To ask for help with my new iPhone

Being cheeky and posting here for traffic!

I've upgraded to an iPhone 14 from an iPhone 11 and, since then, my iCloud storage says it's nearly full. I've got the 200 GB plan but 190GB is being used. It's a family plan but 54GB is being used by family and the rest is all me.

My old phone has been completely wiped and I've removed all previous backups. But my photos (just under 25000 of them) are about 122GB. Does that sound right for that many photos? It might be but I'm 95% certain that before I upgraded I had plenty of space left. I definitely didn't get any warnings that it was nearly full.

Is it possible that my photos have been duplicated or my old phone has stored them somewhere? I'm totally baffled!

Can you log on to iCloud from a laptop and see what is there? You could delete duplicates.

ShakespearesBlister · 08/01/2023 19:07

Log in to iCloud and see what's there. On my iPhone 13 I found the icloud storage got used up very quickly and I had to subscribe to another plan, now I have iPhone 14 it hasn't yet warned me storage was running out.

GivenchyDahhling · 08/01/2023 19:07

I have 23000 at around 150GB so sounds about right to me. I have the family plan too and just moved it up to the 2TB of storage!

thunderstruckk · 08/01/2023 19:09

Sounds about right - can you afford to upgrade the plan to the 2TB one? I had to as I'm very snap happy!

Oblomov22 · 08/01/2023 19:20

25,000 photos on phone is not sensible. Download them? Sort them out into years /Themes/holidays etc. and then delete most from your phone. Only save your favourites.

Onnabugeisha · 08/01/2023 19:25

It’s quite possible your old phone wasn’t backing up your photos to the iCloud and the new phone is now doing that.

The 122GB for 25k photos sounds low, as I have 3GB for 902 photos.

functioningadult · 08/01/2023 19:28

Do you have more than one phone backup saved? This will take up quite a bit of memory. To check go to Settings, then your Apple ID at the top, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup. You can delete any duplicates/older backups there

functioningadult · 08/01/2023 19:29

Or I could improve my reading comprehension as think you’ve already checked that. Sorry!

whoknows1230 · 08/01/2023 20:07

Thank you for all the replies.

It sounds like maybe it was about that level beforehand and it's just a coincidence that the warning has started since I upgraded.

I can afford to upgrade to 2TB but hate paying for things when I don't need to, so maybe that'll give me the push I need to sort them all out! I've had it on my radar for over four years to sort out my photos, as I know so many can be deleted, but I never seem to get around to it.

😂
I had one from my old phone which was 9.9GB but I deleted that, so only have the latest one left

It might not be your photos that causing the issue.

I had storage issues - ‘other’ storage was taking up nearly all the room - when I moved to my iPhone 14 I had to do a factory reset and it was all fine

whoknows1230 · 08/01/2023 20:19

I've actually just downloaded an app called Get Sorted: Clean Up Photos which apparently makes it very easy to sort and remove photos so I'm going to trial that.

However, my photos are also backed up to Google Photos and it's not clear whether if the app deletes them from my phone/iCloud whether it'll also delete them from Google Photos as otherwise there's no point

Did "other" show as taking up the storage? Mine is showing that 122GB is photos

Yes but it showed as ‘other’ or ‘system’ storage IIRC

I can't find anything that says either of those 😫

I might be at cross purposes with you

I think you’re talking about iCloud and I’m
taking about iPhone storage - I know very little about iCloud
