To not be bothered about going on a long haul holiday?

dottypotter · 08/01/2023 12:18

Anyone else the same. I could afford a long haul holiday but it dosent interest me.
I prefer just to go to Europe and probably a flight of no more than 4 hours?
Sometimes enjoy a break in England too.
Just can't be bothered with sitting on a flight so long, the increased cost of insurance worrying about being so far from home etc? More travelling getting to London if the flights only from London etc.
I guess I'm in my comfort zone and not bothered about stepping out of it.
Anyone else?

I like both. If you’re happy why does it matter?

BotherThat · 08/01/2023 12:20

I haven’t been abroad since my youngest was born 7 years ago. And I used to be a globetrotter with very itchy feet and a deep wanderlust 😁 I can’t be bothered any more. Travelling with kids is just a headache.

DuplicateUserName · 08/01/2023 12:21

I'm the same as you OP.

Being 'reasonable' or 'unreasonable' doesn't come into it though, obviously.

KangarooKenny · 08/01/2023 12:22

I’ve done three long haul flights, never again. I struggle to sit still long enough to get to the canaries !

Notimeforaname · 08/01/2023 12:22

I'm the same. Go on several holidays a year, some facy some cheap but all in Europe. 4.5 hours is my max on a plane. No real lime difference to contend with either. Yanbu

Notimeforaname · 08/01/2023 12:22

Fancy*

Notimeforaname · 08/01/2023 12:23

Time difference* Jesus 🙄

Spaghetti201 · 08/01/2023 12:24

Same. In fact, I feel all holidays are overrated. Spending thousands to stay in 1 room (smaller than my nice house), others peoples noisy kids around, sand everywhere, grumpy kids because of the heat. I think tv adverts have duped us all.

Hobbesmanc · 08/01/2023 12:27

Flying long haul is just one of the exciting things I look forward to. I love coming out of the airport in some steamy hot nosy city.

But I appreciate everyone is different. And I probably wouldn't bother going long haul for an AI beach. Locke Cancun or Dominican. Not judging them but I'd prefer a Greek beach

You are doing holidays completely wrong if that is how you view them all.

AllyCatTown · 08/01/2023 12:31

Do what makes you happy.

Personally I don’t mind long haul flights. I used to be afraid of flying and went to Europe on bus and ferry, so to me long haul isn’t a big issue. I remember going on my first flight as an adult which was to Japan and thinking how easy it was compared to some journeys in Europe I did. I also like on long haul flights that there’s more room and you have tv to watch.

That being said I’m taking travelling alone or with adults. I now have a 1 year old and don’t want the stress of travelling with children. So it will be UK holidays for a long time.

AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature · 08/01/2023 12:34

Personal preference. Nothing wrong on not flying far nor on wanting to fly far.

Ilikewinter · 08/01/2023 13:27

I feel the same. We havent been abroad since the end of 2019 and honestly I cant say Ive missed it. We got a dog last year and I cant face putting him in kennels...and I dont want to leave him 🤣. We went on 6 UK breaks last year and still spent less than what we would have done on our long haul holidays so thats got to be a plus.

BatshitBanshee · 08/01/2023 13:32

I didn't mind long haul before covid tbh, DH and I travelled quite a bit but since the lockdowns (and kids) I find it very, very hard to sit still for longer than an hour so flying LH just seems like a nightmare right now. I can't relax, can't fall asleep, can't read with the same comfort as I did before. We went away last summer and the flight was 2.5hrs but the faff in the airports before and after I could just do without - as well as other people.

Quite content to holiday at home for the foreseeable or do a sail and drive holiday!

somewhereovertherain · 08/01/2023 13:42

We prefer long haul mainly because we work in tourism and then to holiday in January

live in the north of England would always avoid London going to the states via Dublin other long haul we’ve done from Manchester and Paris. Have occasional done London but really no need.

also exploring and enjoying totally different cultures to ours.

but YANBU it’s personal choice.

Never been on an overrated holiday loved every one be it Northumberland, Sweden, Barbados or any of the other holidays.

we really enjoy ours - carefully plan and tend to avoid resorts as a rule.

DillDanding · 08/01/2023 13:46

I like both. I love a city break in Europe, but I also love long haul.

I’m looking forward to a long haul flight in a few weeks. Last one we did involved the stress of PCR tests 3 days prior, and the horribleness of wearing masks throughout the flight. So I’ll be enjoying it more than usual.

Claymorekick · 08/01/2023 13:49

We went long haul last year and said we wouldn't be in a rush to do it again. If it is a 'sunshine' holiday, the sun is the same sun wherever you go and totally not worth the long, boring flights and jetlag at both ends (waking up at 4am for the first few mornings on holiday and barely staying awake past 10pm was not great). Would rather pay a bit more for a better quality hotel in Europe and it would still be cheaper than last year!

Thighlengthboots · 08/01/2023 13:51

Of course you aren’t unreasonable- that’s just silly! Stick to what you enjoy! I personally love flying to faraway places but we are all different so don’t apologise or justify doing what you want.

LlynTegid · 08/01/2023 13:57

Visiting family a long distance away, but not otherwise. I am with you OP.

Also some of the longer distance ones are to places where same-sex relationships are illegal, and whilst I have never had a same-sex relationship, would never go to such countries.

mamaison · 08/01/2023 14:00

I usually do a few long haul flights annually, mostly economy, and absolutely dread them - especially with the kids. Seeing family is the main motivation though.

But it is really lovely to be suddenly somewhere so completely different, in a different season. I love stopping in Asia and having an insane 5 star hotel breakfast, room service etc. I love a road trip in USA. I love being in my home country.

I am finding it more daunting stepping out of my comfort zone post covid. I had to travel long haul during the first months of the pandemic and it was very daunting and has knocked my confidence a bit.

Can definitely see the temptation of staying closer to home.

Lcb123 · 08/01/2023 15:53

I can’t relate as I love travel and constantly itchy feet. But if you don’t want to - why should you! Do what you enjoy

Heyahun · 08/01/2023 16:22

Don’t feel like this at all! I think are off to japan with our toddler soon and I c ant wait. I’ve been before and you won’t get anywhere else like it in the world culture wise - it’s a beautiful country and well worth the massive journey for me.

I travelled around South America and Asia too and you won’t get anything quite like it in Europe

I agree that it wouldn’t be worth going long haul if you are just going to go to an all inclusive resort in cancun or something - I’d just go to Spain for that

but if you are going to explore and travel around the place / cities/hikes etc then I think long haul is definitely worth it

never been on one of these overated holiday like the previous poster describes though always enjoy ourselves

Funkyslippers · 08/01/2023 16:28

I was having this discussion with DD last night. She wants to go on a long haul holiday this year as 'we always go to Europe'! I pointed out that, as OP said, we'd probably have to get to London first, spend ages on a plane, have jet lag all for what you could most likely get on a short haul holiday. Of course this doesn't bother kids but it would put me off which is why we never go long haul. We particularly love Greece

Benjispruce4 · 08/01/2023 16:29

Have never been over NY flight distance and I found that hard but ok. I’d rather do no more than 4/5 hrs and love Europe and U.K. holidays but would t let it put me off visiting further afield. I want to go to Japan and to Australia even though I have family there. Not with young child though. Would make a point of breaking the journey with a day or two somewhere enroute .
