A sandwich. Not a baguette or flatbread etc. am sure they used to be about £3.50 not so long ago.

I think it's because they do the coffee subscription, so their loyal customers are getting their drinks at a very low cost per drink... but they need to make money somewhere else and their food is now more expensive.

Chippy1234 · 02/01/2023 18:17

Greggs is vile (although it’s cheap rather like McDonalds) so people use it.

The sausage roll is grey mush although it’s cheap…

Thepeopleversuswork · 02/01/2023 18:17

Too expensive for what? Who defines too expensive? If people will pay it (and by definition some must be) it's not too expensive.

There are no price controls and you don't have to shop there. If you don't want to spend that money don't.

Silly question.

fajitaaaa · 02/01/2023 18:18

I like their coffee

I like Pret but I do tend to buy it when on business (and therefore expensing). Far superior to a supermarket sandwich. For a start, it's made that day and not soggy!

And it's freeGrin

ILoveeCakes · 02/01/2023 18:19

A few weeks ago, someone said they been asked if they wanted a "coffee boy" who buys them coffee as a kink or something/a tip for enjoying (ahem!) their IG pics

Is there such a thing as a "sandwich boy"?

PollyCreo · 02/01/2023 18:21

Electricity has gone up
The price of grain has gone up

Do you expect Pret (or any other company) to operate at a loss?

Lindy2 · 02/01/2023 18:22

I do think it's expensive. A Tesco sandwich, drink and snack is £3.40 in their meal deal. A Pret sandwich might be a bit more fancy but to be honest I think the taste/quality difference is negligible, whereas the cost is not.

I work from the now so I can prepare a fresh lunch at home. When I was officed based though I preferred a shop bought lunch rather than a pack lunch. A pack lunch always felt a bit soggy and sad by lunchtime.

I do think a lot of these places are simply going to price themselves off the market. I'm not sure what the answer is but many people will be looking to cut back and premium priced coffees and sandwiches are likely to be pretty high up on the things I can economise on list.

DillDanding · 02/01/2023 18:25

I love Pret. I only ever have soup or salad, so I am not an expert - but £4.70 isn't a lot for a sandwich, surely?

meatballsoup · 02/01/2023 18:27

Not the point I know but is Pret like a posh Cafe?. What kinda sandwich do you get for that price?. I'm guessing its not your regular cheese sarnie? Prob cheese & grapes and that sort of wierd stuff

EmmaDilemma5 · 02/01/2023 18:28

For me it depends on the ingredients. An egg mayo or cheese and pickle, I'd not pay more than £2.50.

For meat with trimmings? I'd probably pay up to £5.

bostonchamps · 02/01/2023 18:34

Two types of people in the world:

those who post sarcastic comments on sandwich threads about people making their own sandwiches

those who think life is too short to eat crappy homemade sandwiches they've been carrying around since they left the house at 7am

walnutmarzipan · 02/01/2023 18:35

It's £4.95 for a bog standard cheese and ham toastie in our drab hospital cafe.

Pret sandwiches are waaaay nicer than supermarket sandwiches. They are freshly made on the premises each day with good quality ingredients. I'd happily pay that.

Along the similar lines though, why are jacket potatoes so expensive? Was in Dobbies today and they are close to £7 for basic fillings!

There's a range in terms of excitement levels. There's basic fillings like tuna mayo, cheese and ham, plus smoked salmon, chicken & avocado, prawns etc.

The mac and cheese with prosciutto is nice but more expensive.

mrsmarmalade12 · 02/01/2023 18:37

I think eating is just expensive at the moment. I paid £15 for a jacket potato with cheese and chilli at the garden centre the other day. I wonder what it'll do for the obesity crisis.

Not that cheap any more, I worked there when a sausage roll was 33p it’s gone up a fair bit in the last 15 years

Tesco sandwiches are dire

Pret is no better than a supermarket one.

They're massively better. For a start they're made that day, they haven't been sitting around for several days like the factory made supermarket ones. And the quality and amount of filling is much better.

MySoCalledStrife · 02/01/2023 18:40

red4321 · 02/01/2023 18:08

I've noticed that Pret is far more expensive. Might be my memory playing tricks but I'm sure Pret was a cheaper (but fresh) option when it first started, e.g. tea was 99 pence, sandwiches were around £3.

I confess to being a big Pret fan but even the biscuits are around £3 now.

I remember it being like this too. It was much , much cheaper. They would also give you a cup of miso soup for free.

I haven't commuted to London since the pandemic and so haven't been to Pret in a really long time. I'm sure when I worked in London Pret met about 90% of my daily diet. Went to one the other day and couldn't believe that a croissant was £2.50!

Untrue. Pret is superior to any supermarket sandwich.

😱 Puts the £7 Dobbies potato to shame!

Totally agree. The only one that comes anywhere close is the m&s "best ever" range.

Pret is overpriced shite. Go to Greggs

Definitely. Greggs tuna sandwiches are lovely

Ah that takes me back. Not the best quality but boy were they cheap. When did they disappear?
