Wonder when it will be if it happens.

They have to give 2 weeks notice of any strike dates so I would expect some dates across Feb and March to start with.

Violashift · 12/01/2023 16:09

Are we banned from striking?

The Tories introduced legislation that states you must meet two thresholds to carry out industrial action- you must get more than 50% of your membership to vote and then a majority of those vote yes, which must mean at least 40% of your membership vote yes.

NASUWT only got 42% of their membership to vote, which means they haven't met the threshold for strike action in state schools.

The legislation was designed to make it harder for strikes to happen in public sector. The Government also refuses to allow trade unions to use online voting, despite the fact all political parties use online voting for their own internal elections.

TheZeppo · 12/01/2023 16:52

@TorviShieldMaiden where did you get your stats from please (regarding NASUWT vote).

Im surprised (and frankly appalled!) the turn out was so low!

jcyclops · 12/01/2023 16:56

The 50% participation rule for strike ballots applies to both public and private sectors. If this condition is met then usually, a simple majority is required for strike action.
For important public services, there is a second test that 40% of eligible participants must vote for a strike. This applies to those working in six sectors: health services, fire services, transport services, the education of those under the age of 17, decommissioning of nuclear installations and management of radioactive waste and spent fuel, and border security.

Thanks @jcyclops

I am utterly disgusted by the apathy of the NASUWT membership.

WeAreAllLionesses · 12/01/2023 17:20

That clipping is disingenuous - it wasn't 9/10 of their members, it was 9/10 of the 42% who voted - that is the important bit.

Wonder how the other unions will vote.

Moonshine86 · 12/01/2023 17:36

This has really surprised me.

Yellowgreenpurple · 12/01/2023 17:47

It doesn’t surprise me. I think most teachers join a union for legal protection rather than to get involved with these sorts of issues. I’m not saying that’s right, but I just don’t think there’s much of an appetite for industrial action.

ilovesooty · 12/01/2023 18:08

Most of them evidently don't understand what a union is and don't care.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 18:10

well, the union was plain stupid to organise a postal ballot during a postal strike

LucyWhipple · 12/01/2023 18:17

Gosh this has really surprised me.

Though historically NASUWT has been the least militant of the teaching unions (part of the reason I joined it though I did vote for strike action this time). Will be very interesting to see what happens with NEU & especially NAHT.

Yellowgreenpurple · 12/01/2023 18:39

Quite a few teachers are saying they didn’t receive their ballots.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 18:42

actually, I am not even sure that the NASUWT even exists

Tarrarra · 12/01/2023 18:46

My ballot paper from NASUWT came really late, and I wonder how many papers are lost in the postal system somewhere? I think that bearing in mind Christmas cards are still v trickling through, that they should have extended the deadline. It will be interesting whether NEU will the threshold.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 12/01/2023 18:47

I'm NASUWT, voted and also received three postal encouragements after the first ballot as well as a phonecall to see if I'd got my vote in! Disappointing.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 18:52

sorry, my mistake, its the nUT that doesnt exist now, its merged

Curioushorse · 12/01/2023 18:57

Our union rep said the rumour is NEU hasn't made the required numbers either.
