To think easyJet lied and ripped me off?

I flew with easyJet today. I had one cabin bag. Checked and double checked it was within the guidelines. Looked up the bag manufacturer to confirm. Went to the airport. It fit in the cage at check in but at the gate I was told it was oversized and I wouldn’t be able to board unless I paid £40.

I got to my destination and checked again and it fits perfectly! Customer service has been non existent and I am genuinely fuming.

I honestly think they used a smaller bag cage at the gate.

Pictures of said bag fitting with room to spare attached. (She said hopefully.)

That gauge is the underseat gauge. Your suitcase fits in it, you haven't had to push your bag in or squash it or anything like that so no YANBU and I would be asking for a refund.

Hawkins001 · 12/01/2023 16:36

all the best op

Poppyseed14 · 12/01/2023 16:37

YADNBU OP. When Easyjet changed their rules where the cabin bag must fit under the seat I purchased trolley cases on wheels from Amazon for this exact purpose and have never had an issue with using them. In fact if you look on Amazon many of these type cases will have in the description that they are compatible with Easyjet/Ryanair etc policy. PPs going on about small handbags and rucksacks aren't reading Easyjet's own policy which has been screenshotted several times on this thread. I'd try for a refund, you have nothing to lose.

EzyJetSux · 12/01/2023 16:37

I’m glad most people seem to agree.

What really angered me to be honest was it fit in the cage at check in but not at the gate. What’s that about? It’s like they are trying to catch people out.

Anyway, just arrived at the hotel. I wish you all a pleasant evening and will update if I get a refund.

If not, I am going to speak to the bank and request a chargeback.

Try not to let it ruin your trip OP xx

Applesandcarrots · 12/01/2023 16:39

If youtlr bag really fit, then request a refund and send pictures. Also maybe link to the page from manufacturer or seller where it states dimensions

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2023 16:26

If your bag is genuinely smaller than the limit, I agree that you've been charged incorrectly, but I do believe that the cages are actually larger than the limit (not sure what the point of that is) so your bag going in the cage isn't proof it's within the size limit.

Pointless cage

Thank you 😊 It definitely won’t. I might have exaggerated the title but I am mainly just peeved haha.

I'd be peeved too. But I wouldn't let it drop. Maybe fire them off a quick email and then you can forget about it for a while...

diddl · 12/01/2023 16:43

I take a small trolley case as being more like the type that pilots have rather than a suitcase that holds all your luggage for your stay iyswim.

That said if it fitted under the seat then it surely met the criteria!

Did you take a photo of it under the seat?

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 12/01/2023 16:47

When you're back from your trip I'd persue it. Try the guardian or those rip of Britain people.

Southwig22 · 12/01/2023 16:47

Wow lots of misinformation in this thread OP. Not sure why the PPs have decided they know the rules without even checking, despite them being clear on the easyJet site.

If your case is the dimensions you state, YANBU at all. I'd complain by email.

I know right. It's even written on the blimmin cage.

LordSugarTits · 12/01/2023 16:55

@PearTreeBoat they were wrong to charge the OP

PearTreeBoat · 12/01/2023 16:31

It is true, I work in aviation, although not for EasyJet.

when booking a ticket with them you have 3 options:
Standard - Includes one small under seat bag at 45x36x20cm
Stand Plus - Includes the small under seat bag plus carry-on at 56x45x25
Essentials - As Standard but also with 23Kg hold luggage

So they were right to charge you, though we all know their prices for these add on's at the gate are ridiculous

But her bag fits the description of the standard bag so why should she have been charged?

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 12/01/2023 16:52

That's what I was thinking is odd,

Frabbits · 12/01/2023 17:04

Your bag clearly fits inside the cage. It's not to the dotted line, it's the full cage.

If nothing else, how the fuck are you supposed to judge whether a bag inside an opaque cage is smaller than a dotted line printed on the outside of it? People are being stupid.

I would totally appeal that.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 12/01/2023 17:05

Do you also have a photo of the cage at the departure gate?

CottonSock · 12/01/2023 17:06

Easyjet have made a right arse of the new baggage charges with
New sizes. Going to avoid them if I can

caramellandscape · 12/01/2023 17:14

You could complain but I wouldn't count on getting your money back unless you threaten media/social media. Anytime I take easyjet/ryanair/etc I'm just prepared to stump up for the "rip off tax", as long as it's less than the difference compared to if I had taken a legit airline

SwishSwishBisch · 12/01/2023 17:16

Was the cage at the gate definitely an easyJet one? Maybe they pilfered one from the Kings of the Rip Off, Ryanair, which is why it suddenly didn’t fit?!
i’d definitely complain. You might get somewhere, you might not, but that’s so bloody cheeky of them

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2023 17:23

All the cages are in line with the airline's branding. It's definitely EJ, because it's orange. RA ones are blue/yellow.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 12/01/2023 17:41

Yes, you need to get onto customer service and appeal the charge.

The personal bag is the size you say, the carry on bag is bigger still (surprisingly large actually, if you measure it out)

Underseat baggage is described often as a small bag or rucksack, but they clearly give the dimensions, and that suitcase clearly fits them (and OP says fitted under the seat fine, so clearly the charge was a mistake)

Nosecan · 12/01/2023 17:45

I don’t know why people are arguing with you op! You clearly have it right.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/01/2023 17:50

I would never trust Easyjet again after they dumped and abandoned an entire plane load of passengers (including me) at Lyon airport instead of our destination, Geneva, and lying through their teeth throughout the whole process.
Everyone had to eventually make their own way to Geneva from Lyon, there were no other flights that day so it was train or taxi.
