How many hours a week do you work?

I work an absolute maximum of 40, usually 37/38. I refuse to go over 40, I've done this in the past. I wish I could go down to part-time but I can't afford to financially like many people.
I know people who do 50-70 hour weeks and no idea how. Even now I don't always feel like I have enough free time, and I don't have children or anything.
I had a community care job a couple of years ago in which I lacked the confidence to say no and they took full advantage of me, I was out from 7am-9pm several days in a row until I started speaking up.
Also, how long is your working day?
I used to do 12 hour shifts in a care home and found it far too long. Some people do 5 of these in a row and I've no idea how they get the time to do anything else like cooking or cleaning. I've gone down to 6 hour shifts, people have commented that I seem to have a lot of energy, but I find them a breeze now after doing 12h.

About three days. Self employed.

notmaryberry · 11/01/2023 08:41

37.5 hours a week. I don’t generally go over this, sometimes, but it’s within my power to choose to do that or not. I work 9-5 with 30 min lunch.

Woahtherehoney · 11/01/2023 08:43

I’m employed to work 35 hours a week but most weeks work over that - I am lucky I work from home so can be flexible and I have a DSS who we have for 4 days a week so can work around him as much as possible. I average around 40/42 hours a week most weeks.

knitfastdieyoung · 11/01/2023 08:44

3 days a week at moment (still have primary aged DS.) But also do pockets of freelance work here and there to bump income.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 11/01/2023 08:49

20 hours in one job over four days, but leave the house at 8 and get back at 4. I have a 90 min commute each way thanks to crappy public transport. It’d cost 20% of my wages to drive in and park which would be 20 mins each way but not feasible.

The other day I work 2-8 hours doing the admin and general sorting for the business DH and I own together.

GoneToday · 11/01/2023 08:52

About 20hrs contact time and then some admin on top (managing my diary, writing reports). Self employed.

OatFox · 11/01/2023 08:53

37.5 are my contracted hours. In my sector there's rarely a need to go over unless we've asked for overtime. I work 8:30-5 with an hour for lunch.

Sloth66 · 11/01/2023 08:53

21 hours over 3 days

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/01/2023 08:53

37.5, from home. Totally flexible but generally 8-5 with a break to collect dc from school.

Holeinthetoad · 11/01/2023 08:54

2 x 12 hour nights and 2 x 3 hour days so 30. It’s the perfect balance for me

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 11/01/2023 08:54

About 30 hours. I'm self employed and could do more but I'm happy with my income and work/life balance the way it is.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 11/01/2023 08:55

Oh and that's roughly six hours a day - 8.30-2.30ish.

InMySpareTime · 11/01/2023 08:56

1 hour a week, but not every week. Self employed but my disability means I can't work much.

TheChosenTwo · 11/01/2023 08:56

Contracted to 35 hours and I work pretty much exactly that. Some days I work a bit extra, other days I knock off a bit early or take a longer lunch break.
Really happy with my work/life balance at the moment.

Sunshineandflipflops · 11/01/2023 08:57

37.5. I work 7.30am - 5.15pm 4 days a week.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 11/01/2023 08:57

Anything from 35 to 60+ depending on how much there is to do/time of year!

CrapBucket · 11/01/2023 08:57

Mid 40s... I have a full time job 37.5 hours plus a couple of part-time extra jobs. Though the full time job could very easily take up every minute of every day and I would still be behind.

mrsed1987 · 11/01/2023 08:58

22.5 hours I'm paid for.

I used to work much more than that (paperwork and meetings sometimes on my days off) but after just recently returning after having a bereavement, I've decided I'm not going to put myself through that anymore unless it is something I really can't get out of.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 11/01/2023 08:59

On a good week between 45-50 hours can often exceed that. Contracted to do 37. WFH good part of the week which helps and will generally log off for a couple of hours 6-8pm for some time with my DD and then will log back on to get some work done in the evening. I work in public sector.

BiddyPop · 11/01/2023 09:00

Officially I do a 37.5 hr week.

I don't think I've actually done those hours since my first few weeks over 20 years ago. I've had periods when 60+ was not unusual (even 80+ at 2 different stages, both were relatively short-lived and necessary though). I have tried to keep it close to 40 more recently, but it's still usually at least 45-50 range.

But not only do I mostly like what I do, I can see that if I get through what HAS to be done, I can also make progress on the things that COUlD be done and those are the things that have the potential to make a massive positive impact int he longer term on many others (not directly on me). So I want to get to those coulds if I can.

TreeMate · 11/01/2023 09:02

40 hours a week over 5 days, with 30 min lunch break. I WFH 1 day a week and am out and about with different clients the other 4 days, so I also get a chance to have a coffee break, nip to the shops or run errands etc between clients.
Rarely work beyond my hours.

I recently changed careers from a school job where I was working on-site 50 hours a week and taking work home which probably added up to 60 hours a week. So my new role feels like bliss!

SherbetDips · 11/01/2023 09:03

50 hours a week, I am a nanny.

Phos · 11/01/2023 09:03

I do 28 hours a week but spread it across 5 days so I have some early finishes to do the school run. I’m very protective of this so except on rare occasions I don’t go over my allotted hours. Luckily my employer doesn’t expect anyone to do this. I think in some teams it might be different but if I’m seen to be online at an unusual time, I will be asked about it (not in a hostile way, more checking in)

Beezknees · 11/01/2023 09:06
  1. I can work flexibly between the hours of 8am-6pm. I usually finish around 2pm on Fridays. My salary is £21k so no way am I doing 50 hour weeks for that!
WhenDovesFly · 11/01/2023 09:07

40 hours a week, 9-5. No proper break for lunch (or any other time) as we have to cover phones at all times and me and my colleagues are lone workers in our branches.
