To be sick of cashless society

Ihatepcos · 10/01/2023 09:31

I prefer to use cash, I always have.

I find budgeting and spending so much easier. If I am tapping away on my card I think nothing of constant £3 £6 etc being spent on things I probably wouldn't buy if I was spending cash.

More and more places simply don't take cash and it's driving me mad.

@bringmetheheadofpastaalfredo Never heard of that card. But just how many different cards and apps do I need to operate in the digital world? I am already sick of every shop, bank and service provider wanting me to download an app.

You don't need all those apps.
But if you could have one banking app that does so many things, that saves you money, and is free, I don't really understand why you wouldn't. You can do it your way, but you can't then complain that your way is costly and difficult when there are such easy options available,

Badbadbunny · 10/01/2023 12:01

@Magicpaintbrush

or who don't have internet banking or even an email address like my Nan (she doesn't have internet in her house, no router, nothing).

Well she will have that in 2025 because the landline phone system is being shut down and internet based phones will be the only option for people wanting a phone line, or they'd need to use a mobile phone.

Whaaaaaaaaat????? They're getting rid of landlines as well? I've heard nothing about this. Bloody hell. 😡

Waynettaaa · 10/01/2023 14:10

I vote with my feet if somewhere doesn't accept cash.

BradfordGirl · 10/01/2023 14:16

They are not getting rid of landlines yet. They wanted to. But some places still have too poor connectivity and even more importantly alarms many elderly people wear need landlines to work.
So there needs to be a lot of issues sorted first.
Although it will cut many people off from the phone. People can use landline phones with enormous buttons, that can not use smartphones. The tec is not yet up to scratch.

Where doesn't accept cash ?

The nice bar/diner I went to the other week, wouldn’t even accept cash for a tip! I asked for the service charge to be taken off so I could tip the server , but no could do. No cash allowed on premises.

I do need lots of apps. Three for car parking alone.

Yeah this was confirmed about two years ago.

BradfordGirl · 10/01/2023 14:17

@bringmetheheadofpastaalfredo I already have a banking app. This would be a second one.

Well, you'll be able to have a VOIP landline, but its a bit like complaining that you can't get the parts for your teletype machine or have your fax machine serviced.

Things change. Landlines are obsolete. Cash is in decline. But the UK is a long way from being cashless, so it's not an actual problem.

It would be a much better one, is the point! I have a banking app, but my revolut account is so much more useful.

I don't work for them, it's no odds to me, I'm just saying that many of the issues people have with exchanging money, paying abroad, tracking payments etc are all solved easily with the app. OR one of the many available similar ones. If people don't want things to be cheaper and easier, that's up to them!

Won’t make a jot of difference. They don’t care 😂

BradfordGirl · 10/01/2023 14:24

@bringmetheheadofpastaalfredo I have great service from my bank and a branch very close by if I have issues. And yes complex issues still arise that can not be sorted online. I am not changing bank to one I have never heard of and that I can only see one review about their customer care.

Why would you change? This can be in addition. But your bank doesn't offer any of the services I am talking abhout here.

If people don't want easy simple options that save them money, ok. But they really need to not then complain about not having them.

BradfordGirl · 10/01/2023 14:30

@bringmetheheadofpastaalfredo I thought you were suggesting me changing banks, sorry if I got that wrong.
My point was simply about the number of apps on my phone, it is getting ridiculous.

Witsendwilly · 10/01/2023 14:32

closingloop · 10/01/2023 12:09

Ok, so you really REALLY can't think of a reason why cashless is bad?

I have a £20 note. I give it to you in payment, you pay for something else with it. Maybe it could change hands a 600 times in a couple of years. Then it comes back to me. It's worth £20.

Or, and this is where people do need to think,

I pay you £20 by card. Bank charges for each transaction are are 2% and the original £20 decreases slightly each time it 'changes hands' 600 times in a couple of years. Then it comes back to me.

All that's left is a penny, the rest is taken by the bank charges.

You are missing the fact that every time a business banks that £20 note, the bank charge them a percentage.

These days that percentage is often more than a card transaction fee would be on £20

BradfordGirl · 10/01/2023 14:34

@Witsendwilly You do not have to bank income. I used to work for a very small local company and most of our purchases were by card of bank transfer but we recorded the cash we took and then spent it. Not realistic for large businesses, but it is for small businesses. So our cleaner was paid cash which she preferred. Travel expenses were in cash.

BubziOwl · 10/01/2023 14:37

1hyuny · 10/01/2023 09:33

Just flip it round; sounds like your own psychology about it. When you're spending on your card just imagine it's cash and stop and think before you tap.

Yep - because I grew up with a debit card and not physical money, I have the exact opposite mindset to OP. It doesn't feel real when I spend physical cash!

you can probaby get rid of many. Just don't throw the baby out with the bath water, make the tech work for you. Look at what you need and what saves you time and money.

diddl · 10/01/2023 14:43

CatJumperTwat · 10/01/2023 13:43

You should talk to your bank. Your cards should work abroad.

Well it seems to be hit & miss.

For example-airport hotel yes( not a surprise!)

Asda-no!

BradfordGirl · 10/01/2023 14:46

@bringmetheheadofpastaalfredo I do. But increasingly places are making you order on apps e.g. glee club, or have their app to get a discount e.g. various supermarkets. I have deleted loads of optional apps and now only add ones I really need.
We do not all have the money for fancy iphones. Totally sick of it.

illiterato · 10/01/2023 14:47

Neveranynamesleft · 10/01/2023 12:39

I feel sorry for the elderly or vunerable people living alone with no one to help them.
It's wrong to presume everyone understands and has access to the internet. Simple things like going to the cash point, paying bills over the phone by debit card, paying by card in the supermarket, direct debits etc etc.. all of these totally baffle my elderly parents even though I help.

But your parents weren’t elderly when debit cards and direct debits first became commonplace. This is why it’s important to try to adopt new stuff when it comes in rather than wait till there’s literally no choice, because otherwise you get too far behind and you end up being an 80 year old who can’t use the internet because you were a Luddite when you were 55 and in a much better position to start using it.

Carers are not allowed to use cards. They have to use cash if going to the shops or paying for prescriptions. Lack of cash causes real issues.

There are special cards for carers to use. They are called carers cards
