So thinking of writing a books on increasing self confidence, self reliance power of positivity, promoting resilience, creating contentment, maintaining compassion and kindness without becoming a doormat etc just few ideas.... Does anything think there's a demand.....

Find silver linings? Oh dear.

EmmaEmerald · 08/01/2023 20:46

Still no word on what you mean by "empowered"?

AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature · 08/01/2023 20:46

MrNorrell · 08/01/2023 20:40

But they did it in a resilient and community-minded way. Keep up!

Might go challenge some neigbours to battle.
Community building right there. Other neigbours might meanwhile roast some pigs while telling the sons to bring their swards to train because they might have to go battle the next door postode's ketwig lads if they trespass into ours. Glory to our fallen.

No, seriously now. This is not Sparta.
Joking aside.
I would again seriously ask about what data does op plan to use because again "majority are unhappy" when that is provably wrong would not be a great UPS for the book.

AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature · 08/01/2023 20:47

Bloody typos

Holihobbies · 08/01/2023 20:48

I am slightly offended that you seem to think a relationship with God is the only way to happiness and contentment.

I am an extremely happy, contented and empowered atheist. I believe it is because I was brought up by wonderful parents especially a father who instilled true confidence and self belief in me ! I hope I can do the same for my children.

Sorry but I don't think it's something people can necessarily change easily and definitely not by reading a crappy book on the subject.

IceStationHorse · 08/01/2023 20:49

Why don't you try some blogs first to get a feel for how this would go?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/01/2023 20:50

EmmaEmerald · 08/01/2023 20:46

Still no word on what you mean by "empowered"?

Par for the course on MN. Ask someone how they would define a word and crickets. I don't see how OP can write a book about 'empowering' people if she can't even say what she means by the word. It's like saying you want to be happy - any counsellor worth the name will pin you down to what you mean by it and what it would look like when you achieve your aim.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/01/2023 20:51

Sorry op you sound lovely but do so naive.

What are you hoping to get from this book? Your own satisfaction? Money? Fame?

quinceh · 08/01/2023 20:52

I think you need to move away from generalisations about the past vs the present and try to find a much narrower angle - something new to talk about. If I was going to read a book about empowerment, I’d want something unusual to make me
think, with good real-life examples at its base.
Good luck with the creative writing - may be worth joining a group if you can.

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 20:55

@Stepuptowardsinfinity . I should forget about it definitely lol.... But I am using blended mode.... on a Sunday night on a forum. My apologies , I don't aim to have excellent well executed paragraphs on mumsnet lol. Haven't shared my writing at all but thank you so much for your post again very much appreciated....

I’ve published two books of this kind with major publishers. Books are good for your brand but you don’t make anything like a living off them.

ShrillBill · 08/01/2023 20:57

This article from Julie Bindel explains the difference between empowerment and autonomy;
''No one who actually has power ever talks about “empowering” themselves, which is why men never use the phrase about their own activities. Tell me the last time you heard a man say: “That team meeting was so empowering.”
thecritic.co.uk/feminist-fallacies-empowerment/

Autonomy and contentment are more realistic goals than empowerment and happiness.

Kanaloa · 08/01/2023 21:02

I mean it isn’t a brand new idea - there are lots of books like that. Your idea obviously is in a bit of a niche as it’s aimed only at Christians - however please be aware that will limit your market drastically. I know you say you believe whether someone is religious or not their call to a higher power will be answered, but those who isn’t believe in God won’t believe that! So they simply will not buy a book that’s so religiously focused.

But why not start drafting it? I write a lot, never published anything, and I think it’s great. Maybe you end up with something publishable, maybe not.

Hawkins001 · 08/01/2023 21:04

All the best op, better to try and fail, than think oh pickles no one will read it, ect. @Salrose123

Onnabugeisha · 08/01/2023 21:13

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 20:44

Lol thank you for your responses, especially some really useful ones,

I don't know i just want to help people feel more positive than negative or be able to find silver linings.. . Probably have two books, positivity for people in general (no faith based element at all), and faith based for people who believe in God or open to idea.....

I think two books is a good idea or have a religion chapter so that in some way religion is an optional read. I’m religious, but it’s a religion without a God….

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 21:13

@Kanaloa I love writing, I just feel have to get the words on paper... I guess would have two books, I'm not looking to make money as such just help people feel better about themselves, give them confidence or I don't know help them to be more creative, Tap into their true passions, true goals,.. ...if they want that maybe . @Hawkins001 thank you will definitely try xx

Kanaloa · 08/01/2023 21:15

I mean if you love writing then what could you possibly lose out of this? Researching an area you’re obviously interested in, practicing writing, passing your time in a pleasurable way - to me it’s a win win situation! I don’t see any way it could be negative really. And I often find when you start writing your ideas form and change write in front of you. I love comparing first drafts to finished work as you see so many interesting changes.

Onnabugeisha · 08/01/2023 21:18

If you’re going to bring in history, do so in a way that says back then it was so much worse and these are the coping mechanisms people used to recognise and treasure moments of joy and a measurement of contentment.

Humans have come close to extinction a few times in the past as well…and yet we survived so that gives hope we can survive the crises of our times as well.

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 21:20

@Mybonnielad thank you for your constructive advice...

Could you please advise best place to find reasonable professional editors also can I ask what your books are about? Are they fiction or non fiction?

Is it hard to format and upload I was thinking pdf format..
But actually I am quite clueless in terms of how self publishing works....

OP posts:
Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 21:29

That's a very good point @Onnabugeisha about how we practically learn from historical events...

@Kanaloa yes I do write drafts and then cringe and delete at times....What do you write about if you don't mind me asking?

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 08/01/2023 21:34

As a historian, can I beg you not to just throw “history” in without proper, rigorous research.

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 21:37

Noted @BitOutOfPractice but who's version of history?

OP posts:
AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 08/01/2023 21:56

It doesn't matter whose "version" of history - any historical angle requires proper research and not vacuous generalisations about how much better, or how awful, it was "back then".

MasterBeth · 08/01/2023 22:05

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 18:56

@Cuppasoupmonster lol I definitely agree with you. I think all the "empowering" isn't actually making our lives better. Generally we are more selfish, more materialistic and can't look past our own noses. May be seen as a bit twee but my passion is to inspire genuine kindness and care and consideration for others, help yourself, help others, help communities etc alot of my inspiration does stem from believing in a higher power.... Society seemed to be alot happier generally in the past compared to the post modern society we live in now.... Will get alot flack for this but I do believe in God and believe sincerely whether you are religious or not if you call on God or even a higher spiritual power your call will almost immediately be answered xx

Are you Noel Edmonds? He writes this kind of shit.

Salrose123 · 08/01/2023 22:06

I was asking the historian but thank you your response is much appreciated. Have a great night :)
