To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

I just used half a pack of 500g for 3 person bolognese tonight and we had some scraps left from that

OffredsNose · 05/01/2023 20:27

I always get a 500g pack and split it into 4 portions. Lasts DH and I two meals. This week I’ve made chilli con carne with it and shepherds pie.

it’s plenty

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/01/2023 20:29

Seems normal to me. I think of 400/500 as the right amount for a family of 4/5 so that would work out…

Bleachmycloths · 05/01/2023 20:37

240gm is fine for 2 people.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/01/2023 20:38

No wonder we have a climate crisis the amount of meat some people eat!

Pretty sure my meat consumption still produced less emissions last year than 2 average guest of COP 27 in just that week.

spinachmonster · 05/01/2023 21:00

I use one can of black beans or green lentils in place of mince for two - 60p a can. Tastes great! Much cheaper than mince.

Cakeorchocolate · 05/01/2023 21:34

We use a 500g to feed 3 of us for 2 meals so essentially 6.

240 sounds enough for 1 meal for 2.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 05/01/2023 22:20

@LuckySantangelo35 really? You are reprimanding people for eating? Next you’ll reprimand them for existing

bet you eat stuff, and buy stuff, and travel, and just “be”, why be a lecturing hypocrite?

Nchangeagain · 05/01/2023 22:27

@Ostryga Actually, 100-125g of mince is the recommended portion size for an adult, so that sounds about right. I agree that it doesn't look much though, but once you've added an onion, carrots and peas, etc, it will be a decent sized portion each.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/01/2023 22:29

Clearly I make far too much as a normal 400/500g pack of mince does 2 of us with a small portion left over for next day. 240g I would use but it would feel small and I would add some soy mince.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/01/2023 22:38

There's some really frugal meals on this thread. I did a chilli for 4 adults ((3 males plus me) on Xmas eve and even with 600g of farm shop top quality mince plus beans and chopped tomatoes etc , plus rice- it certainly wasn't enormous portions and we used it all

I love this. Are you very fat greedy pig or are you thin so it’s socially acceptable to have large portions?

Wow just wow @autumndays123 Obviously OP must be overweight because they prefer larger portions of protein in their meals? The mere question is fat shaming! And if OP is thin? Please enlighten me.... It would be acceptable or are they on a slippery slope to obesity or ????

T1Dmama · 05/01/2023 23:24

I’ve done a spaghetti bolognaise tonight for 2, 500g of mince and there’s enough left for 2 more meals each… I do add A LOT of mushrooms, peppers, onions, courgette etc though…. So I suppose it depends on the meal…

XenoBitch · 05/01/2023 23:27

I use 500g mince for 4 portions.
Mince shrinks a lot when you cook it. I always add a ton of veg etc.

Thatboymum · 05/01/2023 23:33

We do 800g for 4 people in our house so by our standards that’s a tiny amount like a young child size portion

LovelyLisa2 · 06/01/2023 06:17

I always use 500g for a family of 4.

Apart from your view on the mince, is Hello Fresh worth doing? I've been pondering for ages and just can't decide either way!

If you can get a good offer it’s not too bad. I paid £39 for 4 meals for 2. I definitely wouldn’t pay full price. I’m doubt I’ll get it again though.

As an avid meat eater 240g is plenty for us. One of the issues today is we have all got used to eating more meat than required (as it is nice and tasty for those of us who like it). In one of my cookery books from the 70s they have 75g of mince per person, I do find that quite stingy!

PinkCherryTree · 06/01/2023 07:51

Hello fresh mince is vacuum packed and pretty solid until you break it up which means it looks a lot less than the loosly packed supermarket mince.
Yes 240g is plenty for two.

TheGuv1982 · 06/01/2023 08:07

It’s not enough, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

I got a cheap deal on groupon and tried it. Wasn’t wowed. Meat quality not great eg the mince is 15% fat. Seemed a hassle opening lots of sachets and plastic packs.

Bywayofanupdate · 06/01/2023 10:11

We use 400g for 4, and usually have left overs for another meal

Bignanny30 · 06/01/2023 11:54

That’s about what I would use. If you want more then add some lentils, they absorb the flavour too and make it tastier in my opinion. Why would you need a recipe from ‘hello fresh’ to make cottage pie anyway ??
