Being asked to write your own reference

Looking for a new job.

two people I have asked for references have replied they are ‘delighted’ to be referees- but both have said similar: along the lines of ‘please write your own reference and I will send it on when requested’

is this common? I mean, I can do it but it would be quite nice for them to say what they think, but then I guess I know what they need to say for the particular position.

we aren’t talking large corporations here of course - I know references can be pretty bland in that environment.

a couple of the job applications have asked for references - and I am guessing something interesting might secure an interview

It’s really common to be asked to write your own reference. I’ve done it about 10 times in my career
