To think 4.70 for a pret sandwich is too expensive?

A sandwich. Not a baguette or flatbread etc. am sure they used to be about £3.50 not so long ago.

Yes they used to have new offerings more often

Pret is no better than a supermarket one.

That just really isn’t true tho. Pret sandwiches are completely different to supermarket ones. Why would you say they’re no better when they clearly, markedly are? (fresher ingredients, more/different fillings, better quality, different packaging etc)

AriettyHomily · 02/01/2023 20:45

It's £7.50 for a cheese and ham toastie in my local coffee shop.

I noticed it's £5 for a meal deal in Sainsbury’s now.

I work in the square mile and since I've been back in the office there are greggs everywhere and they are packed. Wasn't like that a year ago.

I forgot Benji's! That was my go to in my 20s. I think i used to get an omelette baguette.

I rarely buy sandwiches from chains these days but I think Pret is far nicer than supermarkets. The posh cheese and pickle is my favourite.

You were on here screaming for lockdown. Own the consequences

Who's that addressed to?

Pret donated to the charity I worked for too.

darisdet · 02/01/2023 21:02

Is that one of the long baguette-type? I think the others are cheaper? I like the half baguette tuna and cucumber, less than £4.70, or a box salad with chicken.

Coffee is nice, agree with pps.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 02/01/2023 21:11

I've really noticed the price rises, I had time to kill recently so thought I'd pop into Pret for lunch - the sandwiches are waaaay more expensive than they used to be, as are M&S'. I don't always have time/space in my bag for home-made sandwiches to take with me but sandwiches bought on the go are definitely more of a rarity than they used to be.

saraclara · 02/01/2023 21:20

I'm not sure why pret is being singled out. It's the same at every care/restaurant/takeaway.

saraclara · 02/01/2023 21:20

Care? Cafe

girlfriend44 · 02/01/2023 21:26

Yes a rip off, just like Costa Coffee and Starbucks etc.

BHRK · 02/01/2023 21:26

I love Pret and the food is far better than a supermarket sandwich. I’ll pay their prices. If you don’t like it or can’t afford just… don’t go?

daisychain01 · 02/01/2023 21:39

Loaf of bread £1.50 = 16 slices (8 sandwiches) = 30p per sandwich

Marg/spread = 20p

Filling options = chicken / cheese / ham / tuna = 40p

  • salad = 10p

Cost price of sandwich =£1.00

£4.60 is a massive mark up.

They'd sell a lot more sandwiches if they kept the price down. They'll lose a lot of customers by being so greedy.

caveat - I never buy sandwiches, they're a complete rip off.

Goldenbear · 02/01/2023 21:40

I think the Waitrose Sweet chilli chicken wrap is very good and that is about £4.50 so I wouldn't say Pret is particularly expensive. I wouldn't be able to justify those prices 5 days a week but 3 is ok when I'm not WFH. DH will go to a food market nearly every day and that is more than that but he works long hours and he needs that reason to leave the office and get out. A packed lunch is not going to get him out.

Goldenbear · 02/01/2023 21:42

Tbf when I was pregnant with my 15 year old DS I spent about £10 a day in Pret and that was 2007!

beejeez · 02/01/2023 21:52

fajitaaaa · 02/01/2023 17:57

3.50 will get you a rubbish supermarket one though. Inflation innit.

£3.50 will get you a sandwich, drink and a bag of crisps in a supermarket (meal deal)!

The sandwich is rubbish

laloue · 02/01/2023 21:53

Their macaroni with kale (now ruined by the addition of tapenade) is now over £6! Nearly fell over…bang goes my payday lunch treat .

Same. I used to get a coffee/croissant on way to work and then my lunch..... Expensive but it was my little treat to alleviate the boredom of my job.

walnutmarzipan · 02/01/2023 21:56

Pret used to do the most delicious wrap - tuna nicoise. Also used to do a lovely selection of soups - not sure they're as good now. But still miles better than a supermarket meal deal.

I still miss the tuna nicoise wrap! And it was probably a decade ago that they stopped selling it!

ditherydotty · 02/01/2023 22:03

I worked out (had a lot of time in my hands the last few days) I've spent £468 on meal deals over the last year!

my resolution this year is home packed lunch and only a cafe / meal deal on payday.

I actually don't even like meal deals much, it's just me being lazy.

And there's the rent, council/business tax, energy costs, the equipment, the wages, the admin stuff at head office, the advertising...

You don't seriously think that everything beyond the ingredients is profit?

Glitterybee · 02/01/2023 22:09

I had a Burger King meal today and it was £10.29!
medium size - fries, drink, chicken burger.

I couldn’t believe it!

Goldenbear · 02/01/2023 22:35

walnutmarzipan, yes, I would buy the soups or double sandwiches as I didn't eat breakfast and was 'eating for two' and convincing myself this was ok.

walkinthewoodstoday · 02/01/2023 22:38

Seems fine. It's £3-5 for a hot drink these days
