Anyone know results of teachers strike?

The ballot closed yesterday but has anyone heard the results?

Is it tomorrow that’s published?

Our union rep said the rumour is NEU hasn't made the required numbers either.

I'm fucking glad I'm no longer teaching with these spineless, useless fuckers.

Yellowgreenpurple · 12/01/2023 19:01

There are a lot on Twitter saying that they didn’t receive a ballot.

Metabigot · 12/01/2023 19:04

Ironic that (probably) as a result of the postal strike this has the effect that other strikes go unheard as members can't get their ballot papers

MrsHamlet · 12/01/2023 19:09

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 18:10

well, the union was plain stupid to organise a postal ballot during a postal strike

It had to be a postal ballot

TheMoth · 12/01/2023 19:12

Anyone brave enough to admit to not bothering to send it back? If so, why didn't you?

I would also like to know why teachers are so spineless. Is it because we're used to being kicked? Cos we take shit from kids every day? Cos we were the good kids in school who didn't rock the boat? Cos we're mainly female (with the angry menopausal ones excised)?

functionoverform · 12/01/2023 19:14

Really saddened that nasuwt hasn't met the threshold.

I know in our area that (SE) that we are running at 55% turnout - there is a dashboard that members click on to say they have voted, so some regions I think will have met threshold for the NEU. There is also a conference planned for Jan 21st to plan strike action, so am very very hopeful that the numbers are good.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 12/01/2023 19:27

I spoke to nasuwt colleagues today who were very disappointed and said they are considering a switch if NEU ballot passes the threshold.

LWTW · 12/01/2023 19:49

I am surprised by the apathy in the turn out across Englad/Wales. I teach in Scotland and am a member and rep of the EIS. Our member turnout for strike action was 70% with 95% voting in favour of strike action. I presumed the results in England and Wales would be similar, the workload and working conditions in England sound even worse than the issues we are tackling here in Scotland. Good luck to the other English unions waiting for their results ✊️

Chubbernut · 12/01/2023 19:54

Teachers can’t win really. If they vote against striking then they’re spineless and apathetic. If they vote to strike then they’re selfish and don’t care about their students.

FourEyesGood · 12/01/2023 19:56

Very disappointed. I’m the NASUWT rep in my school. If a few more of those not wanting to strike had returned their ballots with a ‘no’ vote, we would have been past the 50% threshold.

I’d really like to know how many members didn’t receive their ballot papers at all. A few of my colleagues didn’t, but I told them which address to email to get them sent again.

Fingers crossed for a higher turnout from the other unions.

It's the not voting at all, that gets me. The disinterest in our own profession.

But then, I'm the daughter of a trade unionist; it was practically a religion in our house. I also remember the days of monthly union meetings when I first started teaching. I think many teachers join unions because they told that they need protection in case they get accused of stuff etc, but don't actually see that being part of union is doing your bit to make your working conditions better.

Is that really what you think? Most of the parents at our school are 100% supportive of the teachers striking. It'll be a total hassle juggling work but plenty of parents agree, teachers are overworked and underpaid.

Twiglets1 · 12/01/2023 20:20

I'm a bit shocked by the apathy.
I'm a TA who voted but I'm with NEU and I really hope NEU has at least reached the threshold (we will find out on Monday).
I don't see the postal strikes as being much of an excuse. We could vote since October and have had constant text reminders with NEU.

TheMoth · 12/01/2023 20:31

NaS messaged frequently too. But if people never got their ballot papers or thought they'd returned them....

Twiglets1 · 12/01/2023 20:33

I find these excuses pretty lame. Never got the ballot paper, thought I returned it, the dog ate it....

A lot of teachers seem to have no understanding of what a union is for and care even less.

Indigoshift · 12/01/2023 20:38

A colleague of mine said she could not afford to lose the money.
Even though it makes us lose more long term. She said she couldn't lose £100 next month.

Yellowgreenpurple · 12/01/2023 20:40

I think most teachers do see a Union as a sort of insurance policy, if they are accused of hitting a student, for example, or if they are bullied by headteachers. Unfortunately, I’m not sure unions are best placed to deal with those issues, and it does leave a bit of an awkward question - what is their purpose? Do they have a purpose?

It may sound obvious but if I was going to strike and then I was targeted by my HT as a result, I’d like the reassurance the Union would fight for me, and I just haven’t got that.

loveandwarmth · 12/01/2023 20:41

I had to ask for 2 replacement ballots so overall apparently 3 were sent in total yet I only received 1! I've not had any other mail go missing that I know of!
I wonder if there were others that never received their ballot but didn't keep repeatedly asking for replacements like I did.

GuyFawkesDay · 12/01/2023 20:42

I asked for replacement ballots too. Both myself and via my rep at school.

Never arrived! Really angry about it

SugarQills · 12/01/2023 21:14

I voted to strike in the nurses strike but I had to ask for 5 replacement ballots! Lots of my colleagues never got a ballot paper at all. Not the same as teachers I know but it's shocking how much postal ballots were affected by the postal strikes..

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/01/2023 21:18

I didn't get one, nor did the replacement I requested arrived. Others have said they got follow up texts chasing up their vote but I got none of those either. It's frustrating.

user1471530109 · 12/01/2023 21:23

Never received a ballot despite emailing twice and replying to a text reminding me to vote. All done weeks and months before the deadline. I finally received something from NASUWT on the 9th! But not a bloody ballot paper! This isn't down to the members from what I can tell 😡

donttellmehesalive · 12/01/2023 22:17

I'm disappointed too. How embarrassing that we are pretty much the only public service that won't be striking. We get what we deserve. Hope none of the 60% who cba voting grumble about pay or conditions. If NEU get the numbers, I'll switch.
