DD7 was diagnosed with strep A at the hospital on Boxing Day and prescribed antibiotics. A few days later DD5 became unwell (fever, sunken eyes, weakness etc). My first thought was strep A and the Dr prescribed amoxicillin to be on the safe side. She didn’t have a rash (older DD did) but had other symptoms. I did mention to the doctor she also has an awful chesty cough and is sneezing a lot which aren’t symptoms of strep but nevertheless we were prescribed with antibiotics.

On day 4 of antibiotics now and I’m concerned about the trajectory of her recovery. She doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Still very weak/fever on and off etc. The cough is awful and I’m worried she has flu/bronchitis in which case antibiotics will do nothing and I’ve read the if it is flu can actually make symptoms worse and cause serious complications :(

Drs are shut today and I’m considering calling 111, just don’t fancy sitting in a&e for 6 hours when DD is so poorly unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I’m happy to continue with the antibiotics but can anyone advise if this could be dangerous if it’s not strep? That’s my only concern. Any advice from someone with knowledge would be much appreciated!

Ds2 had flu when he was 4 and was "in bed" ill for 10 days straight. Some viruses are nasty.
If she's still responsive and drinking I'd not be too worried yet but yes message your gp if no improvement by tomorrow.

You need to try and get some sugar (and salt, if poss) into her OP. Can you give her watered down juice, or - shock horror - a sugary soft drink?

Thank you. Yes I agree unfortunately she won’t have anything like that! She’s never had a soft drink and doesn’t like squash/fresh juices. Just water and milk. Will add a tiny amount of pink salt to her water, thanks for the tip.

She has perked up as the morning has progressed. Slightly more talkative, eyes less sunken and laughed at a fart joke I made 😬feeling slightly less panicked now and think I’ll wait until tomorrow and message the Dr as a precaution, if they feel the need to see her I will take her in. She also had a tiny bowl of porridge and honey. Illnesses have been awful this winter, don’t know what’s going on!

If she won’t drink squash give her an ice lolly, to get sugar in.

Please just call an ambulance. Even if they don't come they may send a doctor who can then determine whether an ambulance is required.

Are you joking? Do you not watch the news?

Seek medical advice by all means but don't add to an ambulance service in crisis. Nowhere has the OP said it was a critical emergency or that she doesn't have her own vehicle, just that she doesn't fancy sitting in A&E for 6 hours with a poorly child.

Calling 999 is selfish and might prevent someone with a life threatening emergency in their hands getting through.
