To get rage when people use xx months with their child's age

Dinoswearunderpants · 11/01/2023 15:42

Slightly lighthearted but it also rages me. Just seen a thread on here stating their '12 month old'. The child is 1! Another I read today '25 month old' so that's a 2 year old then.

Why do parents do it? I literally have to calculate the months as I simply have a 'nearly 2 year old' (birthday in April).

Does it bother anyone else? What simple things do you see that give you slight rage?

24 month rule! If you say you have a 31 month old nobody's going to have a clue

Nobody? Nobody can work out that it’s 7 months past 2and 5 months before 3?

Oh you got me there.

No, nobody cares to calculate 36-x months to figure out your child's age

poppetposieandfun · 11/01/2023 20:05

I agree, up to age 2 it makes perfect sense but after that, it isn't necessary.

I have two friends who count their 4 and 5 year olds by months. They are 49 months and 64 months respectively. Both only have 1 child, they aren't siblings. Before them I'd never known someone do this! They don't know each other, so it isn't that they are copying one another! LOL

LlynTegid · 11/01/2023 20:07

Better not mention the 1160 month old former controller of BBC 2 David Attenborough to the OP then!!

I agree. Its months until you get to 1. I don't need to know if they're 13 months or 21 months. They're still 1.

If sometime is asking advice about their 1 year old not walking the advice is going to be totally different for a 13 month old vs 21 months.
The same with anything related to their development, there’s too much of a range to just say 1. A 1 year old could still be a blobby baby rolling around on the floor not able to walk or even say mama and that is alarming or not alarming depending on the specific age.

TheGoogleMum · 11/01/2023 20:24

Depends on situation but generally until 2 months might make most sense as they develop so much in a short time! I don't think there's as much need for months after that.

I once saw someone refer to their 11 year old in terms of months, to show that they were still so young.

Lol!!!

My 11 year old thinks she's about 17!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/01/2023 20:42

There was a woman locally who referred to her child's age in weeks until he was about 3. It was really bizarre.

Ryin · 11/01/2023 20:50

My DD is turning 169 months tomorrow 🤣🤣

Acceptable under 2 years I say. The age and units of time I think make sense are
<1 day - hours
<2 weeks - days
<3 months - weeks
<2 years - months
<5 years - half years.

I think it's because I use the 24 hour clock without thinking about it. So the maths that translates 20 months to 12 + 8 is instinctual. Whereas 25 months + I have to think about it and actually work it out. So anything under 24 months fine, over 24 months instantly not!

This is very pleasing. I'm going to adopt this system, thank you!!

UsingChangeofName · 11/01/2023 21:06

YABU.
As so many have pointed out, there is a huge difference between a 12 month old and a 23month old.
If knowing the age of a child is important then it needs to be fairly accurate.

Isthisexpected · 11/01/2023 15:45

Hey? Surely you know a 13 month old cannot do/eat/move/think/express themselves the same as a 23 month old.

Translation
A 1 year old is less developed than a 2 year old.

I'm with the OP.

Cuppasoupmonster · 11/01/2023 21:18

Ok so say ‘2y8m’ then!!! Everyone knows what you mean by that, rather than fannying around with 32 months and making people do mental division. YANBU!

porpy · 11/01/2023 21:19

I am my mums 360-month-old 😇

LikeTearsInRain · 11/01/2023 21:27

Why does my 16 month old make you rage?

I would seek therapy or an anger management course if I were you

Wednesday6 · 11/01/2023 21:28

I think these parents are subscribed to notifications on their kids development milestones or some other apps that tell them the age in months. So they just assume that's how people communicate age

Mariposista · 11/01/2023 21:37

OMG yes this gives me the ick big time.
No joke, someone once told me her baby was 32 weeks old. I walked away, gave a massive eye roll and said to my friend 'so in other words he is 8 months old? Are you also going to give the number of days and hours of your kid?' how much time on your hands do you have? hahahaha

TheFrozenCanal · 11/01/2023 21:45

Someone asked me how old ds was recently and I said "one". It killed the conversation.

I'm with the OP.

But a one year old is one until their second birthday same with a two year old someone asking advice on speech or potty training the age of 30 months,24 months or 35 months all makes a difference which is why the EYFS prior to the last update looked at age ranges in months up to 5 years.

Cuppasoupmonster · 12/01/2023 05:32

But why not just say 2y3m or whatever? Why all the 27 month nonsense?

Was your friend too polite to say, it’s 7 months, actually! (7.5 to be precise).

Yes, why just use 2 words, when 4 would do?

goldennotyetoldie · 12/01/2023 08:14

@jannier yes it does matter for health professionals, but most parents aren't, and they are using the months in normal conversation. It's weird.

Wait so you walked away from someone, rolled your eyes and talked about her?

That's pretty rude, no matter how she chose to express the age.

Sartre · 13/01/2023 15:44

I don’t mind it under the age of two because there’s a huge difference between 12 and 20 months so it makes sense. Anything over two is weird though.
