... "gifted" instead of "given" [to you] or "gave" [to someone else].

Thank you.

@EasterIsland

I am saying YABU, because you have no right to police what people say.

@SkylightSkylight

You can ask, as many others have. But I suspect all your thread will do is UP the number of times it's used.

Exactly that. ^ I will say it more than ever now, because I don't like being told what to do by randoms on the internet.

Want2beme · 31/12/2022 16:39

Isn't gifted used re a special talent?

DuplicateUserName · 31/12/2022 16:43

You're really not suited to the internet OP, if you think you can use it as a tool to control people.

Sparklesocks · 31/12/2022 16:46

Meh. Language evolves and changes all the time. It’s still clear what they mean so does it really matter?

BadgerB · 31/12/2022 16:46

Being given something isn’t the same as being gifted something.

Yes it is, surely?

ThinWomansBrain · 31/12/2022 16:47

From all of the posts with shit grammar, poor spelling & incomprehensible ramblings, this is what concerns you the most?🙄

Isn't gifted used re a special talent?

Yes, it is. The only way I would use the word

growinggreyer · 31/12/2022 16:48

You could pronounce it give-ted, this makes it the past tense of both verbs at the same time and is therefore twice as betterer.

KettrickenSmiled · 31/12/2022 16:49

2bazookas · 31/12/2022 16:32

Yes, please.

I can't bare it; they really need to reign it in.

I see you have the bit between your teeth now, but don't saddle the thread with more of your unbridled malapropisms Bazookas.
You'll have OP looking a Given Horse in the mouth next.

Isn't gifted used re a special talent?

Yes.

It also means to receive a gift/be given something.

Here's a SHOCKER for you .... Some words in the English language have more than one meaning! Shock

KimberleyClark · 31/12/2022 16:51

To me gifting something means giving it away, rather than specifically giving it as a present.

SoupDragon · 31/12/2022 16:54

I reckon they will about the same time that people stop posting threads in AIBU which should be in Chat.

Why not?

depending on context it’s perfectly appropriate.

Being given something isn’t the same as being gifted something.

Until very recently we managed just fine with given - we don't need "gifted" now. Unless you are gifting land. Otherwise, it's cringey and jumping on a bandwagon. Like saying excited "for" something instead of "about". People do like to mangle the English language.

Whilst I agree it’s annoying, you don’t have the right to tell people what they can say. YABU

It offends my eardrums Grin

Academi · 31/12/2022 17:00

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 31/12/2022 16:19

There’s a far worse crime on here. Using “text” as a past participle.

It’s texted

christ.

Oh yes. I agree!

DuplicateUserName · 31/12/2022 17:01

I hate 'gotten'. It seems like every fucker uses it now but it still makes me cringe.

It's totally my problem though. I couldn't imagine starting a silly thread like this over it.

Alfredafleur · 31/12/2022 17:02

Yanbu

Tiredalwaystired · 31/12/2022 17:06

Could all posters please stop…

assigning themselves as the language police.

You have not been assigned this job.

unless someone has gifted it to you.

Thank you.

floradora · 31/12/2022 17:06

May I add "birthed" to the debate? Personally I only gave birth (or maybe actually I "gifted birth" 😂

Did you mean "designated"? 😉

BadNomad · 31/12/2022 17:07

I'd rather posters stop saying "Maybe he is autistic".

LearnerCook · 31/12/2022 17:12

YANBU. At all.

TimBoothseyes · 31/12/2022 17:12

Well given that gifted is widely used in countries outside of the UK (where some poster actually live), YABU.

MichonnesBBF · 31/12/2022 17:12

Dont tell me what to do..."YOU AINT MY MUVVVVA!"

mellicauli · 31/12/2022 17:12

The reason this verb is used now is because it is useful. We need a succinct way to differentiate between giving someone a book and giving someone a book as a present. If it's not one we like, we'd like to reserve the option to regift it as well.
