DH wants a leather sofa because of the dog. I think they look old fashioned? Can they ever look modern?

YABU - nothing wrong with a leather suite
YANBU - they look minging

I have one. I think it’s modern looking.

They are very practical - wipe clean and robust.

WillTryNotToBeGrumpy · 01/01/2023 18:31

YANBU.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/01/2023 18:33

They are practical for wiping clean, and I think they look nice BUT I find them seriously uncomfortable....too sticky in summer if you have bare legs, and slippery and cold in the winter. If you put a throw on to try to cosy it up it will slide off, and it is the complete opposite of cosy!
I did have a cream leather sofa when my DC were young and actually it was very easy to keep clean but I much refer the cotton covered sofa I have now. Velvet would be even better!

Warspite · 01/01/2023 18:35

Cold to your legs/body in winter.
Too hot and sticky in summer.
Get dog a proper bed. Train him to use it.

Leather’s not for me. Always looks “uninviting” to me somehow.
Each to his own.

I tried a really fancy designer leather sofa in an expensive furniture shop a few years ago thinking it was going to be uncomfortable but it was the complete opposite, so sadly that £9999 sofa is now my dream sofa. We’ve seen a lookalike in a shop nearby that we’re going to have a look at (pic enclosed) - anyway my point is that it looks modern I think.

They’re so cold and slippy! Awful to sit on.

thunderstruckk · 01/01/2023 18:43

Personally I think they're really old fashioned too! Also, why would leather be more dog friendly? Surely a fabric one that you can clean easily would be better, less dated (imo) and dog friendly. I've only seen leather sofas in peoples homes with cracks / wear patches / animal scratches on so I might be biased! Friends with dogs who have fabric sofas have ones that look better than those with dogs and leather sofas.

cleowasmycat · 01/01/2023 18:48

I just got rid of my leather sofa. Too hard, not enough depth and ugly. I hated it. Just bought a fabric sofa from DFS and it's lush. I also have a fur bag pug.

EddietheEagle · 01/01/2023 18:48

I don't think they are modern anymore. Fabric sofas as in now. Leather ones are practical though I guess

RandomMess · 01/01/2023 18:49

Yes you can get ones with a mid century look that are modern, just wish I could afford one!!

catinboots123 · 01/01/2023 18:50

Has anyone got any links to modern looking leather sofas?

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/01/2023 18:51

I have a leather sofa and have dogs, got throws on them. Just bought a new corner sofa with fabric, as the leather 1 is very old.

I been to DFS, look on their website.

Wotwotwotwotwot · 01/01/2023 18:53

I love ours, it's so practical, just give it a hoover and wipe it down and it's good as new. I guess it looks quite old fashioned but we live in a 200 year old house so it fits in perfectly. I dont find it at all uncomfortable

Sliversands · 01/01/2023 18:55

I have a leather sofa which is 20 years old!!! Was Italian leather and expensive at the time but is so comfy and is easy to clean. It's probably a bit worn now but I'm keeping it until I next move house. Friends have gone through 2 or 3 suites into he time I've had this and despite its age still is "modern"looking.

thaisweetchill · 01/01/2023 18:55

Can't stand them sorry, I think they're so uncomfortable. This is probably because I grew up with leather sofas so I loathe them.

I find a material sofa much more warm and comfortable.

Canuckduck · 01/01/2023 18:56

I have two. We got them for practical reasons, dogs, kids etc.

Ours are kind of classic mid century look and a non shiny leather finish that is meant to wear a bit. They are super comfortable, warm etc and you don’t stick to them. They are easy to keep clean and can be repaired if necessary. 5 years old and still look great.

As an alternative you could get a modular style sofa with removable / replaceable covers.

I have this. It’s comfy, and very easy to keep clean

ThinWomansBrain · 01/01/2023 19:01

depends on the shape/style - and quality of the leather.
I had a fabulous Ikea one for years - I got rid of it to get a sofa bed, and really regret it.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 01/01/2023 19:22

I've only ever had one material sofa, I really dislike them and they don't seem to last very long tbh and aren't practical with kids and pets. People I know with material seem to be switching them every 5 years whereas I've has sofas that have lasted over 20 years. What do you mean by modern? I think it depends oj the style rather than the material.

glamourousindierockandroll · 01/01/2023 19:32

I have one in chocolate brown. Bought it over ten tears ago when I was renting thinking it would always look neutral and wouldn't go saggy like fabric tends to over time.

I wasn't mad on it back then and I really don't like it now BUT indeed it has not sagged and is extremely practical with young children. I'd like to change it when my youngest starts school.

HomeAGnome · 01/01/2023 19:44

I've had mine for at least 17 years.i clean it with saddle soap twice a year and it looks better everytime & really comfortable
It cost a bloody fortune though. , I wouldn't make that sort of investment for my dog to sleep on it much as I love them
