To ask about periods stopping

I am 52. Had very light periods for the last 5 years with increasingly large gaps in between. I have just come on today, full blown, heavier than when I was 13 style period. Last one - also stupidly heavy - was May and I had a very light showing for about 48 hours in November.

Is this how periods stop? Do they seem to come and go for a few years in this way? Is there anything to be concerned about with the heaviness?

It was a similar scenario for me.

My periods were light with varying number of days between them, anything from 21 days up to 90+ days so I thought they'd just fizzle out as I've never really had heavy bleeds. Then I had a couple of really heavy ones with flooding, then possibly one more that was more of a smear than anything.

Since then nothing. That was 3 years ago.

Very similar here, too. Increasingly light periods, then one which actually put me in bed in absolute agony for a couple of days - and that had NEVER happened before. Never had another period since! That was 12 years ago.

My periods just stopped. I was plodding along with regular monthly periods. Heavy, but had been for years due to fibroids.

I had no idea I was that near menopause, although, in hindsight, I was having problems sleeping and the occasional night sweat.

I think I had a gap of 3 months with no period, then one, then nothing ever again. I was surprised as I had assumed they would continue intermittently for a year or so. I guess everyone is different.
