To not be bothered about going on a long haul holiday?

dottypotter · 08/01/2023 12:18

Anyone else the same. I could afford a long haul holiday but it dosent interest me.
I prefer just to go to Europe and probably a flight of no more than 4 hours?
Sometimes enjoy a break in England too.
Just can't be bothered with sitting on a flight so long, the increased cost of insurance worrying about being so far from home etc? More travelling getting to London if the flights only from London etc.
I guess I'm in my comfort zone and not bothered about stepping out of it.
Anyone else?

We went long haul last year and said we wouldn't be in a rush to do it again. If it is a 'sunshine' holiday, the sun is the same sun wherever you go and totally not worth the long, boring flights and jetlag at both ends (waking up at 4am for the first few mornings on holiday and barely staying awake past 10pm was not great). Would rather pay a bit more for a better quality hotel in Europe and it would still be cheaper than last year!

In the winter, you need to fly further afield to get the warmth though.

Oblomov22 · 08/01/2023 16:47

I'm not that bothered about going long haul anymore, been to great places when younger, now prefer shorter to Europe. Plus long haul is much more expensive and we don't have the budget to do it in style!

EyesOnThePies · 08/01/2023 16:47

Depends what you want.

For a relaxing beach holiday at the right time of year, plenty of fabulous options in Europe.

If you want to experience a totally different culture, food, history etc then a flight to Vietnam or Peru or India is worth the effort and expense.

Granted - I was just talking about summer holidays 🙂

gogohmm · 08/01/2023 16:52

I take long haul flights to get to specific places for a reason rather than for a weeks beach holiday. Can't see the point of all those hours if you aren't going to leave your hotel.

Thepeopleversuswork · 08/01/2023 16:55

Odd way to look at it. Surely it depends where you are going? Not all long haul destinations are the same.

There are some far flung destinations I would give five years of my life to visit, others where I would prefer to have a weekend by the sea in Wales.

BlackberrySky · 08/01/2023 17:00

It is very sensible to choose a holiday partly on the basis of the faff involved in getting there. If the end doesn't justify the means, then stick with what you like.

GyozaGuiting · 08/01/2023 17:04

I love long haul flying, I find the destinations provide wildly different culture and tend to be vastly different than the UK. Most recent long hauls include Jamaica, India and New York. Love the airport, the excitement of travel, love the plane! I’m not a beach person though so I really love the travel part.
BUT I love UK holidays as well and there’s nothing wrong to loving short haul!

Ellmau · 08/01/2023 17:11

Spending thousands to stay in 1 room (smaller than my nice house), others peoples noisy kids around, sand everywhere, grumpy kids because of the heat. I think tv adverts have duped us all.

I wouldn't fancy that kind of beach holiday myself.

But you can go to loads of places that aren't hot, eg the Alps, city breaks, lakes, countryside rather than beaches; you can rent a whole house not a hotel room if you prefer; you can pick less child focussed destinations if you want fewer other families.

user8912 · 08/01/2023 17:12

I'd feel the same if the US was closer 😂 it's my favourite place to visit so usually always opt for there, I do wish it was less of a flight!

ColdHandsHotHead · 08/01/2023 17:13

I've never done long haul. 4.5 hours to (I think) Cyprus was my longest. There's so much I haven't seen in Europe yet, I'm not bothered about going further afield.

whirlyhead · 08/01/2023 17:17

Long haul is ok if you can fly business and sleep properly. Otherwise it’s rubbish.

someone on a thread here said they flew back from the states during their recent horrendous bad weather and had 4 hours of bad turbulence. Now that would put me off flying long haul!

saraclara · 08/01/2023 17:20

Holidays are about doing what you want!

Personally, I love holidays to far off places where people's lives are totally different from mine. Where the air even smells and feels different! I also travel solo, independently and with a backpack, so most people I know of my age think I'm mad!

But I also get the joys of UK beach holidays (loved them with my babies) and European city breaks. And I can imagine that an all inclusive where you don't move from the hotel must be really relaxing!

You do whatever you like, because holidays are meant to be enjoyed, not endured. People who judge others for their taste in travel are generally snobs, and to be ignored.

YANBU. I have been thinking the same thing this weekend. DH and I will soon be booking our annual spring holiday, but as much as I like holidays, this time I simply can't be bothered and don't feel excited about the possibility of a holiday. This could be because our last holiday abroad wasn't a good experience and because we have had several good UK holidays.

I cannot stand airports, flight delays, fellow passengers, asking for a seat belt extender (though some people larger than me don't need one), uncomfortable aircraft seats, the anxiety when cases don't quickly appear at the other end, issues with the hotel, non existent reps (if a package holiday), crowded unhygienic buffets, delayed flights coming home which then ruin the holiday if not slept for 24 hours.

Perhaps I will change my mind but after previous experiences over the last few years, even before Covid, I'd rather stay in the UK, or perhaps take a no fly cruise from Southampton.

GarlandsinGreece · 08/01/2023 17:25

I live in the US, all family in the UK, and am obliged to do that flight at least once a year. It’s not the flying time and the faff I dislike—it’s the jet lag. I’m an insomniac and it can be ruinous for me. So yes, I definitely relish trips to the Caribbean or US domestic over trips to Europe these days. I’d love to visit Japan, but I’m not sure the utter sleep deprivation would be worth it.

Struggling to understand why this is in AIBU? We're all different 🤦🏻‍♀️

Phos · 08/01/2023 17:26

I can understand going LH if you want good weather in the winter season or there’s somewhere really specific you want to see but in general, I find I can get what I want in Europe and I don’t see the point of going long haul just for the bragging rights. You can find beautiful beaches in Europe, there’s no need to fly all the way to the Dominican to lie on one.

To be honest I’ve found some LH destinations a bit disappointing. Mauritius doesn’t live up to the hype and I will never know what people find to rave about in Cape Town.

The end justifying the means is exactly it for me. I'll get my head bitten off now 🙂 but I am sure New Zealand is a beautiful place (and I have family there). But for the travel costs, time to get there and the jet lag, is it really different enough from Norway and Iceland? Plus that's it's still English speaking so may not even feel as foreign and different rules it out, for me for now, as somewhere it's worth making the effort to go to.

Japan though would be worth it but it's not cheap to go so I'm happy with Europe.

BeanCounterBabe · 08/01/2023 17:30

Unless you’ve got more than two weeks leave at a time the expense of travelling long haul doesn’t seem worth it to me. When we can take longer and don’t have to pay school holiday prices then we’ll do it I expect. So much to see and do in Europe to keep us going on exciting holidays for life. I also feel less uncomfortable about human rights, animal cruelty, corruption etc in Europe. Not saying it doesn’t exist but not on the scale of what I saw in S America and Africa.

queenofarles · 08/01/2023 17:35

Oh it depends on the airlines entirely , if it’s with a lovely airlines like Singapore or QA then yes! .

KimberleyClark · 08/01/2023 17:38

I like long haul though have not really done much of it in my life. My first ever flight was a long haul to LA forty years ago. (Visiting relative who lived there at the time). Then Japan 20 years ago, South America just before Covid and we are off to NZ and Aus in a couple of weeks. I love European city breaks too.

RaininSummer · 08/01/2023 17:38

I can't be doing with any long travel times to get somewhere unless I was planning on spending at least a month in the location.

Lkydfju · 08/01/2023 17:39

I feel like it’s my unpopular opinion that some holidays just aren’t worth the travel

LakieLady · 08/01/2023 17:40

I've only ever flown long haul once and I bloody hated it. I was knackered for days after arriving and the first week I was away was pretty much a waste of time, I was too tired to enjoy it.

I was fortunate to get an upgrade for the return flight, which was much better, and I slept most of the way, but I still didn't like it. There's something about being stuck in a cramped space with loads of strangers that really makes me cranky after a couple of hours.

Even in Europe I prefer travelling by train.

Same here but I think more people are thinking it these days.
