People in small boats

EndlessRain1 · 04/01/2023 14:58

With everything that is going on in the UK at the moment, can it really be true that one of the top 5 priorities in the country is to stop "people in small boats"?

I mean, I know a lot of people are against immigration in this form, but in the grand scheme of the shit show this country has been in the last couple of years that is in the top 5 priorities/ actions?

AIBU to think that's insane?

When it comes to immigration polls seem to show many do want skilled labour but small boats is an issue for majority.

Which means putting it in priorities matches what many want to see

MrsAvocet · 04/01/2023 18:11

I think it is very important, but I'm afraid I doubt very much that Mr Sunak's reasons for thinking it is important are the same as mine. It's a rallying call for wavering Tory voters.

SallyWD · 04/01/2023 18:12

I agree. I felt it was pandering to populism to include that. So many other more pressing priorities for the country.

Georgeskitchen · 04/01/2023 18:18

When you say people in small boats are you referring to young men in their 20s mostly from Albania which is not a war zone.the NHS is on its arse, the demand for housing is at all time high, getting a GP appointment is as rare as hen's teeth. Where do you suggest we put these people?
No point comparing the to the Ukrainian people who have come over, they are genuine refugees fleeing a genuine war

MajorCarolDanvers · 04/01/2023 18:23

Small boats are killing people - of course we need to stop this.

Tholeont · 04/01/2023 18:25

The people in small boats are from many different countries - Syria (legal routes now closed), Afghans who missed the evacuation, Eritrea (avoiding endless conscription), Iranians who have publicly disagreed with the repressive regime and oppression of women there - for example. Albanians, yes, some admittedly just in search of improved economic opportunities and therefore not refugees, others fleeing blood feuds, or, as in the case of women I’ve recently come across, misogyny. Most aim for the UK because of ties of family, language or community. No Ukrainians, because legal and safe routes are available to them.

Oblomov22 · 04/01/2023 18:38

I did think of all his top 5 promises were a load of tosh though.

ShutTheFrontDory · 04/01/2023 18:51

List the top 5 in your opinion then OP!

Agreed! I wish people would stop virtue signalling over Albanian men entering the country illegally. I thought we were meant to be protective over women's rights and our daughters...

LlynTegid · 04/01/2023 18:56

Process asylum claims quickly, stop people being in hotels for long periods without doing any work.

And everyone can do one thing to make it less attractive for some of those men- don't take illegal drugs, the trade of which is allegedly largely controlled by Albanians.

Forever42 · 04/01/2023 18:58

People smuggling/trafficking is a terrible humanitarian issue. The government don't care about that though, they just want to appeal to their basest voters who don't like foreigners.

RoseslnTheHospital · 04/01/2023 16:29

Getting new laws passed isn't going to stop the crossings though. It might mean more people are sent to third countries or deprived of support or housing once here. But kind of law Sunak will want to pass will not actually help.

What about the people already here who need housing

It's unsustainable

lollipoprainbow · 04/01/2023 19:06

Absolutely a priority.

lollipoprainbow · 04/01/2023 19:07

@ShutTheFrontDory well said

jtaeapa · 04/01/2023 19:07

Well it's causing the deaths of people on those boats!

Mamamia7962 · 04/01/2023 19:08

Of course this should be in the top 5. We have agreed to pay France £66 million a year to stop these boat crossings, that's in addition to all the other millions we have paid them. The French don't want them so they just turn a blind eye. The people smugglers know this. These are mainly economic migrants, they are not in danger in France, Germany etc. They don't need to make these crossings.

We have a population of over 67 million in this country. To all those saying let these people come over, when would you say enough is enough a population of 70 million, 80 million?

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 04/01/2023 19:09

It's an absolute priority. Our services cannot possibly cope.

Mamamia7962 · 04/01/2023 19:14

Forever42 - Don't be so ignorant, that's why we're in this mess in the first place because when Tony Blair introduced his open door policy anyone who voiced concerns was shouted down as being racist.

Moat Albanians are not granted asylum. Apparently the majority of Albanians who were granted refugee status were women who had been trafficked. The men are usually declined, just at glacial speed.

RoseslnTheHospital · 04/01/2023 19:22

@woodhill the lack of affordable housing (affordable rentals) is nothing to do with asylum seekers who are not housed in that kind of accommodation. Neither is it anything to do with a lack of social housing for those on housing waiting lists. It's a political decision not to invest in affordable and social housing.

Those who feel that asylum seekers are responsible for putting too much strain on our public services, what evidence are you basing that on?

purpledalmation · 04/01/2023 19:23

We also need to allow more people in to work, like Albanians.

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 04/01/2023 15:20

Watch “Years and Years” by Russell T. Davies for one of the most heart wrenching fictional portrayals of this. I hadn’t been aware of a lot of the particular issues and mechanics and this did really make me think

Best show I’ve ever seen- painfully brilliant.
Can you rewatch it anywhere?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/01/2023 19:25

It’s not my top 5 priority but possibly the top 10- however you need a safe legal route before punishing the boat crossers. In fact before all of that you need a home office fit for purpose!

jtaeapa · 04/01/2023 19:26

purpledalmation · 04/01/2023 19:23

I think we need to get the people of any nationality who are already here into work. If we get more people in, we will need more school places and more hospital beds and more housing etc. All of which are in extremely short supply. Getting people in works for places that are less densely populated than here.
