What does this country have going for it? UK

Sorry if this is a goady thread, but with the awful weather we have had for weeks, the astronomical electricity prices, the uncaring and mismanaging government, an NHS that is absolutely crumbling despite those working in it giving their body and soul to the job, locked down borders where we can no longer as easily work, travel and live in 20 something countries, could people please help with positives of this country. I'm feeling like all my pride and patriotism has vanished.

Which country would you like to move to?

Kitkatcatflap · 11/01/2023 16:27

8 years ago I moved from London. To Sweden with my Swedish DH and kids. Every day I miss London and would move back in a heartbeat. You don't know what you've got till it's gone

hoppityscotch · 11/01/2023 16:28

We are quite good at queueing

That is a good point. What specifically do you miss?

You can't blame winter weather on government 😂

I actually like the weather - hear me out. We have a largely temperate climate not given to extremes - I'd hate to live in parts of the US where they have hurricane season and have to go and hide in the basement.

Most people are honest and decent - just look at how few Police we have and yet crime isn't rampant in most places.

Aside from the current government we have a relatively low level of corruption.

We have a massive amount of history and museums and some stunning countryside and coastline.

Although it's under threat, we have a lot of freedoms and free speech.

icefishing · 11/01/2023 16:34

I don't live in the UK anymore but I miss the history and countryside of the UK.
Food is pretty decent and comparatively cheap even now.
It is close to travel to Europe even post Brexit.

Yes even if someone is angry and otherwise a right pain in the bum they will usually stand at the back of a queue when they join it

Don’t be an idiot OP.

Music

Culture including being self deprecating and sarcasm

National parks

Architecture

Pear shaped women
Fair hair and eye colour

Creativity

Comms / literature / memes / humour

Free services eg library, some nhs, free school meals

Less corruption than other countries eg the Covid vaccine corruption was in news for months - wouldn't even make press or even be known in other countries

Keyansier · 11/01/2023 16:39

Which country would you like to move to, OP, that you feel is superior? I asked early on in the thread but you dodged the question even though you managed to answer later replies...

Fairyliz · 11/01/2023 16:40

In addition to the things mentioned above, we let whiny people have an online platform where they can complain about anything at all and blame everything on the government (ring any bells op? ).
In some countries these people mysteriously disappear.

Yeahrightthen · 11/01/2023 16:41

I think our country has its problems like every country. You choose your difficulties.

Like, I’m very low at the moment due to the weather - always get like this in winter - but it is preferable to say, moving to Oz as id also be miserable in 100 degree heat and having to drive from air conditioned place to air conditioned place. Plus I hate applying sunscreen!

So I just put up with it and moan until March -time!

According to something I heard on the radio the other day we're not even particularly good at that Confused apparently it was wartime propaganda designed to maintain order!

Pear shaped women

I am so happy to read this - my small boobs and large derrière is a positive reason for living in this country? Brilliant!

I agree with this. There is nothing as good as the British sense of humour or British music. Plus when it is sunny it's beautiful.

For a small island we have a lot going for us (leaving politics aside).

PermanentTemporary · 11/01/2023 16:44

I love living here.

My first date with DP was a walk on the Ridgway. We parked in the National Trust car park, said hello and walked up the hill to the White Horse of Uffington and Wayland's Smithy. We wandered on with the cloud shadows rolling over us and the occasional shower of rain freshening the grass. We stopped for a picnic just looking out at the huge valley views. We were on a path that has been travelled as long as humans have been here, with the chalk and the close cropped turf underfoot. I like to think our first kiss was on a ley line [old hippy emoticon] The other people on the hill minded their own business and pretended not to notice us snogging madly. They were mildly lumpy unglamorous types out for family walks with dogs. Every group was telling jokes and laughing (not about us).

Mild weather, seasons, collective organisations for the public good, the chalk hills, the green and pleasant. There's plenty wrong with the culture here but there's plenty right with it too.

RudsyFarmer · 11/01/2023 16:44

I guess I just see this country as the place I was born and live. I don’t require it to have ‘anything going for it’. I just live here

hoppityscotch · 11/01/2023 16:44

Why are you so keen on getting this information? Is it so you can list all the negatives you can think of for whichever country she chooses by any chance?

OP is clearly feeling low about the world around her so this type of reply is really uncalled for, why not reply with something you find positive about the country instead of sticking the boot in?
