UTI help

Just started antibiotic for UTI (1 dose), however since seeing dr I've developed a fever and blood in urine. Is this expected/ok to just continue treatment, or do I need to go to A&E?

Blood in urine is normal for a UTI however I don't believe a fever is. Do you have any sickness or pain in your side? I had a nasty UTI last year that spread to my kidneys.

namechangepee · 02/01/2023 18:32

No sickness or pain in side

They are both known symptoms of UTI aren't they?

I don't know, I had 10 weeks of a UTI that wouldn't shift last year and whilst I had blood a lot, the only time I had a fever was when it was a kidney infection.

When did you take the first tablet? It can take a few hours for it to start working. I do sympathise though. The other week my wee looked like Rose Wine and it felt like I was passing razor blades (sorry if that is TMI). I started to feel better a few hours after the second tablet.

Oh that's a relief. Im a single parent with DD & nobody close by, so was hoping I didn't need to go to A&E. Only took first tablet 2hrs ago. Yes to rose and razors.

If you've developed a high temperature and have taken a few doses of the antibiotics I would go back to the doctor as the antibiotics should have started working, it shouldnt be getting worse. It's very easy for a UTI to spread to become a kidney infection and from that to become sepsis (I've had it multiple times in the last few years and ended up in hospital).

Apologies I should've read the OP better, just seen it was only one dose

Enfys1982 · 02/01/2023 18:54

Also I didn’t have a fever or any pain in my back. My main symptoms were constantly needing to go to the loo and not being able to hold it, blood in my urine and when wiped aftewards and the awful razor blade feeling.

Mary46 · 02/01/2023 18:54

Hope u feel ok soon they awful. I think continue with antibiotic.

I had a uti spread to my kidneys and I didn't get any symptoms other than a fever and mild back pain (which I put down to sleeping funny) until I had a seizure. Ended up needing IV antibiotics in hospital for a few weeks.
You should definitely go to a and e if it isn't better after 24 hours of taking antibiotics.

@namechangepee I found your thread. How are you getting on? Its been 24hrs of nitrofurantoin here but still having fever and back pain :(

namechangepee · 04/01/2023 00:04

The symptoms reduced significantly after my 2nd dose. Fever took almost 24hrs to resolve.
I think back pain means it's spread to kidneys and will need IV antibiotics.

I had a UTI spread to my kidneys years ago and didn’t need IV antibiotics but was sternly told off by me GP for letting it get that far. He gave me stronger AB’s, and even stronger painkillers that made me feel like I was floating around the room hahah.

Contact your GP and tell them your symptoms have worsened, you will probably be prescribed stronger antibiotics. I have had several kidney infections and never been given IV antibiotics, even when I collapsed with a raging fever.
Please drink as much water as you can, and feel better soon.
