How many hours a week do you work?

I work an absolute maximum of 40, usually 37/38. I refuse to go over 40, I've done this in the past. I wish I could go down to part-time but I can't afford to financially like many people.
I know people who do 50-70 hour weeks and no idea how. Even now I don't always feel like I have enough free time, and I don't have children or anything.
I had a community care job a couple of years ago in which I lacked the confidence to say no and they took full advantage of me, I was out from 7am-9pm several days in a row until I started speaking up.
Also, how long is your working day?
I used to do 12 hour shifts in a care home and found it far too long. Some people do 5 of these in a row and I've no idea how they get the time to do anything else like cooking or cleaning. I've gone down to 6 hour shifts, people have commented that I seem to have a lot of energy, but I find them a breeze now after doing 12h.

37.5. I'm not paid for more and don't intend to progress in this field anyway.

PatternsGrowCircular · 11/01/2023 12:52

6x12 hours
6 on, 6 off
Days & nights

With some shift changes to provide cover for holiday, sickness, training, overtime & other

Moxysright · 11/01/2023 12:54

21 hours a week currently which is 3 days. I’m going back full time which is 35 hours/ 5 days this summer.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 11/01/2023 12:55

I'm contracted for 37, normally do 39ish

Aloezebra · 11/01/2023 13:02

16 over 2/3 days. I also do a full time degree

Wakeywake · 11/01/2023 13:08

Contracted for 37.5. In practice I do about 48 (8-6 with half an hour lunch break). It can be more during really busy periods, it can be a bit less sometimes. I work mostly from home and it's very manageable.

Raspberry290 · 11/01/2023 13:12

9-5 three times a week, it’s a dream

Isis1981uk · 11/01/2023 13:12

37.5 hours over 5 days - I refuse to do any more due to childcare limitations, and because I think the expectation of more than 40 hours a week is somehow acceptable (unless you genuinely want to!) is unhealthy. I work to live rather than live to work.

Ididnthityouharold · 11/01/2023 13:15

Thanks for your replies!
No I definitely don't work for the DM :)
I wish I could go down to PT , but I need to be bringing in at least £1800 net per month sadly

22.5hr over three days. NHS. Don't work a second of unpaid overtime, nor is it ever expected of us. On the very rare occasion we do run over we take it back in TOIL.

Kolakalia · 11/01/2023 13:20

I worked 80hr per week for ten months during part of my MA and it was horrendous. I thought I'd be okay, and I got through it, but I really wasn't. Unsurprisingly my body got very upset with it, I got all kinds of colds, chest infections, bladder infections, migraines because I wasn't getting enough rest or sleep. I would often work 9am until midnight with an hour's break to drive, get home at midnight and write essays until 2am. By Wednesday evening every week I'd already worked 15hr. I couldn't sustain that longterm, it was insane. Glad I did it though as it was the only way I could lift myself out of poverty into a profession/better paying job/career.

SkippyKangeroo · 11/01/2023 13:26

35 hrs, with 2.5 hrs commute on top of that 4 days a week.

Public transport is terrible where I am so a 9 - 5 job means I'm out of the house 07:30 - 18.30

And they wonder why staff are clambering for hybrid working. I literally get 2.5 hrs of my life back on my wfh day.

bridgetreilly · 11/01/2023 13:26

30 hours over 4 days.

Titsywoo · 11/01/2023 13:26

Depends on the time of year. At the moment around 40. In my quiet period (Feb to May) probably 30 hours but in the busy season from August to Dec more like 50-60. I run my own business.

EarlyYearsMe · 11/01/2023 13:28

50- I’m not very happy with work life balance, I seem to do more for other people’s families than my own 😑 aim is to address that this year

CharChar91 · 11/01/2023 13:31

Two children age 5 (reception) and 4 (pre-school). I work 30 hours a week over 4 days, I have Friday off to do most of the housework, shopping etc.
Fiance currently works ridiculous hours up to 80 a week but we're both fed up of it. He's applying for jobs which are more 9-5 but he'll be bringing in less money so I'll probably pick up a couple of evening shifts at a pub or something if I can to bring up our income a bit. He'll be around more to help with children/household stuff so I don't mind working extra.

Just imagine a string of numbers between 0 and 100. Some true. Some false.

Of course, that won't get you the attention (replies) you are seeking.

Why do you say that?

40 hours a week contractually but in reality i work 8 to 6 and 2-3 hours most nights on top of that and sometimes a few hours over the weekend. Public sector child protection worker

Blanketenvy · 11/01/2023 13:37

22.5 hrs spread over 4 days. Also on average 3 hours freelance a week. No kids but have a long term condition so can't manage to work any more hours.

Maverickess · 11/01/2023 13:39

Contract is 40, anything up to 45 some weeks and more rarely around 38.
Depends on what's going on and the time of year and they're flexible as in they expect you to stay/come in early/cover if you're needed and go over your hours one week, but also not bothered if you leave a couple of hours early when you're not needed another.
It usually balances out though.

InFiveMins · 11/01/2023 13:49

37.5 hours over 5 days. I'm happy with that.

Montague22 · 11/01/2023 13:55

34 flexibly over 4 days. 3 kids. No family help. I don’t think I could do more, youngest is 5.

OneForTheRoadThen · 11/01/2023 14:01

Rebel2023 · 11/01/2023 14:05
