AIBU to say this is not safe to eat?

My partner planned to make an easy slow cooker curry today. When I came home yesterday, he had the raw chicken thighs in the fridge along with the curry sauce he is cooking it in (all this in the internal bowl of slow cooker might I add, so he could just pop it in the main slow cooker this morning to put on).

I have said I don't feel safe eating that when raw meat has been swimming in it all night, even if it is thoroughly cooked through.

YABU - DP is right, its safe
YANBU - do NOT eat the curry

Eh?

elm26 · 05/01/2023 19:31

I marinate my raw chicken chunks in home made curry sauce overnight in the fridge.

Marinading is completely normal, and safe.

tiredmama23 · 05/01/2023 19:32

I'm the worst person ever for food and cooking anxiety, and this would not faze me at all. In my mind it's safe because the sauce will be heated to the same temperature as the chicken when it cooks. So it becomes irrelevant that "raw chicken has been swimming in it all night" because the cooking process heats it to a temperature that kills any harmful bacteria - both on the meat and in the sauce.

Right ok everyone. I've misread what I read on Google when it said this, obviously cooking the liquid will make it as Safe.

I'm usually a good cook and marinade often! Just never in a sauce from a jar, usually just the powdered type of marinade lol

Whilst googling the difference between ‘marinade’ and ‘marinate’, I came across this. There’s even a little test at the end!

You'll be ok OP. I tend to sear beef first but put in chicken with stock and whatever else while it's still raw, it will all cook together.

Haven't opened the test but please tell me marinade is what you use and marinate is the act so I feel I have accomplished something outwith taking down my Christmas tree today.

watcherintherye · 05/01/2023 20:11

@OnTheRoadAgain1 Yes! You have it right strictly speaking, although apparently it’s becoming slightly blurred, as ‘marinade’ is now increasingly used as a verb. I noticed this in the thread and that’s why I googled!

You are indeed correct but as you obviously already knew this how come you're trying to count it as one of today's achievements? Grin Tsk.

lovelilies · 05/01/2023 20:17

@OnTheRoadAgain1
I moved a bush today AS WELL AS TAKING DOWN THE TREE. So there

I didn't know the difference between marinade and marinate for sure though.

OkPedro · 05/01/2023 20:27

@mmaddiemookins16mum
Your dinner sounds delicious! I haven't heard of chicken tonight for yonks didn't think it was sold in the shops any more

xprincessxjanetx · 05/01/2023 20:37

Of course it's safe...that's called marinading!!

xprincessxjanetx · 05/01/2023 20:37

Or marinating! Whatever.

NeonBoomerang · 05/01/2023 21:45

Well done for coming back, OP. I was sure you wouldn't.

Every day's a school day, eh?

MargieReen · 05/01/2023 21:50

This thread has reminded of my friend’s mum who poured the lemon and olive oil marinade from the chicken (uncooked) over a salad to dress it 😭

If you only use powder you don't marinade that's called a rub.

But - how do you think jars of sauce should be used if you don't thinks it's safe to pour them over the meat and cook them?!

TrishM80 · 05/01/2023 22:05

Has anyone said LTB yet?

ClaryFairchild · 05/01/2023 22:06

Unless he intends to cook it WITHOUT the marinade and then add the marinade back into the cooked meat - that's the ONLY way I could think that it would be unsafe.....

PriOn1 · 05/01/2023 22:12

Is the inner bowl of the slow cooker ceramic? Mine says that if the ceramic bowl is in the fridge, it should be left to stand for 40 minutes at room temperature before heating, otherwise it might crack.

I only discovered this after I’d put everything in the ceramic bowl and in the fridge.

Wallstick · 05/01/2023 22:32

I thought you were worried about putting raw chicken in a slow cooker. Although I agree I don't think I'd enjoy a day old jar marinade, it's not unsafe. I swear you have to fry off the chicken before slow cooking though? How is he frying it in jar sauce? Might as well just cook it normally on the hob.

piglet81 · 05/01/2023 22:34

Cancel the marinade.

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 05/01/2023 22:37

The only thing I can focus on is, is it marinade or marinate? The word has lost all meaning as I keep saying it in my head and it now sounds like klingon.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 05/01/2023 22:41

I believe (might be wrong!) that marinade is the noun, and marinate is the verb. "This is a very tasty marinade" vs "I marinated the chicken"

TangledWebOfDeception · 05/01/2023 23:02

You marinate the chicken in a marinade.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/01/2023 23:04

It - will - be - fine
