I've done everything possible and still aged

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:27

I don't drink, never smoked, wear spf50 every day, moisturiser every day, use retinol, tretinoin, and so on. I sleep well 90% of the time, no children etc.
My diet isn't perfect, but this is all I can think of.
Despite this, I've still got crows feet, lines under my eyes and dark circles.
I am only 31 but presume the worst is yet to come. It's frustrating to already feel that I'm looking 'tired' at this age.
I've always looked after my skin well, yet I've still got these signs around my eyes already.

All I can think of is that they don't actually work? I'm using prescription strength products too. Does anyone else feel like this?

It is highly unrealistic to think you can look young forever. Aging is a fact of life I’m afraid!

BritAbroad101 · 06/01/2023 15:30

Aging is inevitable

Its part of nature

All the snake oil skin cream shite is bollox

RobertaFirmino · 06/01/2023 15:31

Stop using everything bar the retinol and use the savings for therapy to determine why you place so much value on not aging.

JamSandle · 06/01/2023 15:31

Ageing is natural. Youre not doing anything wrong but we all age.

We've just been so indoctrinated agent the natural aging process.

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:31

When I say my diet isn't perfect, I mean it's average. I'm a healthy weight and bmi, I mean I'm not eating only salads and juices etc. I do have sugar every day, white bread and so on.

I think a lot of it is down to genetics to be honest. I am 53, smoked for 20 years, drink loads, eat crap, hardly ever remember to moisturize and definitely don't use any of those chemicals you mention. I have no crows feet or dark circles and very few wrinkles. I get it from my mum who is 80 but looks younger.

I will probably encounter other health issues brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle but have good skin Grin.

PAFMO · 06/01/2023 15:32

Dark circles are usually genetic. If you have pale skin, you have dark circles.
None of the above products are supposed to stop aging, but to hydrate, help with turnover, and add glow. Give you the best skin FOR your age. Only surgery will do anything else.

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:32

I don't mind ageing, I just don't want dark circles that make me look tired really! I don't mind the lines so much, a little but it's more that I'm surprised I've already got them if that makes sense? I don't need therapy, there's nothing wrong with ageing. But I thought more like 40/50 I'd see this.

Genetics will play a big part. Something the beauty industry never seems to mention. I do not wonder why!

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:33

Yes I'm quite pale really.

Same. It's genetics.
I'm starting to age now in my 40s, but until recently passed for 10 years younger despite a wild life.

Don't regret growing old. It's a privilege denied to many.

ILoveeCakes · 06/01/2023 15:34

You might as well stop all that then and start to live a little. We'll all come round with a bottle and have a party!

Typo22 · 06/01/2023 15:34

Aging is nothing to be ashamed of, everyone ages (unless you tragically die young)

PAFMO · 06/01/2023 15:34

PS presume you aren't using retinol and tret together.
Do NOT stop using the spf, especially if you use vitamin A.

Sartre · 06/01/2023 15:35

Genetics play a part and there’s naff all you can do about that. Also, a few lines under your eyes in your early 30s is completely usual. I’m 29, don’t use expensive creams (just a basic face cream), have children and I only have a few lines under my eyes as you describe too as does everyone I know that’s my age.

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:35

Yes maybe I phrased it wrongly. There's nothing at all wrong with ageing, I just didn't expect such significant eye ageing quite early on in my life despite what I've done

OP posts:
Mushroomlady · 06/01/2023 15:36

Did your parents show signs of aging early? A lot of it is genetic unfortunately.

HappyNewYear2023 · 06/01/2023 15:36

Look at your parents skin. That's generally what you will get.

BreviloquentBastard · 06/01/2023 15:37

Thems the breaks OP. I'm 32, smoked for 10 years before quitting, drink a lot, never get enough sleep, moisturise once a week if I remember and always forget sunscreen and I get told I look 25, still get ID'd etc. Nary a wrinkle in sight. It's 99% genetics, they're cruel to some and kind to others. I think there's very little you can do to stave off aging, it'll happen when it happens.

Cheeeeeeese · 06/01/2023 15:39

I also get mistaken for much younger a lot, but it's just what I can see on myself.
My parents have very good skin for mid/late 50s as it happens, so hopefully I'll take after them!

Changemaname1 · 06/01/2023 15:40

How long have you been using tret etc ? Do see the other benefits from that ( eg for me my skin is smoother less oily and generally looks better than it used to aside from any anti aging benefits )

its a Long game , I genuinely feel I look better late 30s than I did in late 20s . Not younger before anyone piles on but my skin looks better , and I have less lines look less tired

I don’t think tret works for dark circles though sorry op

and yes you will still age obviously despite everything you are doing but I know what you mean about feeling it’s to soon . That’s how I felt . Stay consistent with the skincare and as an aside the cheapest and easiest thing that always works for me to look fresher faced
is drinking plenty of water

AlwaysCountYourPennies · 06/01/2023 15:40

Don't get caught up in the anti-aging crap!!!
Ageing is part of life, relax and focus on living rather than trying to stop the clock.

dreamingbohemian · 06/01/2023 15:40

Having a few lines around your eyes in your thirties is just normal, so I would maybe try not to think of it as 'aging' -- you're still so young! I don't mean this in a dismissive way, just that it's possible to change your perspective on this so that it's less depressing maybe?

I'm afraid that so much of this is just genetic. I come from a long line of women who did everything wrong and still look really young, it's just luck of the genes really. Good diet and skin care can certainly help but I think a lot of it is out of our control.

thisplaceisweird · 06/01/2023 15:42

It's genetics. I'm 40 and not a wrinkle in sight and my skincare routine doesn't include 'anti aging' ingredients, I eat and drink to excess, and smoked a lot in my youth. What I do have is very white hair! Who cares?!

Cincinnatus · 06/01/2023 15:43

As others have said, I think it’s down to genetics.

I also don’t smile much.. which is probably why I don’t have any wrinkles 😂
