I hate to say it but when I was 18 I would have been a total Lydia. Thought myself excellent, liked to party and get attention from boys. I’d definitely have done something fucking stupid like run away with a handsome but twattish commander who didn’t know when to put his little solider away.

These days I’m far more Lizzie. A bit cynical, attracted to men with nice houses and like a to wind up arrogant obnoxious men.

Could never be a Jane. I’m not nearly nice enough Grin

Am I the only person who doesn't actually like any of them much?

No. I take Mary's part because she goes her own way without giving a fig what the rest of them do. She's the excluded middle sister who stands alone between the tight older two and the flighty younger ones and is frequently subject to ridicule. I love the way she scorns Brighton and the stuffy, formal assemblies she's constantly forced to go to, although her religious pontificating does get a bit much. She's hardly a prepossessing character, but I find her better than the rest.

I'd rather be like any of them than simpering, easily-led, stupid Kitty (and their mother) or insipid Jane, though. Sorry if I'm being severe upon my own sex and all that ...

I could never understand why Mrs Bennet didn't try to engineer a match between Mary and Mr Collins once Lizzie refused him. I thought that would have been a good match.

He wouldn't have been interested. He wanted a prettier, more socially competent wife.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/01/2023 18:08

Mary - the one who is neither attractive nor as talented as she'd like to be.

Kanaloa · 05/01/2023 18:08

Well, Lydia was selfish/careless, but she was also fifteen years old. How much do we really expect of what is essentially a young teenager? She wasn’t properly guided and supported, and she was young and silly, and made a mistake. Most teens make a selfish mistake at some point. Plus Wickham had form and was older. She wouldn’t be the first young girl taken in by a man with nefarious intentions.

There were also the wishes of his patron to consider. What was it she said? I'll look up the quote I think.

I think Lizzy would have been ill suited as the wife of Mr Collins even from the point of view of acceptability to Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

sallyfacts · 05/01/2023 18:20

'Mr. Collins, you must marry. A clergyman like you must marry. Choose properly, choose a gentlewoman for my sake; and for your own, let her be an active, useful sort of person, not brought up high, but able to make a small income go a good way. This is my advice. Find such a woman as soon as you can, bring her to Hunsford, and I will visit her.' Allow me, by the way, to observe, my fair cousin, that I do not reckon the notice and kindness of Lady Catherine de Bourgh as among the least of the advantages in my power to offer. You will find her manners beyond anything I can describe; and your wit and vivacity, I think, must be acceptable to her, especially when tempered with the silence and respect which her rank will inevitably excite.

Thank you!!

God Lady Catherine would have been fucking apoplectic if Mr Collins brought Lizzy back, what with her upstart pretensions and shade polluting powers 😂 she didn’t like her when she visited Rosing with Charlotte IIRC. She was really pissed off that she didn’t have a governess

I am convinced I am Mary - the quiz said I am Lydia 😮

CulturePigeon · 05/01/2023 18:44

Mary, based on the terrible singing and piano playing.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 05/01/2023 18:51

I was a Lydia as a teen, now I'd like to think I'm a Lizzie. I'm not an angel like Jane and I'm quick to see the worst in people. I'd also tell Lady Catherine to fuck off.

Yes, let us not forget the apparently very accomplished Georgia Darcy was also taken in at the same age!

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 05/01/2023 18:53

*Georgiana

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 05/01/2023 19:00

To be fair to Georgiana, Wickham had an unfair advantage with her as a childhood friend of the family. And she did tell her guardian before doing anything irreparable.

And her chaperone, Mrs Younge, a trusted figure, was doing all she could to encourage the elopement.

Letshaveablackcelebration22 · 05/01/2023 19:04

Lizzie mainly so I can snog Colin Firth!

GuyFawkesDay · 05/01/2023 19:18

BuzzFeed says Lizzie but I think this is because I am opinionated & bolshy!

Loved Greg Wise in S&S. I'd have fallen HARD for a Willoughby.

Still a bit annoyed that there's been no really decent adaptations of Persuasion.

UthredofBattenberg · 05/01/2023 19:47

I'd want to be Lizzie, but I'm more of a Mary. I'm not nice enough to be Jane and are not silly and stupid enough to be Kitty or Lydia.

So, Mary it is, no particular talents, not particularly pretty, tend to fade into the background 😆 no real interest in parties, clothes or romantic notions. Happy in her own company with a book.

I could be Charlotte Lucas, providing Mr Collins would spend all his time in the garden as she encouraged in the book!

lljkk · 05/01/2023 19:52

I'm actually Lizzie although I aspire to be Mary.

AudHvamm · 05/01/2023 19:57

As a teenager Kitty, but wanted to be Lizzy. Now I’m not sure, maybe Mary without the conceit around her talent.

I agree! It would never have worked.

I love the Ciaran Hinds version of Persuasion.

Couldn't bear to watch the new Netflux version.

I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would, but I am not a purist
