I've done everything possible and still aged

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:27

I don't drink, never smoked, wear spf50 every day, moisturiser every day, use retinol, tretinoin, and so on. I sleep well 90% of the time, no children etc.
My diet isn't perfect, but this is all I can think of.
Despite this, I've still got crows feet, lines under my eyes and dark circles.
I am only 31 but presume the worst is yet to come. It's frustrating to already feel that I'm looking 'tired' at this age.
I've always looked after my skin well, yet I've still got these signs around my eyes already.

All I can think of is that they don't actually work? I'm using prescription strength products too. Does anyone else feel like this?

Or it can make them look stringy which is not a young look.

I run. A lot. I am pretty sure my face does not look 52 years old. My skin isn't bouncing around being stretched.

It wasn't a personal insult against you, although you may have just insulted people aged 52 and over. Or the rare few Mumsnetters who don't actually really look 10 to 25 years younger than they are. They must be around somewhere.

High impact exercise isn't good for skin. (Weight training is.) Boinging is just a fact. It's great for everything else. I'm sure nobody who loves running running and gets benefits from it will stop doing it because of an impersonal remark on Mumsnet.

Oh dear, OP. I can’t tell if your post is sarcastic or a joke?

Of course they don’t work! You can’t stop the ageing process. It’s just life. I think it’s awful when all women’s faces now look botoxed up to the eyeballs. It’s not for me.

Drink water, eat healthily and moisturise with vitamin E cream- that will help your skin and your body, but you can’t actually stop lines developing!

Something for the bouncy skin theory of running and skin, and yes, it's bollocks:

I am 25 and noticed very slight signs of aging. I have a stressful life! I looked it up and apparently it's sod all to do with me being stressed generally -

Humans start ageing around age 25 Shock who knew? 25 seems so young but nope, you do start ageing skin wise around that time

LeFeu · 09/01/2023 21:24

I’m a few years older than you OP, and I have lines around my eyes and mouth from smiling. Because I’m generally a happy person and enjoying most of my life! I don’t live a terrible lifestyle, I do moisture etc but try and look at your lines as a sign of a life well lived rather than of getting older x

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/01/2023 21:30

Running can make people look stringy which isn’t a young look.

echt · 09/01/2023 21:35

The only person I know who did not have lines of some sort at 30 did not have them at 50 either. They had one of those mouths that permanently smiles, so presumably didn't have to make any effort. I always envied her smileiness as I have complete resting bitch face. I have an expressive face, so more lines, and I'm 68 now.

SPF 50 on face, neck and the backs of hands. Sunglasses so you don't screw your eyes up. Prescription sunnies if needed. A hat in the sun. Don't flinch if others think you're a knob for doing this. I don't know if the UK weather forecasts do this, but here in Australia, BoM says every day the times when SPF is needed.

I know it's winter, I know it's the UK, but such a myth about mildness of the sun there.

My comment would only be regarded as an insult to people over 52 if they think their skin looking 52 is insulting, which I didn't say - only that I thought my skin looks younger than that. I'd bet that most people of 52 being told they looked younger would be pleased though.

And I didn't think you were personally insulting me, you don't know me, I was just saying that I am a runner and disagree with your assertion.

Running can make people look stringy which isn’t a young look.

Or naturally stringy or wiry people like to run, and they would still be that way whether they ran or not.

running is not good for your Fanny. Not by a long shot.

Why?

TheOrigRights · 10/01/2023 20:08

newmannewday · 10/01/2023 19:30

Why?

Impact on the pelvic floor. It's a risk factor for sure.

If your pelvic floor is weak then you need to work on strengthening it as running will make it worse. For most women it doesn't have to be a problem.

I love running so much and am fastidious about my exercises. I've had 2 children and am perimenopausal.

Tiddler39 · 10/01/2023 22:33

Running isn’t great for your figure either. Something to do with it causing you to burn muscle, which is why lots of runners have a flat arse and look ‘stringy’, as someone up-thread called it.

It’s also not a good way to lose weight when you’re perimenopausal apparently, as it releases cortisol which makes you store fat.

Resistance training will keep you looking younger than running.

Ok…

I think I’d be interested to see a woman over 45 who runs a lot and doesn’t look older than she is.
