To not be bothered about going on a long haul holiday?

Anyone else the same. I could afford a long haul holiday but it dosent interest me.
I prefer just to go to Europe and probably a flight of no more than 4 hours?
Sometimes enjoy a break in England too.
Just can't be bothered with sitting on a flight so long, the increased cost of insurance worrying about being so far from home etc? More travelling getting to London if the flights only from London etc.
I guess I'm in my comfort zone and not bothered about stepping out of it.
Anyone else?

I hate airports, too @OffToThatPlace . Noisy, hot, busy, often crowded, expensive and you're trapped there for hours because the check in times are so early compared to the flights.

I even get antsy picking people up from Gatwick, and I only live half an hour away.

I'd rather drive down the road, spend 4 hours on a ferry and drive the rest of the way.

We travel loads - short and long.

Struggling to understand why this is in AIBU? We're all different 🤦🏻‍♀️

Also wondering if somewhere along the line I'd missed the memo that everyone was supposed to enjoy long haul travel, why do you think that @dottypotter ?

weemouse · 08/01/2023 18:10

For me there is nothing better than getting on a plane and discovering new places, it's one of life's joys.......for me.

We are all different, so it's fine that's the way you feel, but the excitement of seeing what is over the horizon is just too much for me to resist.

TheGoogleMum · 08/01/2023 18:12

I have a 4yr old and don't fancy taking her long haul, she's never been on a plane at all but long flights are hard for little kids. I didn't mind going pre children though the rare occasion we did have the money! Don't think I'd do it more than once a year either if I had the money

Bayleaf25 · 08/01/2023 18:21

Totally up to you really. I love long haul (can only afford it every 5 years or so) but it’s totally worth it in my opinion. Europe is great though so whatever you fancy.

I'd feel the same if the US was closer 😂 it's my favourite place to visit so usually always opt for there, I do wish it was less of a flight!

We have done several road trips in the US, it's our favourite holiday destination and the 8 hour + flight is worth it to us.
The time seems to fly😆 and on VA flights they are constantly offering meals, drinks and snacks so the hours are broken up. We did an epic 4 week road trip from Atlanta to Texas in October, and when we got home I said 'I'm done with holidays.'
Fast forward a couple of months all that travelling has been forgotten, and we are discussing where to go next!
We are retired though and it's just us two, if there were kids in the mix, that would be a whole different ball game.

I love short haul flights, I've done long haul several times and it's just not for me.

Flatandhappy · 27/04/2023 02:10

When you are used to travelling in Europe you have to totally readjust your idea of what constitutes a long flight when you end up in Australia if like us you love to travel. Anything under 7 hours I now consider a reasonable flight length, beyond that I can only say I truly enjoy it on the rare occasion we can afford busines. Otherwise it’s a case of just getting through it but I always think it’s worth it in the end. If you don’t find it worth the slog it is perfectly reasonable to stay home and do what makes you happy.

MillieOns · 27/04/2023 02:20

I’m happy to have a UK break. I’m also happy to travel anywhere in Europe for a holiday.

I’m happiest holidaying in the Caribbean. The long haul flight is definitely worth it. Disclaimer - I’ve not had a screaming baby/restless toddler near me on a long haul flight - yet! That may be a deal breaker for me 😬

Each to their own….

HoppingPavlova · 27/04/2023 05:07

Well, we’d be fucked on that basis. If you consider over 4hr long haul, it would be severely limiting. We could get to the State directly above and below us, and we could also cross the ditch to New Zealand but couldn’t get to the other States within our country, or indeed anywhere else in that time. The joys of living on a big island🤣. Tends to make us quite reasonable on expectations of flight lengths.

headstone · 27/04/2023 09:54

I haven’t been long haul and wouldn’t with small kids. However the idea of being able to sit for hours watching tv whilst someone serves me food and drink sounds pretty good. I’m petite as well so no issues with seating.

Nordicrain · 27/04/2023 09:55

ok. Good for you.

I like both and we try mix it up a bit. Short haul is of course easier, but sometimes you just fancy soemthing further afield.

99victoria · 27/04/2023 09:59

Love a long haul flight. Sitting down watching films for 7/8 hours while someone regularly brings you wine, gin and food. What's not to like? 😂

edwinbear · 27/04/2023 10:04

We've gone to Mexico for our last few holidays, we do love it there, but we're going to Crete this year mainly because we didn't much enjoy the 10hr flight last year. We like a nice hotel, hot weather, pools and a beach and realised we can get all that with a much shorter, 4hr flight. I'm also looking forward to being able to wander to the local village in the evening for food and/or drinks, whereas in Mexico you're confined to the hotel in the evenings really. Having said that, I'm sure we'll do another long haul at some point, just not this year.

Katieandthekids · 28/04/2023 15:20

Only interested in long haul to experience very different cultures and wouldn't do that right now with 3 small kids. Haven't been abroad for 4 years but planning to take them somewhere in Europe next year although might do Calais ferry!
