... "gifted" instead of "given" [to you] or "gave" [to someone else].

Thank you.

OP posts:
Cuppasoupmonster · 31/12/2022 16:08

YANBU they think it makes them sound less scroungy but it doesn’t

Beachsidesunset · 31/12/2022 16:10

Bill Bailey talks about the 'gifting season' in one of his shows. 'Commence gifting! Gifting gifting gifting.'

Starlightstarbright1 · 31/12/2022 16:11

No .. i might say it more.

wp65 · 31/12/2022 16:13

YANBU

DrManhattan · 31/12/2022 16:13

Unreasonable request

oioimatey · 31/12/2022 16:13

YANBU. Unless it's in regards to money being gifted from one party to another for a deposit on a house, in which case it is gifted.

CleoandRalf · 31/12/2022 16:13

Why not?

depending on context it’s perfectly appropriate.

Being given something isn’t the same as being gifted something.

OnlyFannys · 31/12/2022 16:13

Can posters please stop telling other posters what to say. You dont own the internet

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/12/2022 16:14

🙄

Facecream · 31/12/2022 16:15

You could of said you didn’t want to be gifted (see what I did there), should of, could of

TimeToFlyNow · 31/12/2022 16:16

I've never said it but can't see the big deal

LimeTwists · 31/12/2022 16:17

I’d also like it if they stopped saying, ‘Can someone recommend me a…’.

donttellmehesalive · 31/12/2022 16:19

Feels wrong to tell people to stop using a word being used correctly.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 31/12/2022 16:19

There’s a far worse crime on here. Using “text” as a past participle.

It’s texted

christ.

HomeAGnome · 31/12/2022 16:21

Agree @EasterIsland also 'Can I get?' and playdates , when did that creep in ?

BeyondMyWits · 31/12/2022 16:22

From Websters

"Gift as a verb has a 400-year history of use and means “to present someone with a gift.” Some feel strongly that give is the correct word, but gift-as-a-verb is an acceptable and efficient alternative."

So I'll use it if I want to (I don't generally...)

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/12/2022 16:22

Can people please put posts in the correct places Xmas Smile

brusselspout · 31/12/2022 16:23

But to give and to gift are different, so would each be used in their respective appropriate contexts. YABU.

Now, for the poster up thread who said 'could of' I may need to have a word....

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2022 16:23

Nee-naw. 🚨

YABU. It’s not a problem really is it. There’s a thread somewhere where you post expressions you dislike though.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 31/12/2022 16:27

Gift is German for poison. As a German speaker, all the gifting of gift amuses me.

SkylightSkylight · 31/12/2022 16:28

You can ask, as many others have. But I suspect all your thread will do is UP the number of times it's used.

I have never used 'gifted'.

However, I do dislike bossy widgets so shall I tell you about what I was gifted at Christmas and what I gifted everyone else?

2bazookas · 31/12/2022 16:32

Yes, please.

I can't bare it; they really need to reign it in.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 31/12/2022 16:33

I never started saying it. I agree OP, it's total shite. Sounds so pretentious.

PurpleButterflyWings · 31/12/2022 16:34

Facecream · 31/12/2022 16:15

You could of said you didn’t want to be gifted (see what I did there), should of, could of

Pennyforthezombies · 31/12/2022 16:35

Whilst I agree it’s annoying, you don’t have the right to tell people what they can say. YABU
