Sorry if this is a goady thread, but with the awful weather we have had for weeks, the astronomical electricity prices, the uncaring and mismanaging government, an NHS that is absolutely crumbling despite those working in it giving their body and soul to the job, locked down borders where we can no longer as easily work, travel and live in 20 something countries, could people please help with positives of this country. I'm feeling like all my pride and patriotism has vanished.

Ah well. An educated guess on why is to look at what they wish to do asylum seekers. Remove rights of appeal.

The ECHR was written by British Government lawyers to stop racist ideology being law. So that you could not target particular groups. You could not, for example, decide that because someone is not British, they have different or lesser rights.

Of course, now you have a group of nationalist politicians and some very stupid people who think British is something you can qualify for. That isn't what nationalism means. It means you have to show that you are one of the chosen few. That tends to be very very racist when you get down to it.

We are in a more precarious position than many people realize. I was at the Holocaust Exhibition at the IWM the other day. When I read the bios of the main SS Officers which focused on what gave them the fire in their belly which led them to join (and eventually lead) the Nazi Party, some of their explanations sounded scarily contemporary.

I can see that many did not necessarily set out to create the monster but it was the coming together of individual grievances, exclusionary ideologies and unrealistic nostalgia about rewinding back to the good ol' days which produced the destructive force we all know about.

Well that's another interpretation of the Holocaust 🙄

It’s habeas corpus for me. The country I was born and brought up in didn’t have it, neither did the one I lived in recently for a couple of years for work. It’s easy to take the UK for granted if you’re lucky enough not have experienced anything different.

LexMitior · 06/02/2023 11:26

Yes well if you suspend the ECHR and have to be British to have habeus corpus, which looks like a key priority for this Government, then there will be whole communities in the U.K. in some serious trouble. They will not have the same rights unless a kindly judge agrees with their case. Very different

The UK is ranked behind Estonia and Uraguay on the Corruption Perceptions Index.

We currently have our lowest ever score.

Less corruption than other countries eg the Covid vaccine corruption was in news for months - wouldn't even make press or even be known in other countries

Ah yes Pubs.

Pubs and Queuing

The thwack of leather on willow on the green, the vicar on his bicycle being chased by the buxom district nurse’s dog, the faded copies on ‘People’s Friend’ in the windows of the village shop, the peal of bells welcoming the faithful to Church on a Sunday. The flogging given to the choir boys on their bare buttock by the choir master when they sing out of key and the soothing salve applied by the vicar to make it all better. The bus conductors and the village gardeners doffing their caps as the squire drunkenly rides past in his Bentley. The processions of squires’ maids surreptitiously purchasing gin and coat hangers on their half day off to not displease her ladyship. The treasures of the world looted and placed in the village museum with lovingly arranged anthropological monographs detailing the quaint customs of fuzzy wuzzy.

This sceptur’d Isle, this throne of Kings, This England.
