Has anybody had hardware removed after a break?

I had a bad break just over 2 years ago, still swelling and pain - mostly around the plate used. The other hardware seems ok.

Hospital will take it out if I feel they would prefer not to touch it. I know it doesn’t always bring relief. So just wondering who has experience of this and did it bring relief to you? Or is this long term effects of a bad break

so in the spirit of AIBU, am I being to unreasonable to take it out?

My sister was having problems with pins and rod in her leg after 2 breaks,no trouble since having them removed.
