To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

"Jesus. Who wants to be measuring out mince down to a 100 gms per person"

It comes in a 500g pack. Hardly needs "measuring out" 🤣

"If you look at the jamie oliver recipe few posts back, look how much other stuff is there. Some people would put less and more meat."

Yes but that recipe feeds 6

Yes, the point still stands.
Eg.
800g swede and 800g potato.
Some people would do that, some people would do 500g each and have more meat.

Hence why such big variations in how much meat per portion.

For example

Who is out here spooning peas in this economy?! One per person – if you quarter them carefully it bulks it out as a decent side so you can cut back and not bother with the cottage pie at all.

You're right, of course. Perhaps just a picture of a pea?

thepatronsaintofbubblewrap · 04/01/2023 18:28

Do you think it's a misprint and they've not given you enough and slapped the wrong label on.

Begoniasforever · 04/01/2023 18:29

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 04/01/2023 18:24

And you still have to cook it!! What’s the point?!

I can’t understand it either.

DingDonkey · 04/01/2023 18:29

I think it's a lot. When I make tuna pasta for 2 it is one tin of tuna, when I make pork jowel pasta it's only about 100-150g of pork. We don't have small appetites either!

I'm trying to eat less meat for health and environmental reasons and it's amazing how you can make something quite meaty and tasty using vegetable plus some beef stock for that meaty flavour with significantly less meat.

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/01/2023 18:31

YABU. I buy a 500g for a cottage pie to feed 4 and there's usually some left for next day. Bulk it out with veg and red lentils if it's not enough to fill you up.

HeyyyMrNoodle · 04/01/2023 18:31

Unicorn2022 · 04/01/2023 16:54

It's not a lot of meat but I tend to identify as a family of four when it comes to portion sizes.

FleasNavidad · 04/01/2023 18:32

"Yes, the point still stands."

Most people cook to general recipes. Not many people are putting a 1kilo packet of mince in and using 200g of potato are they? 500g mince is intended to feed around 4 so the answer to OPs question is that 240g is fine for 2 adults.

throwaway2023 · 04/01/2023 18:33

Definitely depends what you add to it as well, how much mash you use etc

So mine the other day was 500g mince and made 5 portions
I weighed each total portion after cooking and it was 400g cottage pie portioned so I guess similar to ready meal size?

GiltEdges · 04/01/2023 18:33

Ostryga · 04/01/2023 16:54

Gosh maybe I am just very greedy then! It looks tiny.

To be fair I do use a standard pack of mince for 2 adults and a 6 year old with no leftovers so that may be where I’m going wrong.

Wow, they must be enormous portions!

Absolutely no competitive under-eating in this house and a 500g pack of mince would easily make enough bolognese for 2 adults and one child across two days, so basically 4 adult/2 child portions.

pinneddownbytabbies · 04/01/2023 18:35

A palm-sized portion is correct for the protein element of a meal.

londonmummy1966 · 04/01/2023 18:36

I just looked the recipe up - it includes 225g of potato and 60 g of peas per person so the mince is plenty. TBH I'd be a bit disappointed that the pie didn't include more veg - eg carrots and passata as well as onion and puree.

LunaRegis · 04/01/2023 18:36

If I buy 500g I usually get 6 meals from this. You are greedy 🐷

Herejustforthisone · 04/01/2023 18:37

That’s plenty. People eat so much.

Imissmybabygirl · 04/01/2023 18:37

We use 500g pack for our cottage pie for family of 5 and additional vegetables on the side...

AuntieMarys · 04/01/2023 18:37

That's loads! I made a spaghetti bolognese with 250g yesterday....that's 4 meals for the 2 of us

StaunchMomma · 04/01/2023 18:38

Hello Fresh do portions nearer to health guidelines than most people will be used to.

If you're the kind to eat a 4 serving between 2 then it will seem small but they're very tasty, rich meals that are easily padded out with veg.

mourndayclub · 04/01/2023 18:38

I often use 750g for 3 adults and 4 boys

pairofrollerskates · 04/01/2023 18:39

I've always found the portion sizes in Hello fresh to be perfect. 500g mince more Han sufficient for 4 people, so 250 good for 2. 10 g doesn't even count!!

That was a general example, not exact example. And lots of us don't cook exactly to recipe.

Ok. Let's do different example.
Overal dinner with meat, veg and base carb may weight 500g.
Some people chose to have 150g of meat and 350g of other stuff. Others will chose 250g of meat and 250g of other stuff. It's personal preference, hence the difference between people's portions for meat.
People are not discussing JUST cottage pie.

But to hello fresh cottage pie, it has 450g potatoes, I would do 300g for two, and way less peas, but have more than 240g meat. Probably 400g. Would still end up with very much same size portion, just different proportions.

Squabbledee · 04/01/2023 18:43

I make dinner for 6 with a 500g pack so you are being unreasonable.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 04/01/2023 18:44

I do bolognese for 2-3 people with 250g of mince. By the time I’ve added onions, peppers, mushrooms and the sauce ingredients there’s loads, plus the pasta to bulk it out, and for cottage pie, you have the potatoes. So yes, I’d say it’s plenty.

boboshmobo · 04/01/2023 18:44

We get hello fresh every week but veggie and it's always loads of food for two people . I imagine the 4 portions are double so I think your portions are too big normally .

Herroyal · 04/01/2023 18:45

That’s the right amount. It’s an ingredient not the sole meal
