A sandwich. Not a baguette or flatbread etc. am sure they used to be about £3.50 not so long ago.

@red4321 Early 2000s I think, used to be able to get a pint of tea and an egg sandwich for about £2.50 😁
I did hear a rumour they were coming back and there was one opening near leadenhall Street, I've not seen it with my own eyes though

Toddlerteaplease · 02/01/2023 18:51

Same with Cafe Nero. Toastiest and panini's are almost £5. Sausage rolls £3.95

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 02/01/2023 18:52

It is only too expensive if no one buys it.

I remember rows and rows of very similar cheese-based white baguettes. But an absolute bargain in terms of carb content for your money.

Tesco sandwiches are dire

No they aren't. They have a fabulous selection of fillings and the sandwiches always taste fresh. I really think that some people are boringly snobbish about food.

I think eating is just expensive at the moment. I paid £15 for a jacket potato with cheese and chilli at the garden centre the other day. I wonder what it'll do for the obesity crisis.

No offense but you are a bloody idiot if you pay that for a jacket potato, yes eating has gone up but that is pure daft.

Because I don't want to carry a packed lunch around London the whole morning. And I don't always have suitable ingredients for a nice sandwich at home (appreciate this is fixable with better organisation).

Because it's a big hardship carrying a few things about, if you don't want to pay the price for convience.

I think the point is that a bought sandwich used to be around £3 and now it’s £5, 18 months later. My salary hasn’t gone up by that percentage! Ditto for gym classes - once £7, now £10. Again, close to a 50% increase. I’m finding myself increasingly priced out.

But guess what people are using at this price so blame them, if they didn't sell And this was price they wouldn't produce them.

iklboo · 02/01/2023 19:06

Well, yes, but why buy sandwiches? Much cheaper and nicer to make your own. You can have your perfect combination and filling that way.

It's a pain in the arse making them the night before. I start early and I'm not standing making butties at silly o'clock. I only work in the office once a fortnight now and don't tend to eat sandwiches at home, so ingredients would go off before they were used up. And I can't be arsed making mustard / truffle mayo or buying the nicer breads & rolls they use.

Pineconederby · 02/01/2023 19:09

@Againstmachine - you’re right, it’s tough for those who can no longer afford to participate though (and I mean in the gym classes, not the Pret sandwiches!).

Well if you can't be arsed pay the price or make your own, although you. Seem not to eat between trips to work.

I just make my own now. Loved Pret but just too expensive.

This sadly

But it is idiots who pay it who re problem, if people didn't pay they couldn't charge.

antipodeancanary · 02/01/2023 19:12

If anyone has the O2 app or uses Virgin media, you can get a free sausage roll, bacon bap etc with a code on your phone on Thurs Friday or Saturday. Also a cup of tea (once) any day of the week. Hope this helps the frugal amongst you. I use it all the time.

antipodeancanary · 02/01/2023 19:14

re above - this is from Greggs

meatballsoup · 02/01/2023 19:16

@rred4321 - Thank you. I've only ever heard of Pret on here. Mostly pasty shops around my way😄

ThinWomansBrain · 02/01/2023 19:16

I used to like the half baguettes they did at breakfast time - egg and smoked salmon., an occasional treat
I got one just before Christmas, but I'm sure they've more than doubled in price.

NotMeNoNo · 02/01/2023 19:17

Pret sandwiches are made on the day at the cafe I believe. As are Gregg's but nearly everywhere else that sell packaged sandwiches come from a sandwich factory, and you can tell. I'm willing to pay a bit extra for fresh food.

HotChoxs · 02/01/2023 19:18

It's £8 on London South Bank Confused

Pac35 · 02/01/2023 19:20

The other day I went in for a Christmas sandwich at pest and it was £6.30! I just left, way too expensive

BMW6 · 02/01/2023 19:20

Depends on the filling. Depends on your personal income.

Bit of a daft question really. 🙄

Jarstastic · 02/01/2023 19:23

I’ve noticed Pret being more expensive than it was. Was more apparent when I went into Itsu after a while and it seemed good value whilst previously had thought of as fair bit more expensive.

BananaBlue · 02/01/2023 19:23

Pret - ham cheese and tomato croissant yum yum.

Call me greedy but I often got 2.

Went in a few weeks back and was wtf at the price of 1 4quid I think?

I left it 😢

namechangeforthisoneeee · 02/01/2023 19:27

We've got to keep putting our prices up, have you not noticed prices rising EVERYWHERE?! Yes our ingredients are also increasing in price and as a business we have to pass that on or go bust. I'm not Pret by the way, but I own independent coffee shop and it's really flipping hard
