To want to combat my laziness?

OffredsNose · 01/01/2023 22:14

I’ve become so lazy, literally sat on my arse all day when I’m not at work (very part time). I just can’t be bothered to do anything. I’ve been like this for a few years now. I spend hours scrolling social media and playing computer games. I often don’t leave the house for days. What is wrong with me?!

Im only 41, I shouldn’t be this lethargic surely? I look forward to bedtime every night.

A few years ago I was at the gym 4 times a week, out and about, going on holidays etc, I just can’t be bothered anymore. I can’t even be bothered to go on holiday! Anyone else like this?

Yes. I’m the same age as well. I work pretty much ft and have two kids with special needs so figure I’m burnt out. I just can’t be bothered to do anything. In between not being bothered, I’ll also have spells of crying. Like you, I also very infrequently leave the house.

EmmaEmerald · 01/01/2023 22:19

Yes
I am re-reading Johann Hari "Stolen Focus"

I am 46 and giving my free time to online trivia. Like MN - no offence. But I should limit my time here.

RumNotRun · 01/01/2023 22:39

42 here and the same. I promised myself I'd go for a walk even for 5 minutes every day this month. I failed on the first day. I am so fed up of being this lazy but I can't seem to motivate myself to actually do anything.

OffredsNose · 01/01/2023 22:40

I’m so glad it’s not just me. Does anyone feel like Covid/lockdowns may have something to do with it?

OP posts:
Butchyrestingface · 01/01/2023 22:41

I had a 3 hour walk today and still consider myself a lazy ass (the rest of the day I spent lolling around in bed). Grin

Yes
don't want to derail so won't explain why, but yes.

i have vacuumed today and cleaned the bathroom, thinking about it, that's an improvement on yesterday.

princesssparklepants · 01/01/2023 22:54

I'm 37 and I'm the same.
I used to be a big reader but barely read anymore.

But today I deleted my social
Media apps ( mn isn't social media is it? Confused)
And I order some books to get me starting reading again.

I can never remember my mum just sitting around doing nothing but that's all I've done since I finished up for Xmas 10days ago!

No more doom scrolling for me....
At least until I cave and re download Instagram!

Xxx92 · 01/01/2023 22:55

Get onto Team RH it’s a diet plan but they literally force you to get your steps in.
also, book things out of your comfort zone and force yourself it’s no good staying in xxx

Oblomov22 · 01/01/2023 22:59

I love doing as little as possible. I get all the basics done: hoover, put on a load of washing. Then slob about. Why not?

In my case

  1. I'm falling behind in basics

  2. it's making my mental health worse.

there are times I love doing nothing but now I'm really struggling with apathy.

Meadowland · 01/01/2023 23:03

I was like this, drifted into mindless scrolling on phone. Realised what a terrible impact it had on my mental health.

I now have set times when all screens are turned off. Much easier to get up and do something constructive then.
Can't tell you how much better I feel.

DrJump · 01/01/2023 23:09

I've decided that this year I am not saying No things I like/love. It's sounds hedonistic but I feel like the last few years I say no to stuff I like doing because it is too hard. So I am forcing myself to do the things I actually like rather than feeling like the basics are enough.

Sugarsandwiches · 01/01/2023 23:15

@Xxx92 just googled Team RH as new to me but the bad reviews of it are really, really bad - I know every service is not for everyone but these reviews all have similar complaints.

presume you had a good experience? Do you have to use MyFitnessPal in addition to their app as that seems a pain in the arse

NosyNeighbour22 · 01/01/2023 23:31

I’m the same, I used to run ultramarathons and do CrossFit. Now I just sit on my chubby arse scrolling through my phone. I’m never entirely sure if the incessant scrolling is the cause of my laziness or a symptom of my depression. I’ve been in antidepressant for a few months but not seen any improvement in my motivation.

I used team RH when they were quite new and really liked the whole thing and recommended them to a lot of people but I rejoined it recently without realising that they had changed the set up and you now couldn’t cancel the subscription. I got an email threatening me with a massive extra charge and a debt collector because I’d missed a payment and asked to cancel as my dd was in hospital and I hadn’t been able to work for months. They did eventually let me cancel the subscription but they were extremely unpleasant about it so they wouldn’t ever get a recommendation from me again!

OffredsNose · 01/01/2023 23:41

Wouldn’t touch TeamRH with a barge pole. I used to be a member, back in the day when Richie was funny and approachable, he used to post really informative stuff, motivation and advice but they changed. All he posts now is sarcastic rants, I find him deeply unpleasant. I do wonder if something is going on with him because he’s really not the same bloke he was a few years back.

It's not necessarily bad unless it makes you unhappy or you're not doing the things you should.

DH spends most of his spare time watching YouTube (not quite random shit, usually factual stuff) but he also plays with dc, cooks dinner, does his share of house stuff and kid taxis so it's his spare time to spend as he wishes.

I have a hobby which forces me out of the house every single day plus a dog to walk. I also like going to cinema and theatre but otherwise have stopped doing other things which I feel are worthy and I do feel like I waste a lot of my free time.

You (we) need some goals. I'm not sure what though, it needs some thought.

I used to note down all the things I'd done at the end of the day, even if it was just
Called mum
Food shop
2 loads washing
Washed hair
They were all things that needed to be done and I'd completed them and should give myself some credit.

I also selected 3 areas of my life I wanted to improve and had a 'no more zero days' mantra. So if I chose 1.exercise 2.tidying 3.reading I would need to do all of those even if it was 1 push up, 1 drawer, 1 page. Once you start something it's easier to keep going.

So I think I'll start with those 2 strategies while I think about my bigger goals. Good luck

Sugarsandwiches · 01/01/2023 23:46

yikes thank you for info on RH sounds nasty.

I’m 37 and sit on my arse every night after work and honestly I’m sick of it and I feel slightly ashamed. I think a lot of it, in my case, is my phone, and it’s that way as a coping mechanism for a manic job. As I view it as a wind down reward.

I need to make a change which might involve me leaving my phone upstairs or in the bloody car. I used to do yoga and the gym, socialise at least once a week post work.
Also some of it is time of year. I’m much more social in spring/summer and I walk more then too.

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 01/01/2023 23:48

30 and 4 kids and the same

I absolutely love this idea. A little bit of something everyday.

I choose

  1. Exercise
  2. self care
  3. decluttering
RobertaFirmino · 02/01/2023 00:23

This might sound daft but are you getting enough vitamins and minerals? Particularly Vitamin D at this time of year. Perhaps you might need a supplement. Remember that Boots own is generally as good as branded stuff but cheaper.

Xxx92 · 02/01/2023 14:43

I think I just like his brutal approach because it kicks my arse into gear and I’ve learnt so much about nutrition from them. My subscription has ended now but I don’t feel I need to rejoin as I’ve learnt so much.
you can work out the cals/ macros yourself online and just make sure you do 10-15k steps per day and weights three times a week xx

America12 · 02/01/2023 15:02

I'm exactly the same , it's shameful.

Ylvamoon · 02/01/2023 15:08

I was like this a few years ago- after a very unfortunate accident.

I booked an adventure holiday 18 months in advance. I knew I had to be fit order to enjoy the holiday - think something like mount everest base camp.
It worked for me, but unfortunately for my purse I am now training for my next big adventure....

EmmaEmerald · 02/01/2023 15:13

I managed to get up and do 15 mins exercise at the start of the day. Still got a load of housework to tackle before tomorrow.

SmokeyPaprika · 02/01/2023 15:30

In Johann Hari’s book he points out that SM is designed to be addictive, all those ticks and likes. So you are giving up your right to an interesting and fulfilling life for the benefit of, and filling the bank balance of, the owners and investors of billionaire American IT companies.
keep that in mind as a deterrent.
