics and graphic novels which weren't exactly age appropriate. So if it gets a kid to read anything at all - let them have it.
However, i'm pretty much aware how much anime/manga has influence the imaginary gender madness among young people.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 09/11/2023 15:46

Manga is a gateway to evil imo.

Pedophilia and grooming in plain sight.

That anyone thinks this ok for anyone, let alone children to read is a telling bloody indictment of how far downhill our society has fallen, and evidence that there is sadly worse to come.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 09/11/2023 15:54

What load of bollocks @Vintagecreamandcottagepie

"The gateway to evil." You sound like a total fruitcake.

Manga like ANY form of entertainment is age rated. It's a parent's responsibility to manage what their children have access to. Just like movies ratings go from XXX all the way to young child.

My daughter (13) loves her manga. She also reads horror books.

JazbayGrapes · 09/11/2023 15:54

Manga doesn't equal manga. There is stuff like Pokemon, and then there's hentai...

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 09/11/2023 15:56

@ForTheLoveOfSleep

Toddlers' heads on giant breasts in pornagraphic, mostly nude poses.

What's the harm eh?
