To think easyJet lied and ripped me off?

I flew with easyJet today. I had one cabin bag. Checked and double checked it was within the guidelines. Looked up the bag manufacturer to confirm. Went to the airport. It fit in the cage at check in but at the gate I was told it was oversized and I wouldn’t be able to board unless I paid £40.

I got to my destination and checked again and it fits perfectly! Customer service has been non existent and I am genuinely fuming.

I honestly think they used a smaller bag cage at the gate.

Pictures of said bag fitting with room to spare attached. (She said hopefully.)

It was because they said it was too tall that I am focusing on that particular dimension.

It was 43 x 19 x 34.

Had you paid extra for an extra legroom seat or "up front" with quick boarding, where you get to go past the queue? Those are the only tickets where you're allowed a pull-along. With all other tickets you're only allowed a small rucksack or handbag, to fit under your seat.
We always book Quick boarding tickets and they never actually check the size of the pull-alongs (we make sure ours are within the dimensions but others bring much bigger ones - not a problem with premium / priority boarding tickets).

PearTreeBoat · 12/01/2023 16:22

45x36x20cm is the size for a small personal bag under the seat (i.e. handbag/small rucksack), the sizing for carry-on luggage and therefore the cage is 56x45x25cm.

Therefore they were right to charge you as you had a ticket for small personal under seat luggage but actually had carry-on luggage with you

roses2 · 12/01/2023 16:20

That's a chargeable bag. The free one is rucksack size.

Okay, but it fit in the cage and is smaller than it says on the website of 45 x 36 x 20 cm.

Is that the front of a two part gauge with the back part for the bigger cabin bag?

Did your bag fit under the seat as per the rules?

You could try emailing Easyjet with the photo and asking for a refund, but I wouldn't be confident about getting anywhere as they've got your money and none of these airlines really care about customer service, because enough people use them however badly they're treated.

I’m not sure this is true it just says 45 x 36 x 20 cm including wheels

How much did your bag weigh? It doesn't look as though it could fit under a seat either.

Yes it easy fit under the seat.

I'd feel hard done by as well if those are the dimensions but it does say it needs fit under the seat and let's face it your bag would not go under the seat. You could complain but maybe lesson learnt and next time take a back pack

Whalesong · 12/01/2023 16:26

No, you've misunderstood. Those are the official dimensions if you've paid extra for a pull-along cabin bag. If you haven't then it's not allowed, only a small rucksack or handbag. When you pay the upgrade for Quick boarding you get to bring both a pull-along which goes overhead, and a smaller bag which goes either overhead or under the seat in front.
The reason pull-along bags are only allowed with Quick boarding tickets is that they want all. those out of the way before everyone else boards, to avoid chaos and delays.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2023 16:26

If your bag is genuinely smaller than the limit, I agree that you've been charged incorrectly, but I do believe that the cages are actually larger than the limit (not sure what the point of that is) so your bag going in the cage isn't proof it's within the size limit.

It's clear in the instructions that that kind of bag (pull-along) is only allowed if you have a premium ticket.

FarFlungFlamingo · 12/01/2023 16:28

I'm not sure why so many people are saying the op has misunderstood - the sizes are clearly stated on easyjets website which the op has screenshottrd, it even lists small trolley case in the description for the small hand luggage. But like I said, people see trolley case and assume too big which is why I never risk it as not worth the aggro

I don’t think so it specifically says a small trolley case and mentions wheels on their website:

One small cabin bag
Maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm (including any handles or wheels)
Includes items like a small trolley case, handbag, rucksack and laptop bag, but please check dimensions
Needs to fit under the seat in front of you
Maximum weight 15kg. You need to be able to lift and carry the bag yourself

OP posts:
LordSugarTits · 12/01/2023 16:28

Do you have a link to the actual bag. We can't really see it there

Whalesong · 12/01/2023 16:27

It doesn’t though. See my above quote and screenshot that mentions trolley bags.

OP posts:
Bbqchicken · 12/01/2023 16:29

What type of ticket did you have?

budgiegirl · 12/01/2023 16:29

*Everyone can bring one small cabin bag per person on board for free.

It can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles or wheels) and needs to fit under the seat in front of you. That should be enough to bring all the essentials for your journey or for a short trip. Your bag can weigh up to 15kg, but we do ask that you’re able to lift and carry it yourself.*

This is from the Easyjet website. As it mentions wheels, it suggests that a small pull-along is fine, as long as it fits within the dimensions, which yours appears to do. I think you should raise this as a complaint, and try to get a refund.

No, you've misunderstood. Those are the official dimensions if you've paid extra for a pull-along cabin bag. If you haven't then it's not allowed, only a small rucksack or handbag

Not according to the current information on the Easyjet website. Nowhere does it say that the small cabin bag (that everyone is allowed) can only be a certain style.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2023 16:29

For those who aren't getting it, 43 x 19 x 34 is smaller than 45x36x20cm and the EJ website clearly says that a small trolley case is allowed, as long it is small enough. And the OP has confirmed that it fit under her seat, as required.

I know that most of the time in these sorts of cases, the OP has tried and failed to bend the rules but I think for once that they've been treated unfairly and should complain.

It is true, I work in aviation, although not for EasyJet.

when booking a ticket with them you have 3 options:
Standard - Includes one small under seat bag at 45x36x20cm
Stand Plus - Includes the small under seat bag plus carry-on at 56x45x25
Essentials - As Standard but also with 23Kg hold luggage

So they were right to charge you, though we all know their prices for these add on's at the gate are ridiculous

BlueRabbitWasNaughty · 12/01/2023 16:31

Is nobody reading the OP?

Her bag was small enough to fit under the seat as per her ticket. I think you should complain as a matter of principle (but I'm not sure how easy it will be).

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2023 16:31

From: www.easyjet.com/en/help/baggage/cabin-bag-and-hold-luggage

All customers can bring on board:

One small cabin bag
Maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm (including any handles or wheels)
Includes items like a small trolley case, handbag, rucksack and laptop bag, but please check dimensions
Needs to fit under the seat in front of you

If you have a picture of it under the seat then maybe email them and request a refund?

Bramshott · 12/01/2023 16:33

You've definitely been charged incorrectly OP if your case including wheels is the size you've said. We've taken a small wheely case on Easyjet with the new rules without issue (retailers now even sell these smaller cases for exactly this reason).

Did you happen to take a picture of it happily fitting underneath the seat? I'd definitely appeal.

Are you sure about that?

Do you work at the gate, charging people for non chargeable bags, which they feel pressured to pay, otherwise they'll not be allowed to board?
