GP’s very busy at moment so don’t want to go unnecessarily. I have what seems like a bacterial sinus infection as I was sick with a virus around 2 weeks ago. And I am better about a week so have a feeling it’s now a bacterial/secondary infection. I have painful pressure when blowing my nose & really bad congestion with (sorry gross alert) really thick yellow nasal mucus. It’s literally a rubbery consistency which I haven’t had before and it is so stuck in my throat so much that I’ve caught my breath. Today it literally just came up my throat when I cleared it- horrible stuff! I’m coughing too but I’m sure that’s from all the post-nasal drip with sinuses. Would you wait it out or get checked? Also- any of your remedies to thin mucus out are welcomed!!

I'd buy a saline nasal spray

Lis1992 · 06/01/2023 19:46

@Blowyourowntrumpet Thanks- have all that and using it to no avail. Have the Neilmed sinus rinse too.

How long has it been like that?

Lis1992 · 06/01/2023 19:52

@Sleepychicken Only two days but came on very suddenly!

bellac11 · 06/01/2023 19:55

Lots of water as apparently it thins it out.

stbrandonsboat · 06/01/2023 19:58

Guiafenesin chesty cough medicine will thin the mucous and help it shift.

stbrandonsboat · 06/01/2023 19:59

Oh, and spicy food.

FabFitFifties · 06/01/2023 20:01

I've had this, you feel like you are blowing your brsins out - mine cleared itself.

jamsandwich1 · 06/01/2023 20:01

I also have this, I think it’s fine. I’ve had it about a week now and it’s getting a bit better

MaverickGooseGoose · 06/01/2023 20:02

Don't be a martyr, go and get the abs.

WhatLikeItsHard · 06/01/2023 20:04

Or, you were sick with one virus, and now you're sick with another one? Lots of germs flying about atm.

I wouldn't make a GP appointment if I'd been bringing up phlegm for 2 days. I doubt they would give you antibiotics.

Plenty of fluids, rest, over the counter decongestants, time - 3 weeks according to NHS website: www.nhs.uk/conditions/chest-infection/

YouWithoutEnd · 06/01/2023 20:06

NICE guidelines don’t recommended treating acute sinusitis unless it’s gone on longer than six weeks, vast majority of pathogens are viral and do not respond to antibiotics.

dammiejodger · 06/01/2023 20:07

I had this. Yellow snot. Had it got about 6 weeks. Saw pharmacist who said yellow is fine, green isn't. He advised a good multivitamin and decongestant

thaegumathteth · 06/01/2023 20:11

Whenever I have had sinusitis I've felt so unwell I can't move my head tbh

I'd give it a few days at least

SallyWD · 06/01/2023 20:11

I had exactly that but it didn't get better after 2 or 3 weeks so I eventually went to the doctor. They confirmed it was bacterial sinusitis and I needed antibiotics.

This

lots of clear fluids, an over the counter decongestant (not off the shelf) and rest.

you don’t need a gp appointment if it’s only been 2 days xx

Witchbitch20 · 06/01/2023 20:21

Pharmacist would probably be able to help.

I had similar last year and even though my snot was green, as it only lasted 2 weeks or so GP (private) said there wasn’t much to do but let it run its course.

Sudafed Tablets and a nasal spray were a life saver.

Hope you feel better soon.

Corilee2806 · 06/01/2023 20:33

I have the same and have for about 10 days now - initially did home remedies and pharmacist to see if it would clear and couldn’t have got any GP appointment over Xmas/new year anyway. It’s horrible and I feel your pain! Starting to feel a bit better but have felt very unwell and had very little energy, it’s really in my ears and head now and have found very little works in trying to get it out. I tried Sudafed but it gave me palpitations! Nasal sprays also ineffective I think when it’s this deep. Anyway GP said it’s viral (didn’t go just for this - mental health poor too) and I just need to rest and wait it out really. Hoping he was right!

Corilee2806 · 06/01/2023 20:34

Should say the Sudafed (as PP said get over the counter) was very effective just didn’t suit me and know it can have effects on a lot of people. Hope you find something that works for you!

BreatheAndFocus · 06/01/2023 20:35

This sounds a low key answer to your problem, OP, but as someone very prone to sinusitis, the best answer I’ve found is steam inhalation two or three times a day. No need to add anything - just boil a kettle of water, put it in a large bowl in the sink and stick your head over it with a towel over your head to keep the steam in (actually I hold mine across the middle of my nose because I don’t like the steam in my eyes). Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth for 5 minutes.
