How to get into black coffee?

marathonrunn · 10/01/2023 09:55

I am on a diet and really want to get into black coffee. It will give me energy without the calories although I don't like the taste. I can drink it but I don't really enjoy it. Is the answer to this to just continue to drink it until I learn to enjoy it or is it an acquired taste?

Caffeine doesn’t give you energy. It can actually be extremely disruptive and affect your sleep. I’ve been caffeine free for 3 years.

I like the taste of coffee but only ever drink decaf, either black (homemade nitro cold brew) or with a splash of double cream. I’ve lost over 4 stone in the last year.

Yup, just drink more. There's no magic trick. If you like it with milk you can eventually like it without.

EndlessRain1 · 10/01/2023 09:57

The way to do it is to swtich to skimmed milk and then reduce the amount gradually. You get used to it. But even switching to skimmed milk should be enough, there's barely any calories in a splach of skimmed milk. Unless you have have lattes etc

I did it.i just put less and less milk in each time.I now can only drink black coffee

Pr1mr0se · 10/01/2023 09:58

Or you could try green tea instead of coffee - still has the caffeine.

This is the answer. The more you drink it, the more palatable it becomes. Good quality coffee helps too.

Thewildling · 10/01/2023 10:01

I personally found that those coffee bags are far nicer black than instant coffee. Much smoother

EndlessRain1 · 10/01/2023 10:02

Yes good coffee is a must. I wouldn't ever choose to drink instant, ever, as others say if that's what you are drinking go for something else, it doesn't even have a lot of caffeine in it - comparatively.

BarryK3nt · 10/01/2023 10:02

Why don’t you try it with unsweetened almond milk? Barely any calories in it.

Oysterbabe · 10/01/2023 10:03

Just keep drinking it. I can't imagine having it any other way now.

daisyjgrey · 10/01/2023 10:04

What kind of coffee are you trying to drink? If it's instant coffee and you're trying to drink it black then I'm not surprised you don't like it, it'll taste like ditchwater.

Get a mokka pot and some good espresso ground coffee from somewhere that isn't a supermarket and give that a try, it's a world of difference.

Whyisitsososohard · 10/01/2023 10:05

What about iced black coffee? I love an iced Americano and make them at home too.

This is how I did it.
Same with sugar, now I'm a terrible coffee snob and grind my single origin beans every day 🤣

QueefQueen80s · 10/01/2023 10:06

You don't need to lose milk altogether, like someone else said use alternative milk. Unsweetened almond milk is really low.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 10/01/2023 10:10

Ugh, didn't occur to me you'd be trying to drink instant black. That stuff is only bearable with milk and sugar - and I never take sugar in anything else. Even then it doesn't taste like coffee. It's just warm and wet.

(Can you tell I really hate instant coffee?!)

ghjklo · 10/01/2023 10:13

choose a nice single origin coffee (not instant!) from the supermarket. Don't add water that's boiling, as it burns the taste (use water that's just off the boil).

You could alternately drink black tea or herbal tea, green tea, matcha or similar without milk. They are nice and give energy. I believe black / green tea have weight loss properties in and of themselves as well as the caffeine element.

BooksAndHooks · 10/01/2023 10:13

I started drinking black coffee by accident. I’d reduced the amount of milk gradually whilst losing weight and eventually it just wasn’t worth putting in the tiny amount I was using. I can’t drink it with milk at all now it tastes far too sweet.

CountZacular · 10/01/2023 10:18

You don't really need to drop the milk (supposing you're not drinking whole milk) or even drink coffee at all. You could also have smaller amounts of caffeine in other drinks like green/black tea, for example.

However, I'm a big drinker of unsweetened black coffee. I really reduced milk in my diet as I no longer eat cereal and due to that started to find it too creamy in the coffee. Just a general reduction and you'll get used to it.

EyesOnThePies · 10/01/2023 10:22

I wouldn’t be trying to develop a coffee habit!

Prices are rising so fast, I spend £5 a week on ground coffee for me. The more you drink the fussier you get.

But if you must… go for a medium or light roast. You get more of the flavour and fragrance of the bean, IMO, where as a high roast you get more of the bitterness. Try Kenyan beans which are fruity.

Instant is horrid

Hankunamatata · 10/01/2023 10:22

I moved to using unsweetened almond milk as black was too harsh on stomach. I either use dash or
You can heat cup almond milk then put coffee in it if you want something that's filling.

marathonrunn · 10/01/2023 10:22

Would getting something like this make it taste better as yes, I am drinking instant coffee. And if so what coffee should I get for that machine?

Go decaff too

Itsonlyagame · 10/01/2023 10:23

Add a tiny pinch of salt, honestly game changer.

bobbytorq · 10/01/2023 10:23

Yep, just keep drinking it. I got used to it at work as we always ranout of milk. It took a few months for me to say I enjpyed it.

marathonrunn · 10/01/2023 10:25

I can't drink anything sweet tasting at all, I have diabetes and it just raises my insulin and I get very tired. I'm going from coffee with two sugars and milk to black coffee. I don't mind drinking it for a while if I dislike it as long as I can get used to the taste. Even sweeteners I can't tolerate.
