How many hours a week do you work?

I work an absolute maximum of 40, usually 37/38. I refuse to go over 40, I've done this in the past. I wish I could go down to part-time but I can't afford to financially like many people.
I know people who do 50-70 hour weeks and no idea how. Even now I don't always feel like I have enough free time, and I don't have children or anything.
I had a community care job a couple of years ago in which I lacked the confidence to say no and they took full advantage of me, I was out from 7am-9pm several days in a row until I started speaking up.
Also, how long is your working day?
I used to do 12 hour shifts in a care home and found it far too long. Some people do 5 of these in a row and I've no idea how they get the time to do anything else like cooking or cleaning. I've gone down to 6 hour shifts, people have commented that I seem to have a lot of energy, but I find them a breeze now after doing 12h.

Get in to the office around 8.30am and leave around 7pm, Monday to Friday. I do take a full hour for lunch though and browse mumsnet on and off during the day

I also work some part days on Saturdays, so all in all I probably do around 50 hours a week.

I saw the other day that I have 24 years left until my state pension. There is no way I can keep that up for that long!

QforCucumber · 11/01/2023 09:54

Everyone in our office is contracted to 35 hours or fewer..

Director set up the business 20 years ago with the aim to create a family friendly firm and is of the belief that if you can't get the work required done in the time given then we either need to review processes or hire more staff - it works and our staff turnover is very low.

JaceLancs · 11/01/2023 09:54

Officially 37 but I probably do around 50

SmileWithADimple · 11/01/2023 09:57

30 hours a week (0.8 FTE). I try not to do more than that and generally succeed.

2chocolateoranges · 11/01/2023 10:02

I work 30hrs which is perfect. Monday -Friday.

used to work 40 hours but changed companies dropped hours and earning 2.5k more for 10 less hours a week.

bippityboppity87 · 11/01/2023 10:16

I have a disability so I only work part time now, but I used to be full time, roughly 38 hours a week, anywhere between 10 hours and 6 hour days (shift work) but I just couldn't do it anymore. Then with a young DS on top, it would just be too much for me

I now work 16 hours/2 days a week. So much better! Thankfully I'm lucky I am able to do this, but I also receive PIP and ESA, which helps

pleaseandthankyou45 · 11/01/2023 10:17

2 days self employed

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 11/01/2023 10:19

Technically contracted for 37.5 but I work however many hours it takes to get the job done. Sometimes that's 50, sometimes it's 30, my hrs are completely flexible, i WFH and have colleagues all over the world so often have Teams calls late evening and then start at 11 the next day.

PaperMonster · 11/01/2023 10:21

12 hours employed. About the same self employed, it varies.

PrincessConstance · 11/01/2023 10:25

Up to 70 hrs.

Goosefatroasts · 11/01/2023 10:27

13 hours a week and it’s still a drain. Hate working.

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 11/01/2023 10:30

15 hours over three days one week and 20 over 4 days the alternate week. It's works well for my life in terms of hours but the reality is that I cram the same amount of work in to those days as I did when working full time 40 hours over 5 and I often take some meetings and things in my days off. All for less than half the pay.
Therefore considering going back to full time.

I ‘retired’ from my career in medicine, but got bored just doing nothing all day.

Did a good number of years as a writer (theatre reviews, not a DM journalist) but Covid meant my editor in chief took all the best gigs after Covid restrictions were lifted, and I was effectively redundant.

Currently I’m enjoying running a small but unbelievably successful B & B and it literally takes less than 2 hours a day from my life and pays enough for me to have a Hawaiian trip this summer.

Im virtually mortgage free and I’m 60 years old. I worked 50+ hours a week when my children were younger because I was the main breadwinner, until I found my first husband was screwing the local Italian tart! There’s a reason my kids still call her limoncello cheesecake.

I really don’t know what you’re hoping for from this question. Are you working for the Daily Mail?

When you’re young, you need to work lots of hours or work in a great paying job to afford mortgage, car, holidays, paying into your pension and everything else.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 11/01/2023 10:33

48.75 whatever that means . It's effectively 50 hour a week. I can't go under those hours but I certainly don't go over by much . At worst an extra 1/2 hour some weeks but definitely no more.
I get Saturday daytime off where I get all my washing and drying done before working Saturday evenings and sundays I do absolutely fuck all . Not even getting dressed
Thankfully family members help with house work . I do the majority of the cooking though

fromdownwest · 11/01/2023 10:40

I run my own business, and operate between 8am and 8pm. It is not flat out during that time, and I do include a dog walk. However, I would say on average 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. So 50 hours

mrsbyers · 11/01/2023 10:51

37 compressed into 4 days so I have every Wednesday off

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/01/2023 10:54

Contracted for 35 hours. I will do 35 hours and not a second more.

Tdcp · 11/01/2023 10:56

I do 42, including commuting I'm out around 52 hours a week.

Krakenes · 11/01/2023 10:57

40-50 over 4.5 days. My husband and I split Mondays so we only have to send our toddler to nursery 4 days a week. My husband does similar hours.

SittingInSunshine · 11/01/2023 10:57

37.5 and I stick to it. Log in at 9 and off at 5.

I do waste a bit of time online during the day though.

Baconand · 11/01/2023 10:59

Paid to do 30, rarely do any extra. Senior Manager public sector with nothing to prove!
The FTE salary is around £55-60k so not mega bucks though.

thismeansnothing · 11/01/2023 11:01

27.75 over 3 nights

DuchessOfDisco · 11/01/2023 11:04

24hrs over 3 days in my employees role. I think work around 6-7hrs a week freelance/self-employed. I find that’s the perfect balance for me because when I was full time employed I was burnt out, but full time freelance I was lonely.

AnxietyGirl8 · 11/01/2023 11:05

I work 28 hours over 4 days.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/01/2023 11:06

25 hours over 3.5 days per week.
