To be fed up of supermarket low stock

BradfordGirl · 08/01/2023 18:55

Since Christmas stock is so low in the supermarkets. I have tried different supermarkets and going at different times, it makes no difference. Today I had to go two supermarkets so I could buy bread, milk and ham - so hardly an exotic shopping list. The supermarkets all have some large empty spaces in their fruit and veg section and lots of other things missing. And trying to get eggs is not easy.
The only supermarket with good stock is the co-op. I went in as I had been a few places trying to get eggs and was a bit taken aback to see shelves fully stocked. Unfortunately it is quite expensive.
But I am getting fed up of all the other supermarkets having permanently low stock.

There has been a few shortages in my local supermarket but I just get alternatives. Haven't got the time or energy to be going round different shops. There's still enough stock so nobody will starve so that's good enough for me.

catandcoffee · 08/01/2023 21:15

what areas is this happening in ?

Surrey not too far from Guildford, and no issues at all.

Eggs is to do with avian flu, not Brexit.

If you speak to UK poultry farmers they have stockpiles of eggs which bird flu has had no impact on at all. The real reason for the alleged shortage is that the supermarkets are charging customers more but won't pay British egg farmers a fair price. Don't blame Brexit. Blame the supermarkets who are importing eggs instead of buying British because they can pay less while charging you more.

Rumour has it that people with wood burners are buying up the wood cat litter

Jeez. That will be nice to breathe in.

ancientgran · 08/01/2023 21:17

My local Sainsbury's seems OK but Lidl seems to have been low on everything for months. I buy my eggs from the local farm so I'm not sure what they are like in the shops.

LuckeyBuoy · 08/01/2023 21:18

According to my Sainsburys, there is a national shortage of eggs. But as I don't eat them, this is not something that worries me.

Blendandmix · 08/01/2023 21:18

I stopped my Ocado smart pass because everything was out of stock it's crazy

Snoken · 08/01/2023 21:21

I think this must be due to brexit. I live in the EU and we don't have any problems with our supermarkets and we are obviously also affected by bird flu and the war in Ukraine. I left the UK a year ago and I remember it was starting to become quite empty on the shelves already then. Must be so frustrating.

There seems to be two weeks in the month that we cannot find wheat squares cereal anywhere!

Eggs are well stocked in our local Lidl, although there is a limit of 2 boxes per customer.

I thought I was noticing generally fewer gaps on shelves now.

I’ve noticed own brand Shreddies are often out of stock at Tesco, but Morrison usually have them in.

Noticed egg shortage locally also, but never have a problem when I order from Ocado’s

Rarely

Sainsburys are lying. They just aren't willing to pay farmers a fair price.

Coconut212 · 08/01/2023 21:22

I couldn’t get milk or chicken also couldn’t get cooked chicken in Asda. Did notice there were no eggs but I don’t use many eggs so can do without them. Went into M&S also not cooked chicken

But isn't it also that a lot of the farmers used to get financial support from the EU which they are now not getting, and the supermarkets (ends up being the consumers) are not bridging the gap?

ShippingForecastMeditator · 08/01/2023 21:31

When those of you who chose to leave the EU did your research before voting, supply chain disruption was very obviously going to be one of the most noticeable disruptions. So why the surprise now?

SplunkPostGres · 08/01/2023 21:35

Pets at Home - shelves for small animal bedding, litter etc are permanently almost empty. Went in today for non clumping wood chip litter and left empty handed. I’ll need to pop into local small pet store tomorrow instead; stock levels seem much better.

Craghopper1 · 08/01/2023 21:36

It's supply chain disruption from leaving the EU. Leaving our biggest trading partner was always going to cause problems. The eggs is separate- avian flu.

katseyes7 · 08/01/2023 21:36

I work on a supermarket checkout.
Apparently all these shortages are purely the fault of the person sitting on the till.
So myself and my colleagues believe, judging by the comments from the customers. We 'need to do something about it'.

Nothing to do with Avian Flu! As this farmer explains

ASatisfyingThump · 08/01/2023 21:53

I had my shopping delivered today, no hot dog rolls or sliced chicken for DS1s sandwiches. It's not the end of the world, but it is annoying, especially since I rely on the deliveries because I can't drive. It's becoming a regular thing to have items missing, the prices are going up, and like a pp said, some own brands just aren't available, so I'm paying more for branded products, often in smaller quantities. With everything else going up to it's starting to really worry me.

No issues with eggs in Ireland.

It's Brexit.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 08/01/2023 21:54

No shortage of anything in Waitrose. South East.

CoffeeBoy · 08/01/2023 21:55

Morrisons seems shit for stock locally, their free from freezer was totally empty last week.

and I can’t find Nescafé carafe menu toffee nut latte sachets anywhere!

Are chickens under lockdown in Ireland as well?

Wishihadanalgorithm · 08/01/2023 21:59

In Aldi today there were some eggs but last time I went there weren’t any. I was in as soon as they opened though, expect they would run out within the hour.

There were gaps in the cleaning products, the frozen food sections and they haven’t had oat milk for months - although today there was the barista version.

ASDA hasn’t had eggs for ages it seems. I think we need to change our shopping habits - especially when we consider the price rises.

KangarooKenny · 08/01/2023 22:00

The only thing I’ve struggled to find is eggs, but I have got some now.
