To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/01/2023 19:24

We have it for the 3 of us. Dd is a teen. Dh eats one large meal and a snack so he needs a disproportionately large amount. I usually find the portions ok if I add a few mushrooms or a bit of extra veg.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 04/01/2023 19:24

I think @Autumndays123 quedtion was fair enough,

someoneone overweight might be used to overeating after all, and have a different “normal portion size

OP, I think it sounds very small, but let us know how it works out. We never order hello fresh or ready meals as portions too small for us

(our “normal” is about 1.5 times that of other people’s normal 😁)

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 04/01/2023 19:24

It would be fine for me and DH assuming there were potatoes and veg as well. We don't weigh things but I'd probably assume about 80g for me because I prefer smaller portions of meat and 160g for him.

if he was on his own he'd just eat all the mince and ignore the rest. He's a bit of a Neanderthal when it comes to food.

LoveAHolidayOrTwo · 04/01/2023 19:26

Thats enough for six people plus a few portions to freeze.

StridTheKiller · 04/01/2023 19:30

I allow for 1 squiggle of mince per person, more than enough.

anon1968 · 04/01/2023 19:33

So when we first did hello fresh I thought exactly the same. Was pleasantly surprised how there was enough and no waste of having to freeze.

Jimboscott0115 · 04/01/2023 19:37

Thats a quarter of a pound each, no? Slightly more even.

If you don't think the equivalent of a quarter pounder burger is large enough then yeah it's an appetite issue. I would personally prefer more but that doesn't mean they's not enough.

Also, getting Hello Fresh and complaining about portion sizes/value for money is a little... Naive.

You can eat more meat than 120g and not be oberweight....

True, but if you are flabbergasted at the size of what should be an acceptable portion for an adult, the chances are you massively overeat other foods too.

Willdenytothedeath · 04/01/2023 19:44

500g pack here feeds 2 adults and 2 small eater young children. Often theres enough for one person for lunch the next day.

The hello fresh meat portion sounds measly to me.

KarmaStar · 04/01/2023 19:45

Try quorn mince you'll get more

Threeboysandadog · 04/01/2023 19:47

I use 400g/500g (depending on where I buy the pack) for 5 of us. We are four adults and a 16 year old. By the time I add carrot, onion and turnip for mince, tomatoes and kidney beans for chilli or mushrooms and tomatoes for spaghetti bolognaise, it’s more than enough. Iceland do a 360g pack and I add a handful of porridge oats to eke it out and no one has ever noticed. We are not small eaters either!

Saz12 · 04/01/2023 19:53

It’s probably about how much I’d cook per person, but that’s because mince-based meals are ones I’d hugely bulk out with tinned lentils, extra veg, etc. If I’m cooking chicken a small whole bird would do one meal (for 3 of us), with rosaries and 3 portions of carbs veg & something green & leafy - I’d probably get a spare chicken leg for a salad lunch the next day for one, & stock but no MN chicken. We don’t eat meat every day though.

It depends a bit on the rest of your diet - and probably a bunch of things like genes, gut biome, etc. I’m female, 6’ and a dress size 10, so not overweight. DH is tall and “narrow” with a bit of a post-Christmas tummy, DC are tall and skinny. The guidance is based on averages, and nobody is average, so it seems daft to call people rude names.

knittingaddict · 04/01/2023 20:00

You might be surprised.

We have gousto and at the beginning I looked at the quantities and thought "no way". We are both a bit greedy, but I have always found the amounts plenty and we are never hungry afterwards.

When I used to cook a chilli I would use 500g and there was always enough for two meals. 240g should be fine.

scottishnames · 04/01/2023 20:06

Quorn is ultraprocessed (so they say www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/feb/12/quorn-revolution-rise-ultra-processed-fake-meat ) and not digestible for some people. I don't understand how anyone thinks it or similar products is healthy.
Give me a lentil any day.

HaggisWurst · 04/01/2023 20:09

DH, DS and I could eat 400g between us in one go but if I get 500g, I stretch it to two meals.

TerfOnATrain · 04/01/2023 20:10

I buy those little 250g ones for DH and I now the DC have gone.

it’s definitely enough for bolognese or cottage pie for two, I do always add a few veg to both such as carrots, onions, peppers or peas to add further bulk.

250g will also do four small patty burgers where we have two each in a bun again with added bulk such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, etc.

Dh can't eat it. Apparently violent reactions from both ends are common. Mycoprotein strongly disagrees with many.
It should have a health warning. Lots of people are allergic to mould and wouldn't know it can give them reaction. I think someone died as well.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/01/2023 20:14

I

EarringsandLipstick · 04/01/2023 20:16

I think it depends on the meal.

If I make cottage pie, I use quite a lot of mince (so 250g would be too little), as the recipe calls for it. I don't love cottage pie for that reason (too 'meaty')

I make a large Bolognese with 1kg mince, and that will do 3 teens / nearly teens + me for Bolognese dinner, with seconds / lunch as well as enough for a large lasagne.

Ostryga · 04/01/2023 16:55

This is an extremely good point! I think I may have lost sight of normal portion sizes.

The portion control you get from HF has really helped me understand what the 'right' size is. It's contributed to my 20 lb weight loss last year.

Previously we were eating huge portions and this has really helped. One decent size portion each and no 'seconds'.

TiaraBoo · 04/01/2023 20:35

@Ostryga im sure they vacuum pack it, it’s the smallest packaged meat I’ve ever seen. BUT it is enough once you’ve taken it out of its packaging.

I’m not sure I really agree with this. How can there be just one homogenised portion size that’s right for everyone?! The notion seems ridiculous.

Lots of reasons why a larger portion size might be appropriate without venturing into overeating territory. And lots of reasons why a smaller portion size may be more suitable.

I absolutely agree that lots of people get portion sizes wrong, but it’s the idea that there’s one single portion size that’s “right” for all really irritates me.

xprincessxjanetx · 04/01/2023 20:48

DH and I just became vegetarians (I once was in my teens for a couple of years) but in the past it would depend on what I was making.

500g mince used to get 4 generous portions of lasagne/cottage pie/enchiladas/bolognese

But, if I made burgers or meatballs I used to get 2 portions out of it.
